Rotary

Changeover 2022

The goal of the Maleny Rotary Club is to be a vibrant Rotary Club with a diverse membership, and serve our community by making a positive difference in the world Rotary Change Over 2022, President Greg hands over to Incoming President Paulette. Fun night, lots of laughter, good company of members and Rotary friends, great food and a little bit of formality. The 2022 Changeover Dinner of Maleny Rotary Club was held at the RSL Hall last Wednesday. The invitation asked people to 'dress to the nines' and many did just that even though it was a cold winter's night. Roly Neiper, a past president himself, performed Master of Ceremonies duties for the evening and made the evening a relaxed and enjoyable one. Greg Williams, having served as President of the club for two years, which he did admirably especially as it was during Covid times, was ready to hand the helm over to incoming President, Paulette Steele. Paulette has already agreed to be president for two years and on the night there were a few people hinting that she

may like to commit to it for three years (which she clearly stated would not be happening…) A special presentation was also made to John Whan who has been a Rotary member for 50 years. Jim Atkinson, Rotary Treasurer, did the presentation as he joined the Maleny Rotary Club in 1983 when John was President. The 2022/2023 committee consists of Paulette Steele (President), Greg William, (Immediate Past President and Environment Director), Michael Gregory (Vice President), Bernice McLennan (Secretary), Jim Atkinson (Treasurer), and other directors Sherryl Gregory, Fran Tickle, Rick Vickers, Phillip Stark and Craig Sim. MDSRC congratulates all involved, knowing the community has another strong committee to carry out the many, many roles that the Rotary Club is responsible for in community and beyond. The Maleny Rotary Club meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at 6-30pm for 7pm. at the Maleny Hotel. Maleny - Open for Business

Your Club News

As we celebrate the huge contribution that the Outridge family have made to Maleny, here is an extract from the Friends of Pattemore House research about the very rst businesses in Maleny.

If your club or organisation is an associate member of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club then you can publicise your club results and news in this, our “Community Billboard”.

The rst Maleny business was the Maleny Sawmill, opened in 1890 by the Laheys. They purchased 6 acres of Portion 1282 from John Graves, who had subdivided his selection. The sawmill was to the south of where Tytherleigh’s was constructed. Tytherleigh’s Store opened in 1909, on the North bank of the Obi Ob. Subsequent businesses clustered around the the Obi Obi Creek, following the construction of the Butter Factory in 1903. The Butter Company Store followed in 1906, before moving to to a large building in 1907 where the ES&A Bank was also housed.

Keep your events diary up to date on the MDSARC Inc Web site so that we all know about your communities important events. This is your newsletter - let all of Maleny know the latest info from your club every week! All articles, results, posters and photos (as large sized jpegs, please do not embed these in a Word doc) for inclusion in the weekly sports results should be emailed to

On the southern approach to the creek, Dunlop’s Butchery opened in 1898 and the Maleny Hotel in 1907.

Baby - it is cold outside!

www.malenysportandrec.org.au

Weather Forecasters are predicting a cold blast to hit southern Queensland over the next week. Temperatures are expected to drop as low as 1C in Brisbane and 0 C in Glasshouse and Nambour. BOM weather forecasters say that it was still a bit too early to tell just how cold it would get. Some Queensland communities have just shivered through their coldest July day on record, and in fact what could be their coldest day of the year. It is not about to get any warmer soon as a northwest cloud band is extending from Queensland’s far north into NSW, bringing widespread rain and an intense cold snap. There is nothing for it other than rug-up - cuddle-up and have another “Bundy + Coke”.

End of an Era

After 27 wonderful years as custodians of Maleny IGA, Rob and Sam Outridge we have decided to sell their business to Season’s IGA Supermarkets. Rob and Sam took over this thriving business in October 1996 from John and Allison Frew. In the rst twelve months we didn’t sleep much and we learnt a whole lot of what not to do again. Settlement will occur on Monday 1st August. Rob said "We feel a great sense of gratitude to the people of Maleny and the Hinterland who have chosen to shop with us for such a long time. Thank you for supporting our business, the dozens of local suppliers and the hundreds of locals we have employed. If you were the parents of one of our juniors, thank you for entrusting your child with us - we loved employing them and we hope they found the experience rewarding. We are comfortable to be passing the baton to Seasons - they will bring new energy into the business and they share our community focus.” If you go to their FaceBook page,

you’ll be able to wander down memory lane as Rob and Sam have posted many nostalgic photos from the nearly three decades they have owned the store. What an enormous part of the fabric of our community they have been. As for Rob and Sam - well we don’t know what life without our IGA will look like. It has been part of Maleny life for a long time! Rob went on to say "We are excited to have a break from retail for a few months – and to have a holiday with our family. Who knows what will come after that?” Who knows indeed - but what we all do know is they so richly deserve their retirement, everyone wishes them all the best for whatever comes next –and says a huge collective “Thank You!” for all you have done for the community. From the community, Rob and Sam, thank you for years of giving back to the community, many organisations have bene ted from your generosity.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny We have had an interesting week, with many results from various competetitions coming through. Firstly, the results from the Association Croquet Pennants competitions have been nalised and we’re proud to announce that our Bray team came second and the Lochwood team came in third. As a small club, this is a tremendous effort. Many thanks to the team captains for their hard work and to the coaches for getting us ready to play. With croquet, there’s always more to learn and strategies to think through in a new way! Our club championships have nished and results nalised. The Division 2 Association Croquet Champion this year is Donna Manning, with Sarah Widin being the runner-up. The attached photo shows Donna being presented with the Division 2 shield by our club president Sarah, watched on (from left to right) by Ken Barker, Nick Cram, Vince Carbery and Val Carbery. Everyone gave their best and enjoyed the friendly and lively competition.

our usual play and coaching days so there’s not much to report there. We’re hoping the weather clears to resume our highly enjoyed Thursday and Sunday play days as well as Saturday morning coaching in the coming week. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am.

Our web address is: https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au For details contact Sarah Widin 0417640704 (President ) Did you know that croquet is played in over 30 countries around the world! There are in excess of 275 Clubs in Australia, 40 in Queensland, including one in Maleny.

Court

Hire.

Our courts may be available for community use or for special events, like workplace teambuilding or social gathering. Our croquet equipment may be available for your guests in some special occasion (e.g. wedding) if suitable grounds are available.

The Division 3 Association Croquet competition was won by Dianne Horsman, with Lynette Evans the runner up. The match between Dianne and Lynette was a very exciting, close one with Dianne narrowly winning by just one hoop. This started a trend with the Division 4 championship nishing in a similar manner with a close run competition between Wallace Roy and Helen Uhlmann. Wallace managed to sneak ahead towards the end to win by one hoop after very even play. A hearty congratulations to both Dianne and Wallace on their achievements. The combination of the busyness of our Championship play and the return of unfriendly weather took its toll on
