Maleny Streetscape & - Placemaking

The main street of Maleny is set for a makeover in 2024.

The Maleny Streetscape and Placemaking plan is about to be undertaken starting in July 2024 and expected to take about 2 years to complete.

This is the finalisation of the Maleny Streetscape Concept Plan of 2005 was undertaken from 2001 to 2005.

Part of the streetscape construction works were undertaken in 2010 and outcomes were:

• The new roundabout entrance

• The Teak Street intersection including pavement from Tesch Park

• A safer pedestrian crossing

• The area with seating in front of the Community Hall

• The area in front of Cooke Park

These works represent the first stage of streetscape works completed in 2010.

Placemaking involves the community in the design and management of public spaces to help create a “sense of place”, or unique identity for a town.

It’s about improving public spaces to strengthen Maleny as a destination and encourage the community and local businesses to invest in events, local shops and enjoy improved natural assets.

Maleny Community Forum to gain views for upcoming streetscape upgrade

A community forum and information session will be held 20 July 2023 between 5p.m. and 8p.m. at the Maleny Community Centre s to unpack the design for the remaining upgrade to Maple Street. The Sunshine Coast Council wishes that residents share their valuable feedback with the council project team.

Placemaking involves the community in the design and management of public spaces to help create a “sense of place”, or unique identity for a town.

Maleny Rotary Charity Golf Day!

The Rotary Club of Maleny is organising a charity golf day on Friday 8th September 2023 at the beautiful Maleny Golf Course.

The format is an 18-hole 4 ball Ambrose starting at 9:00am. The cost to play is $100 per player which includes breakfast, lunch, and a team buggy..

Golfers of all standards, either as individuals or in teams of 4 are most welcome. The Ambrose format allows golfers to be part of a team and is great fun to play.

There are some great prizes to be given to the winning team, the runner-up team and the ‘wooden spoon’ team. Also prizes for nearest the pin will be given on each of the six par 3 holes. Then there is an s excellent raffle prizes

Funds raised will be donated to the charity Orange Sky Australia, supporting the homeless, and Shelterbox, providing emergency disaster shelter globally.

Council authorises a short film of the Maleny Show

The 2023 Maleny Show not only was very successful, but also marked 100 years since the establishment of the Maleny Show. The Maleny Show was first held on April 24, 1923.

As a result the Sunshine Coast Council promoted this milestone by having a short documentary film made about the event.

It was launched at the Landsborough Museum on July 12th.

Winston Johnston the Maleny Show Society President, said the film marked a significant milestone in the hinterland town.

The film preserves an essential part of our Sunshine Coast heritage through the stories of these volunteers and captures the smells, sounds and sights of show time. It drew intriguing parallels between the show’s humble beginnings and today's modern pavilions and pursuits.

The film is an initiative of the Sunshine Coast Council Arts and Heritage Levy program.

Witta Tennis News

Nambour Nailers played their best team to contest an always close encounter with Witta Wompoos on Sunday in the Sunshine Coast vets competition. Intermittent wind conditions proved challenging with the home team winning the first 2 sets followed by Witta evening the score after some impressive men’s doubles combinations. After the lady’s doubles Nambour were up by one set, leaving Witta determined to commit to the chase.

Haydyn Craven had the best average for the team winning three of his four sets with Sean, Tony and Mal close behind.

The Nambour combination of Martelle and Karien proved too strong for Paula and Colleen who filled in for Witta in style. A big thank you to Colleen for completing our team and enjoying some great tennis.

Witta went down 7 sets to 5 sets at the end of an entertaining day.

Witta Wompoos play Murgon at Gympie on July 23rd in our next match.

Community Meeting for Maple Street streetscape

On the 20th July, 2023 between 5p.m. and 8p.m. a community meeting will be held in the Maleny Community Centre to discuss the concept plan by the Sunshine Coast Council in respect to the upgrade of Maple Street, Maleny placemaking project.

The Sunshine Coast Council has set aside $1.5 million towards the project. Construction work is expected to commence in July 2024. This date has been delayed from July 2023. The project is expected to take about 2 years to complete.

Prior community consultation found that the main areas of concern were seating and places to meet, footpath accessibility, shading, Maleny Lane entry and parking.

Overheard at Maple 3 the other day between a well-known couple of socially active women around town having a coffee.

Maleny 1915. - “just how things have changed11!

The first European to document Maleny was the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who describes the area in his travel diary in 1844. The first European settlement followed in the wake of the Gympie gold rush of 1867. A track linking Maleny to Landsborough was cut in 1880.

