Look after Mother on Mother’s Day! On Sunday many Australians will spend the day celebrating their mums and other special women in their lives. Some mums may be given cards, owers and gifts, while others may enjoy breakfast in bed or a lunch out. Mother’s Day has long been a part of the Australian calendar, and always held on the 2nd Sunday in May – but where did the dea to dedicate a day to honouring motherhood come from? In 1870, American writer and women's rights activist Julia Ward

Howe rst appealed to women to unite and bring peace throughout the world (later known as the Mother's Day Proclamation). She proposed that a mother's day for peace be commemorated every year. It was not until 1924, following the losses of World War I, that Mother's Day was rst of cially held in Australia. Sydney woman Janet Heyden started the tradition after becoming concerned for the lonely, forgotten aged mothers at Newington State Hospital where she regularly visited a friend. She successfully campaigned for local schools and businesses to donate gifts to the ladies, many of whom had lost their husbands and sons in World War I or had never been wives or mothers because of the war.

There are more than six million mothers in Australia caring for children and other people every day of the year. Hopefully they feel appreciated every day, and over the year, Mother's Day has become an occasion for family reunions, becoming a day when families can get together. It’s predicted that the wonderful eating establishments across the Range will be very busy on Sunday, and thanks to Maleny Commerce, you can also give your mum a lovely surprise by giving her a Maleny Gift Card.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

RIP “Scratchie”

Graham “Scratchie” Wild, member of the Maleny - Peachester pioneering Wild family, passed away on April 29th, 1921. Members of the Maleny Show Society extend their condolences to to Sharon, Penny, Andrea and Ben and the wider Wild Family for your loss.

The Wild Families have all been strong supporters of the Maleny Show Society. There will be a memorial service in his honour at the Peachester Hall on Saturday 15th May at 10.30 a,m. Rest In Peace Graham Wild. https://malenysportandrec.org.au/

FC

Match Report: U14 Girls - (by Coach Pete)

If your club or organisation is an associate member of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club then you can publicise your club results and news in this, our “Community Billboard”.

Game 1. The Maleny Rangers U14 girls team ran on the eld for the rst time this season, 1 player down against a full strength opposition with subs on the bench. Good teamwork, passing and pressure saw Maleny score rst. Beegees scored next to level the score at halftime. The second half saw Beegees attack early but the Maleny Girls were up to the challenge and defended well to weather the storm. More good teamwork and passing combinations saw Maleny hit the back of the net again to move into the lead.

Keep your events diary up to date on the MDSARC Inc Web site so that we all know about your communities important events.

Beegees hit back to level the score and by this stage the girls were beginning to show the strain of only having 10 players. The opposition were rotating subs regularly and the last 10mins saw Maleny under pressure again.

This is your newsletter - let all of Maleny know the latest info from your club every week!

Full credit to the Maleny team for holding out a determined opposition to end the game with a draw. Congrats to Lily M for a great performance in her rst ever game, Alea and Chelsea who shared the goalkeeping duties.

All articles, results, posters and photos (as large sized jpegs, please do not embed these in a Word doc) for inclusion in the weekly sports results should be emailed to

Top effort from the whole team. I’m very proud of how well they played under tough circumstances. Goals: Chloe 1, Bonnie 1 Game 2. Our second game saw us at home again up against NYU. Maleny were able to run on a full team this week but once again the opposition had subs on the bench whereas Maleny did not.

denvergail1@gmail.com no later than 12 noon every Monday.

The game was very evenly balanced with play going back and forth. Maleny seemed to have the upper hand and scored, only to be called offside. Halftime saw the score at 0-0.

Club website:

The second half started with our newest player Cara in goals. Cara has been away from the game for 5 years and did a cracking job in her rst game back. Once again the game was very even but with Maleny having more possession and better teamwork, the girls were able to shut NYU out of our defensive area for most of the time.

www.malenysportandrec.org.au

The lack of fresh players from the bench started to show towards the end of the game and Maleny were unable to put the ball in the net. Final score 0-0. Another good display of teamwork, passing and communication from the Maleny team this week. Jess did an amazing job in defence, running down and taking the ball from the opposition on numerous occasions. Erin had another awesome game and has now set her performance level to high. Excellent work girls. Please follow us on our page at: https://www.facebook.com/ MalenyRangersFC or via the web site:

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny TJanelle Wilson and Gillian Bradley both played away recently in the regional ricochet championships – performing well and a credit to the club. Wallace Roy and Helen Andrews played a nice tight game on Thursday against Bev Sockhill and Lynette Evans winning 10 – 9. Ken Barker and Donna Manning were no match for Sarah Widin who was in blisteringly hot form beating them 22 -14. On Friday Ken teamed up with Bill Habner to win the regional ricochet championship with a picket fence score of 3 wins out of 3 at Nambour. The attached photo shows the presentation with, from left, Bill Habner (Nambour) George Oliver
