Platypus Whispers Guided Tours

Did you know that you can experience a Guided Walk of the unique Maleny Platypus habitat in Maleny? Maleny local Neil Andison invites you to share his wealth of knowledge about the platypus, bird-life, habitat and so much more.

Starting at the Maleny Showgrounds, you can join Neil for fascinating guided walks along the Obi Creek – and all you need are your curiosity and your camera!

Platypus Whispers Guided Walks will take approximately 3 hours, with starting times of 6 am & 4 pm each Fri, Sat, Sun, and Mon.

Follow the Obi Creek along the Boardwalk, through town and then out to the Beersheba Platypus viewing platform on the Maleny Precinct. Along the way you'll learn where to look, and discover what to look for when searching for the elusive Platypus!

Cost is $65 per person and you can make a booking by calling Neil on 0412 518 95.

Follow Neil and see some of his fantastic photography by visiting his FB page at: https://www.facebook.com/platypuswhisperer1

What others think about the tour

"Thoroughly recommend Neil's platypus tour. His knowledge of local wildlife is amazing. Today we saw 2 platypus, at least 10 different birds and their nests, a turtle, an eel, and last but not least a family of 6 Tawny frogmouths! 3 hours wondering through the Obi Obi Board walk along the river - very special!” Helen

“ 5 STARS for the platypus whisperer. Awesome guide. Such an interesting few hours.” Lenore

Overheard at Maple 3 the other day between a well-known couple around town.

A well known husband and his wife, having a coffee in Maple 3. They were daydreaming about what they would do if they won the lottery. The wife started: “I’d hire a cook so that I could just say, ‘Hey, make me a sandwich!’”

The husband shook his head and said . “Not me. I already have one of those.”

Selectors Green Gets a Makeover

Locals and visitors alike can now enjoy a new park on the Maleny Community Precinct. The park includes a magnificent fig tree under which shaded benches provide a restful spot to take in sweeping views of the Maleny Community Precinct

Adjoining the beautiful 5th Light Horse Troop's training area called “The Ziza Field”, the park is a joint volunteer community group effort on the Maleny Sport & Rec Club's area, designed, maintained and developed by the combined community and service groups.

Check out the adventure landscaping of shaded seating, big logs and boulders they installed under the top fig tree.

Historically themed park "Selectors Green" on the Maleny Community Precinct got a New Year’s gardening facelift on Saturday January 14th. Volunteers from Maleny Sport & Rec Club, Blackall Range Lions, Maleny Rotary and Maleny Gardening Club got together in cool weather to pull lots of weeds, mulch beds, refurbish old beds – and create more new spaces for some shady trees for visitors.

With the history of how the development o the town Maleny came about at the turn of the century on display, a visit to the park is a must for families, picnickers and walkers alike.

All welcome including (strictly) on-leash dogs. See link of the Selectors Green journey from weeds to parkland here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVUb_ah2VQ8

LIONS CLUB – MALENY BLACKALL RANGE

“Fryers Creek Forest Flourishes”

To celebrate 75 years of Lions Clubs in Australia, the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club created the Fryers Creek Regeneration Project. The reserve area at Fryers Creek is on the left hand side of the road as you drive out of town.

New trees were planted and are now growing beautifully. Lion Dave Coffey, has such a "green thumb" and made it his mission to maintain this reserve area by mowing and tending to the trees as needed.

Our club is so proud of this Regeneration Project at Fryers Creek and we can't thank Dave enough for his commitment to the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range and volunteering his time and equipment to maintain this Regeneration Project for the benefit of our community.

Next time you’re going by, take a look, it’s flourishing!

January is the month for Australian tennis – and Tennis Queensland is promoting Open Days at Tennis Clubs on the weekend of the Australian Open Final.

Maleny is of course participating. On Sunday, January 29th, starting at 3pm, Maleny Tennis will be holding a Family Fun Day. All are welcome to attend to make it a great day that inspires new members to join the club and ignite even more tennis interest.

Planned activities include an exhibition match with some high calibre players, the newly purchased practice machine will be in action, and there's a demonstration Pickle Ball match and general tennis play.

Juniors and all newcomers will be welcomed under the guidance of our new coach Jani Kroyherr.

In the evening all of the excitement of he Australian Tennis Open Men’s Final will be streamed live on our court, so bring a chair or bean bag and settle in for the evening - we are trusting that the infamous Maleny weather behaves itself.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

The year is getting well underway, with plans afoot for club activities and with Saturday morning coaching well attended as our players are looking to further their skills in 2023.

On Saturday 14th, we had seven come along to learn from our experienced coaches Vince Carbery and Sarah Widin. All are hoping that the helpful advice brings an improvement in our games; on this occasion practicing clever use of the stop shot to place the croqueted ball ahead when playing a forward game as well as practicing use of the rush to move the roqueted ball to a better position for taking the subsequent croquet shot. We have enjoyed the company of Carole Atkinson from the Caloundra club who has joined us to take advantage of Vince and Sarah’s expertise. In the attached photo,

Wallace Roy single handedly conquered Stuart Craig and Vince Carbery with a score of 9 hoops to 6. It must be the new mallet Wallace got for Christmas fuelling his great success this past week!

We are looking forward to Australia Day when anyone interested will be able to visit us in the morning on our lawns at the show-grounds and learn something of the great game of croquet. We hope to see you there!

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days.

Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15.

Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am.

You can introduce your kids and grandkids to croquet at the web site below: https://kids.kiddle.co/Croquet

Our web address is: https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au

For details contact Sarah Widin 0417640704 (President ) Court Hire.

Our courts may be available for community use or for special events, like workplace teambuilding or social gathering.

Carole prepares to practice rushing the blue ball forward with the red strikers ball in while attempting a roquet, watched on by coach Sarah.

Thursday afternoon 12th January saw several games on the lawns with many of our players turning up to enjoy some great competition. In a singles match, Dianne Horsman continued her excellent form to beat Donna Manning 14:8. Meanwhile in an exciting and high scoring doubles match, Lynette Evans and Wallace Roy scored a whopping 26 hoops to Vince Carbery and Sally Adams’ 19 hoops. Well played everyone. In another singles match, Nick Cram took on Ken Barker, with Ken coming up with the win with 19 hoops to Nick’s 10. Sunday 15th, although overcast, brought very pleasant conditions with seven players fronting up keen to play. Sarah Widin teamed up with Dianne Horsman to defeat Donna Manning and Lynette Evans 11:6. Meanwhile

Our croquet equipment may be available for your guests in some special occasion (e.g. wedding) if suitable grounds are available.

If you are interested, please phone, email or use the contact page above.