Maleny’s first store was built by the Maleny Co-operative Dairy Association and started trading in November 1905, operated by Mr A.M. Hunt. The store was divided into 3 shops with the third store occupied by Maleny's first E.S. & A. Bank

In 1912, the former Landsborough Shire Council was formed by the subdivision of the Caboolture Shire. The new local government authority included the towns of Landsborough, Maleny, Beerburrum and Caloundra. The new Council met in ‘Dyer's hall’ (located at this time behind the Mellum Club Hotel, later moved to a site adjacent to the hotel in Cribb Street) until the following year when a shire of Maleny was a timber town until the early 1920s and then went on to become the centre of dairy production and fruit growing. The name Maleny is probably derived from the parish name, which in turn is possibly derived from the Scottish place name Malleny, a historic house and garden in the Midlothian village of the same name.

Maleny Baptist Church opened in July 1914 and the Maleny Township State School opened on 22 April 1913. Then In 1915 its name was changed to Maleny State School.

“Comedy for a Cause”

The Maleny State School P & C will be presenting an Adults-only (18+) show in the Maleny State School Hall on Friday August 11th, 2023 from 6p.m. The show is to raise much needed funds to assist the Maleny State School. The show is organised through Comedy For A Cause which was established in January 2013 in the hope of assisting Not For Profit organisations fundraise in an efficient and entertaining manner.

“Comedy for a Cause” has hosted hundreds of shows for a huge variety of ‘Causes’ and helped raise over $1,000,000 and now it is Maleny’s opportunity to see this high class comedy show. The comedians in this instance are led by Lindsay Webb who is one of the most in-demand comedians in this country. He has been performing stand-up comedy all over the world since 1998

The night includes Dave Eastgate who is an actor, stand-up comedian, writer and musician who lives in Sydney, Australia. He starred in the ABC/BBC/ Comedy Central US smash hit, Ronnie Chieng And Anisa Nandaula who is an emerging Brisbane based poet and performance artist. Within her first 6 months of stand up she became the Sunshine Coast laughable comedy champion 2020, won the giggle room comedy competition and won the audience favourite at the good chat Bratt pack Then there is Andy Thompson whois a seasoned stand-up veteran having cut his teeth on the flourishing Brisbane comedy established himself as a consistent and and confident performer and a lively storyteller.

Camping

Maleny Showgrounds is open for camping. This ground offers camping year-round (maximum 3 night stay), except during major events & seasonal blackout dates.

All campers who can adhere to the Qld Health, Sunshine Coast Council and Qld Government regulations pertaining to Covid-19 social distancing and hygiene guidelines are welcome. Enjoy a peaceful environment close to town. Groups and caravanning clubs are welcome. Cost is just $25 per night.

BLACKALL RANGE

The Lions Club of Maleny - Blackall Range has a proud record of service to the local community and have just celebrated 40 years of service.

The club was chartered on April 15th, 1983 and local, Roger Jackson, now deceased was the first President.

As a memorial to Roger the club offers a $1,000 selfimprovement bursary and a $200 youth Public Speaking bursary $200.

Over the years our club has fostered the formation of the Blackall Range Lions Club, the Mooloolah Valley Lions Club and the Beerwah Lions Club.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

Last weekend Donna Manning played in the Women’s Open of the Gold Coast Tweed tournament in Murwillimbah. She scored three wins from six in the double round robin as did the other three ladies. Donna came second on net hoops behind Heather Knight from Stephens Club, a great result considering the three other players are regular members of the Queensland state team. Donna is a reserve. She commented on how good the Murwillimbah lawns were and thanked the organisers.

Thursday was the first use of the lawn after a wet Tuesday, but ricochet croquet had a bumper day with a pennants competition against Bribie.

Sarah Widin lost to Dolly Taylor 15 – 20, Dianne Horsman beat Don Baily 19 – 12, but Maleny lost the rubber 1 – 2 when Vince Carbery went down to Allison Beer and Jan McNee 13 – 17.

Congratulations Bribie on a well-fought win. Association social play in the afternoon resulted in a 12 – 6 win to Wallace Roy and Kath Smith against Lynette Evans and Sally Adams.

Ken Barker and Chris Borlase played in the Windsor Brooch at Windsor Club on Friday winning a game apiece in a tight competition.

On Sunday Stuart Craig and Wallace 9 beat Vince and Lynette 6. Chris pegged out against Dianne 26 –11 while Carole Atkinson and Donna narrowly lost to Nick Cram and Sarah 5 – 6.

Association Croquet

Association Croquet is a tactical game, usually between two players, consisting of running six hoops in order with two balls, clockwise first and then anti-clockwise, and finally hitting the central peg. It is played in a lawn measuring 35yards by 28 yards. The running of a hoop and hitting of the peg scores one point. The maximum score is, therefore, 26 points. Six hoops twice by two balls plus the pegging out.
