Rick Vickers - Volunteer of the Year

Rick Vickers is well known to many on the Blackall Range - he and his wife Priscilla have been Maleny residents for over 20 years. Last week, his services to the community he loves so much were amply rewarded when he was named Volunteer of the Year by the Volunteering Sunshine Coast group.

Rick says he just enjoys doing what he loves doing, but his dedication to community life is outstanding.

Fellow Rotarian Greg Williams, who nominated Rick, said of the humble recipient “Rick has volunteered his time and services to a broad range of significant, difficult, complicated and essential organisational and event volunteering work for over 20 years.”

The Rotary Club of Maleny that he has been a member of 20 years, readily acknowledge him as their club organiser, mentor and master of ceremony specialist.

Rick has volunteered his services to numerous Range community organisations including Red Cross Australia, Maleny Rotary Club, Get Ready Maleny, Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club, Maleny Show Society, Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild, Maleny

Community Centre, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, and Friends of Mary Cairncross Association.

He is the Chairman of the Maleny Aussie Day Expo event, a huge event for the community, cancelled in recent years due to Covid, but about to be relaunched and he is also regularly in demand for his public speaking skills, stepping up as MC for Anzac Day and other local events.

Retiring to Maleny after 40 years with the Australian Defence Force, Rick continues to consult with the ADF on matters of specialised risk

management and also with many other government and emergency departments. As a safety and risk management consultant, he is well suited to be involved in Maleny’s many diverse activities.

His latest role is as a member of the advisory panel to the Sunshine Coast Council regarding their new environmental park, with the recent release of the draft master plan to the public for the proposed Sunshine Coast Ecological Park, formerly 65 hectares of former grazing land adjacent to the existing Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Maleny salutes and thanks you Rick!

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre News

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre welcomes Madonna

Hampson, who joined the Centre on the 22nd May as our new Centre Coordinator.

Madonna has worked in both the corporate and not-for-profit sectors, most recently with Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation, which offers a mentoring and wellbeing program for adults and young people in need.

She knows how to work with people to effect positive change.

MNC President Ian Demack said of Madonna, “I’ve seen first-hand the deft personal touch Madonna brings to her interactions with our staff, our volunteers, and the community. Over the next few months I’m sure you’ll see a lot of positive changes at the MNC, and I’m looking forward to working with Madonna to discover how much we can achieve. Onwards and upwards!”

Community Development Worker

Madonna has been working with the treasurer, Anne Robinson, to review the Neighbourhood Centre’s budget. There have been a few variables that needed to sort through, but the Centre is ready to progress with filling the Community Development Worker position.

So to everyone who applied, thanks for your patience and we’ll keep you in the loop

Recent June Trivia Night

Thanks to everyone who supported the recent Trivia Night on 17 June at the Maleny RSL. Through your generosity. The night raised over $4000, which will help the Centre help those most in need.

The events were extremely well attended, even if the cows in front of Woolworths were a little badly behaved, with some of hiding their woollen knitted coats. Muscle on the Mountain Roared! What a day it was in Maleny last Sunday!

After consecutive years of cancellations due to wet weather and Covid, one of Maleny’s premier events, Muscle on the Mountain, roared back into the Maleny Showgrounds.

The event first started in 2013 and up to this year, had raised a whopping $80,000 already for Mens Health. The weather held on Sunday, and although a little fresh, it didn’t cool anyone off too much.

100’s of gleaming machines were proudly displayed, thrilling generations of car lovers.

The organisers sincerely thank everyone that turned out. There were just over

570 show cars and approximately 2900 people through the gates! A tremendous effort was needed by all to get this unique show back and running after such an extended break.

“We, the Apex Club of Maleny could not have taken it on without our supporters and sponsors, so thank you again to everyone who worked towards making this event happen again, with all proceeds going to Prostate Cancer Foundation.” Said a club spokesperson.

The Rotary Club once more stepped into their role as ace parking Ninja’s, making sure spectators were well accommodated for on the grounds.

Community groups sold food, coffee and refreshments making the day even more worthwhile for local organisations.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

It’s been an interesting week.

Tuesday ricochet croquet. Dianne Horsman and Sally Adams played singles. Dianne won 16 – 10. Lynette Evans and Ken Barker played Helen Andrews and Val Carbery to register a game score to Lynette (Ken takes no credit whatsoever scoring 0 hoops himself) of 11 – 9.

Chris Borlase defeated Donna Manning in a game of singles 26 – 12 on Thursday. Helen Andrews and Val had a resounding victory over Wallace Roy and Sally 11 – 6, while, far away behind the camellias which Wallace has thoughtfully pruned to enable players on each lawn to see each other, Carole Atkinson and Lynette were trouncing their senior opponents Vince Carbery and Sarah Widin to the tune of 13 – 8.

The most fun of the week however was on Saturday. Lynette and Dianne played for Maleny against Al Keetman and Ian Carr from Bribie in the Bray fixture for divisions 3 and 4 pennants. Al has “played up” in Lochwood and is an opponent to be reckoned with. Despite this, Dianne played well to beat him 16 – 6. Ian beat Lynette 22 - 11

One game all. Doubles decides. Dianne stepped up to the plate and made a ten-break putting Bribie under pressure. Lynette came good and went to hoop ten with Dianne pegging her ball out late in the game. The result of the game 22 – 9 to Maleny. We won the rubber 2 – 1. Well done team.

Association Croquet

Association Croquet is a tactical game, usually between two players, consisting of running six hoops in order with two balls, clockwise first and then anticlockwise, and finally hitting the central peg. It is played in a lawn measuring 35yards by 28 yards. The running of a hoop and hitting of the peg scores one point. The maximum score is, therefore, 26 points. Six hoops twice by two balls plus the pegging out.

Association Croquet is a challenging and intriguing sport requiring tactical ability, judgment and skill rather than

Did you know that the game was apparently invented in Ireland in the 1830s and taken to England as a pastime of the aristocracy in the 1850s. Give it a go!.
