What Are You Doing on Australia Day?

On Thursday, the Australia Day public holiday is a great opportunity to get out and about with family and friends. And there is plenty on offer for parents and grandparents with kids, visitors, or anyone looking for a bit of fun and activity, at the Maleny Mobile Come and Try Day!

Maleny’s community groups have a great morning planned - from 8am until midday. Why not get mobile and drive or walk to the many venues open and see what they have to offer? Meet the people behind the groups, have a go at what they do – you might even find an activity available you never knew existed right here in your own town!

Start off with a great BBQ breakfast from Apex at the Showgrounds (from 7.00 am) welcome New Australia Citizens at the TS Centaur building (9am) and observe the Remembrance Ceremony honouring our First Nations people at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (10 am).

The Maleny 5th Light Horse Regiment will parade with 10 horses along Maple St at 10am. And there is so much more!

To see all activities and locations on what’s happening at Maleny, point your phone’s camera at the QR

code here, then click on the link that pops up to see what’s on at the Showgrounds, the Maleny Community Precinct, the golf course, in the township, and out at the Maleny Historical Society’s Pioneer Village. The Village will have all of their buildings and displays open, morning teas, a Ukulele band. You’ll also find the gleaming vehicles of the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club there, with a free sausage sizzle.

Rotary are putting on a free sausage sizzle at the MDSRC Sports Club on the Community Precinct from 10am. It could be warm but the Swimming Pool will be open, as will the Maleny Girl Guides.

On Australia Day, we celebrate all the things we love about our country—our home, our history and our people.

Let’s look towards this Australia Day as an opportunity to take up the 2023 theme of Reflect, Respect and Celebrate what makes Australia special and what it means to be Australian - right here in Maleny.

Riding to School 1909 Style!

With parents and children glad to see schools open again, this week we look at a snippet of history from the Friends of Pattemore House. The first school opened on the range was the Blackall Range Provisional School in 1886 and it was housed in a shed on the Wootha property of one of Maleny’s early selector’s, Mr Joseph McCarthy.

William Verrant was the first teacher at the school, enrolling twelve pupils. In 1937 classes had grown to 70 pupils, still with just one teacher but assisted by the older students who would mentor the younger children. It became known as the Wootha State School, closing in1949 after operating successfully for 63 years.

The building was later relocated and incorporated into the Palmwoods School. In 1898, Maleny North State School opened, with a very busy Mr Verrant now sharing his time between this new school and the original Blackall Range School.

Maleny North school closed in 1914, reopened in a new building in 1922, and finally closed in 1953 after 65 years. The Friends share the story of the link between Maleny North State School and Dorothy Pattemore, the daughter of one of the Pattemore brothers, Bill, who built “Fairview” in 1907 for their parents, JR and Emily Pattemore.

By 1909, Mr GP Slattery was the teacher at Maleny North State School, and he rode his horse (with dogs in tow!) across Reynold’s Crossing on the Obi to get to work. This crossing (now nearby a popular part of the Heritage Trail on the Maleny Precinct) emerged close to Gardners Lane, where brothers and farmers Bill and Albert Pattemore and their families were now sharing and living in the same small house.

Photo Above: Mr Slattery, school teacher, in 1909 riding across the Obi’s Reynold’s Crossing on his way to school.

The Friends have a family account of the youthful and smartly dressed teacher, dropping by and picking Dorothy up on his way past, both of them sharing a ride to school on his horse, one of the main modes of transport for many school

kids then. The photo here of Old Dick carrying his cargo looks like he could have been the earliest school bus in the district.

As another interesting link, in 1907 Mr Joe Pollock built the Hotel Maleny on land purchased from

Francis Dunlop, on the eastern banks of the Obi. When the North Maleny School closed in 1914, it was moved to the rear of the new hotel for use as a kitchen - talk about recycling. Francis Dunlop also established the first butcher shop on the site of the present Maleny primary school.

