Australia Day in Maleny is Back in 2023!

‘Nothing succeeds like success’ – and the enthusiastic volunteers at the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club are once again excitedly working behind the scenes to bring back the previous popular Maleny Aussie Expo event – but in 2023 repackaged as the ’Mobile Come and Try Day Maleny’.

Last held in 2020, right before the onset of Covid hit Australia’s borders and events like these were halted, the 2023 return will look a little different. This year's version will follow a roving “Come and Try” style of events hosted by individual groups and clubs across Maleny on Australia Day, held from 8.00 am till 12 noon.

People will be invited to visit a variety of local community and sporting groups either at their premises, or grouped in various public locations. A

great opportunity for families to see what’s on offer throughout the year for their leisure time!

Chairman of the Maleny Australia Day Event Committee, Rick Vickers, a staunch supporter and volunteer of the event, shared that while it will be going ahead in a different capacity to previous years, it is a great opportunity for people to jump in the car or on their bike and come talk to local groups and experience what the community has to offer.

“There is so much variety in Maleny and many community and sporting groups can’t wait to get involved and do something” said Rick. “Groups are really looking forward to this and are excited to have the event return. You can’t extinguish that community feel.”

Rick explained the first event, which came about as an extension of the RSL’s citizenship ceremony as a

Where’s

Sam, Maleny’s Travelling Jackeroo?

Well, in the last year and a half since he left home on Slim, his trusty Chamberlain Tractor, he has travelled a bit more than 11,000 kilometres, raising funds for his three charities as he goes –and is currently somewhere east of Perth.

Sam said "$150,000 raised so far now – I’ve just gotta get to $250,000. Let’s go 2023!”.

Some of you may have been lucky to spot him in Maleny and have chat over the Christmas break; Sam returned to catch up with his family and do a few chores around their farm.

Maleny low marker cards rare double to end 2022

Maleny golfer Garth

Bailo scored a rare albatross in competition last November at Maleny Golf Club in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Hinterland and then aced the par 3, 17th a few weeks later to cap a memorable 2022 golfing year!

A scratch marker, Garth, 39, is a former club champion at both Maleny and nearby Beerwah golf clubs and once helped legendary Aussie larrikin test cricketer Doug Walters try to improve his golf drive off the front foot during a local visit in 2010. Doug Walters was special guest and guest speaker at the Maleny District Sport & Recreation Clubs 2010 Presentation Night.

After teeing off on Saturday November 12, from the Stone markers on the 456m dogleg left par 5 second, Garth’s prodigious 320m drive left him with just an 8 iron approach shot in from about 135m which hunted down the pin with laser-like precision to find the cup.

Then, during the last Monthly Medal competition round of the year on December 31, Garth jarred his tee shot with that same 8 iron from the back markers on the tricky 147m par 3, 17th.

The albatross was a first for Garth and while he had two previous Aces up his sleeve – the first at the age of 10 with his father Rob’s old cut down 4 wood - neither was during a competition.

The odds of scoring an albatross are estimated to be as great as 6 million to 1 so it’s a rare feat indeed – one achieved by just a few hundred golfers around the world each year, compared to 128,000odd aces.

According to former senior USGA director and Golf Digest contributing editor Dean Knuth, an albatross

With a taste of summer in Queensland, RSPCA Queensland is urging pet owners to keep their pets cool with ample shade and water.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

New year’s day 2023 with just two people on the lawn saw Lynette Evans and Ken Barker fighting it out to see who would start the year on a winning note. Lynette did. S. he beat Ken 17 – 5 in an interesting match tactically.

On Thursday 5th Dianne Horsham showed the benefit of practice to defeat Sarah Widin 15 – 11 while Wallace Roy and Donna Manning teamed up to trounce Kath Smith and Lynette 13 – 8 in a game of doubles.

Dianne’s good form continued into the weekend when she played a game against a team of Donna and Ken. She totally dominated. There was one good break and, for the most part, clever ball movement to keep the more senior players out of the game. As well as that she had useful experience in the endgame. Diane won 26 – 14 and is a player to be watched.

Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am.

The recently de-thatched lawn 2 was a source of great enjoyment for Carole Atkinson from Caloundra, Stuart Craig, Lynette, and Wallace. Running commentaries and cries of despair when shots went astray punctuated the serious demeanour of the contest on Lawn 1. With all that emotional carry on it is hardly surprising that it was a low scoring game which Wallace and Carole managed to edge ahead in. The final result was 6 – 4 to Wallace and Carole. The attached photo shows Carole approaching hoop 1 while her teammate and opponents watch.
