50th anniversary of the proclamation to end Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War

This year Australia marks 50 years since the end of Australia's official involvement in the Vietnam War. August 18 holds special significance for our Vietnam Veteran Community

There were approximately 70 attendees at the Cenotaph Service, held in honour of the Vietnam Veterans Day at the Maleny RSL. Maleny has 13 names on the Vietnam Honour Board at the RSL.

One is a KIA, Dale Morrison, from Conondale, who was killed at Coral-Balmoral. The Guest Speaker this year was Rick Vickers. It was exceptionally moving to hear the National Anthems of Australia and New

Zealand sung by by Nellie Finlay and Sue Halle, with the Last Post and Reveille by Katie Jardine, who attended with her PTSD trainee dog.

Cadets from Maleny’s TS Centaur excelled themselves with their role as the Cataflaque Party.

Overall a very moving ceremony and then luncheon afterwards with 62 people enjoying the luncheon supplied by Maleny RSL catering staff, and financially supported by RSL Sunshine Coast District.

Members from 4 Sub-Branches, Maleny, Mapleton, Beerwah and Kenilworth attended. The attendees were a mixture of Vietnam Veterans and their partners, family, supporting Sub-Branch members and Qantas pilots. Qantas was used to fly personnel who didn’t go by ship to and from Vietnam..

Maleny RSL members did a top job with organising this once in a lifetime event.

More than 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, over 3,000 wounded and 523 gave their lives in the longest conflict Australians were involved in during the 20th Century.

Maleny Senior Citizens

Maleny Senior Citizens meet every Friday morning from about 8.45 until 11am for a Cuppa, Chat, and some board games and a laugh or two. They meet in the Verandah Room under the Maleny Community Centre. Every Friday morning is ‘drop in’ where games, laughter and morning tea is enjoyed by all. Occasionally the group join together to go on bus or train trips to varying local areas. Everything the club does is based on social activities that are fun.

This is one of the most social activities we have and is held on a regular basis and is open to anyone over the age of 50. Those social activities include some bus trips and the regular Friday night meal with friends at various Maleny eateries.

The Friday night “get togethers” are very popular..

So if you would like to have a Cuppa, a Chat, a Laugh or just sit and listen to the chatter this is the place to come. New members are always welcome.

Call Margaret on 0419 179516 or 54942621. We look forward to seeing you soon. You are sure to meet “new friends” and great fun times.

Rotary Club of Maleny

Lift the lid on Mental Health walk.

Lift the Lid on Mental Illness is Australian Rotary Health's National annual fundraising day for mental health research. From 2022, the focus is on improving the mental health of children 0-12 years old.

Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent funders of mental health research within Australia.

Come along on Sunday September 10th and join the Rotary Club of Maleny on the Lift the lid on Mental Health walk.

Wear your craziest hats, your wildest loudest shirts, dress your pets up, and help us support this wonderful and very important cause.

The route will be from Whit and Wimsy, (don't forget to buy yourself an amazing coffee) before we head down the main street, crossing at IGA and then along our beautiful board walk, into the Maleny Showgrounds, we will then continue through the showgrounds and casually saunter back up to the fabulous Whit and Whimsy for a small little ceremony.

Easy!!

We will have some great raffle prizes up for grabs, prizes for best dressed, best dressed pet, and the best part is that you'll be helping support a very worthy cause.

Come and help Lift the lid on Mental Health!!

Living Waters Short Film Event

Living Waters is a Short Film Event exploring interconnectedness and our belonging to the earth and each other being held on September 1st, 6.30pm at Maleny Community Centre.

Along with films from across the world, we are especially pleased to be able to screen the award winning Katale (Mudskipper), by Sunshine Coast filmmaker John Harvey. This film features Bangarra Dance Theatre performers Elma Kris and Waangenga Blanco Katale. Mudskipper is a joyous slice of magic realism that bursts from the screen with vivid cinematography, enchanting dance sequences and an uplifting connection to Country. In it, a Torres Strait Islander woman is toiling away at a Brisbane laundromat when she’s visited by a man embodying the spirit of the mudskipper. Co-written by respected Torres Strait Islander leader Walter Waia and winner of Best Australian Short Film at Flickerfest, Katele. Mudskipper allows the spirit of culture to shine through in a truly celebratory way.

The films are followed by a short panel discussion featuring Katale Film-maker John Harvey, renowned permaculture expert Robyn Clayfield, and Anglican priest, Rev'd Deb Bird. Tickets cost $10 through the Horizon Festival website: www.horizonfestival.com.au

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

Dianne Horsman played a thirteen all draw against a team consisting of Sally Adams and Priscilla Vickers at ricochet croquet on Tuesday. That’s a good score for ricochet and it would be pleasing to see more players on Tuesday mornings. Bill Bray now deceased, of Nambour club and a well-respected player of the game used to say that ricochet improved his association croquet game by two handicap positions, worth thinking about even if you are a bolted-on association player.

Lynette Evans and Dianne were the only players to take to the lawn on Thursday. Everybody else must have been in recovery mode after the Nell Hass tournament on the weekend. Dianne finished ahead of Lynette to the tune of 18 – 16.

Meanwhile at Mary Cairncross café there was a reunion of the Bad Boys Club (BBC) which consisted of Neil Lovett (represented by his widow, Kate) John McCarthy, Nick Cram, and Ken Barker. Why the BBC? This group would meet at the Maleny Hotel for a beer before Thursday’s fixtures. Neil kept this column alive for many years and the BBC was an entertaining feature of Thursday play.

Sunday was busy. Vince Carbery and Stuart Craig were beaten soundly 6 – 12 by Kath Smith returning to the lawn after a period away and Lynette, fresh from her victory in the Nell Hass. Nick beat Dianne 16 – 11. Donna Manning, preparing for the Gibson Medal on the 26th, played Ken in a friendly where no scores were recorded.

The below photo shows Stuart (L) Helen Uhlmann (Centre) and Dianne (R) in a game of ricochet croquet.