Pattemore House Open this Saturday

John Robert and Emily Pattemore came to Maleny in 1907 from Ulladulla, seeking good rainfall so they could start a dairy farm. They got that right…

JR died on 10 January 1947 aged 97 years, and at the time, was Maleny’s oldest man. He was survived by 145 direct descendants, including 6 children, 34 grand-children, 68 G grand-children, 30 GG grand-children and 7 GGG grandchildren. He established his dairy farm in North Maleny, “Fairview” (Pattemore House) which is now the only Queensland Heritage listed building in Maleny. The Friends of Pattemore House invite you to visit this Saturday, when Fairview once more will be open to the public. Come and see some fascinating displays about the Pattemore and other families who

lived and worked at Fairview since 1907, raising their families and dairying. Films, oral histories, old photographs and much, much more. Find out how to build a pit-sawn house by hand! Or simply take in the view of the lovely heritage gardens from the wide verandas whilst enjoying the yummiest afternoon teas in town.

We are open on Saturday 28th January from 1 - 4 pm. Pattemore House is at 15, Porters Lane North Maleny. There is plenty of parking and disabled access.

Washing Day at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre this Wednesday!

Join the lovely folk from the Orange Sky Laundry Service outside the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre again this coming Wednesday, 25th January to get your washing done.

Orange Sky Laundry is a charity based in Brisbane, that offers a free mobile laundry service for the homeless. It was established on 4 September 2014 and began operations on 10 October 2014. They operate a simple formula; they provide a platform for every day Australians to connect through a regular laundry service. The focus is on creating a safe, positive and supportive environment for people who are too often ignored or who feel disconnected from the community.

Their volunteers are not social workers or experts on homelessness - but they are empathetic listeners and great conversationalists.

It might sound simple, but we’ve seen first-hand how a positive connection can impact a person’s life. In the hour that it takes to do a load of laundry, Orange Sky volunteers sit down on their orange chairs and have a chat. To date over 2 million kgs of washing has been completed.

You’ll find them out the front of the centre on Wednesday. Just bring your laundry!

Overheard at Maple 3 the other day between a well-known couple around town. A well known Maleny socialite was having a coffee with her best friend. She said to her “To save money, I suggested to one of my grown sons that we all live together in one house. I could tell he didn’t think it would be cost-effective when he asked, “Who’s going to pay the therapist?” (Wonder who was going to need the therapist)

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

We’ve had a very busy week on the lawns. On our Thursday play day, we had two games underway. Helen Uhlmann, Sally Adams and Sarah Widin decided to break from tradition and play Ricochet Croquet for a change. Sarah won convincingly against a double of Sally and Helen with 15 hoops to 7 in a very enjoyable match.

Meanwhile, Ken Barker and Dianne Horsman played Association Croquet with Ken winning 16:14. The Maleny weather produced a very pleasant afternoon for play, and with Dianne’s delicious chocolate cake for afternoon tea, what could be more perfect?

Friday saw our group of friends from Caloundra come up for their monthly visit to enjoy playing Golf Croquet with some of our club members. As always, a very enjoyable time was had by all, despite the weather being a bit unreliable.

scoring match, with Sarah just getting ahead of Nick with a score of 6:5. Donna Manning played Ken Barker, with Donna showing her skills to win with 10 hoops to 6. Wallace Roy must have picked the right mallet to use in his match against Stuart Craig. His roquets were on target, placing him well to play a great forward game and win with 15 hoops to 5.

Dianne Horsman and Lynette Evans played each other in a well matched game with Dianne winning 15:12. These two players are ones to watch in the upcoming Bray pennants competition and their skills are shaping up well in preparation for this.

This week will see our lawns open on Australia Day for a “Come and Try” opportunity. We’re looking forward to welcoming our visitors to this event. All are welcome.

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15.

Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am.

Variations of the game include eXtreme Croquet and Bicycle Croquet. You can introduce your kids and grandkids to croquet at the web site below: https://kids.kiddle.co/Croquet

Our web address is: https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au

Groups are always welcome to come and have a game on our lawns. We even provide a bit of guidance on how to play with a cuppa thrown in. Bargain!

Saturday coaching was well attended. Vince Carbery and Sarah Widin, our coaches, had us working on hoop approaches and take offs across the lawn and we then went on to practice these in a couple of relaxed games. The pointers we receive during these sessions are always helpful in improving our game and we enjoy interesting discussions around strategy and some of the more complex aspects of the game.

Sunday afternoon saw four singles games played. Sarah Widin and Nick Cram had a very close but low
