Take care as the days continue to get hotter “Heatstroke and Heat Exhaustion are serious health conditions”

Whether it is playing sport or completing adventurous activities and irrespective of age both heat conditions can be a health hazard. The incident where a woman decided to climb one of the Glasshouse Mountains on Monday 4th and succumb to dehydration resulting in her falling and requiring rescue by emergency service personnel shows just how easy a person’s situation can change. Heat illness occurs in strenuous sports, but may also occur in activities such as cricket, golf, and lawn bowls with prolonged

Symptoms of dehydration in adults and children include: • feeling thirsty. • dark yellow and strongsmelling pee. • feeling dizzy or lightheaded. • feeling tired. • a dry mouth, lips and eyes. • peeing little, and fewer than 4 times a day. How do you fix dehydration? 1. Drink Plenty of Fluids. The first thing you need to do in case of dehydration is to drink more fluids. 2. Sip on Coconut Water. 3. Eat High-Water Foods. 4. Use Oral Rehydration Salts. 5. Try IV Fluid Hydration. Recovering from Dehydration Should Be a Priority.

exposure to hot weather. During sports activities participants should “listen to their bodies”. Heat stroke is typically caused by a combination of hot environment, strenuous exercise, clothing that limits evaporation of sweat, inadequate adaptation to the heat, too much body fat, and/ or lack of tness. In warm weather wet sponging will make children feel more comfortable. Drinks should be provided for children playing sport. Clothing for strenuous exercise, and sport in warm conditions, should allow easy evaporation of sweat from the skin. It should be light coloured, light weight and loose tting, and provide protection against the sun.

Redback Cricket Season Begins

Saturday saw Maleny 3rds travel to Cooroy for the opening one day game of the 2021/22 cricket season. Winning the toss, captain Dan Hand decided to bowl. A bit of a loose start by the Redbacks bowlers and a couple of missed chances saw Cooroy move to 0 for 87 after 21 overs. Greg Corkin then came into the attack with immediate success, claiming a wicket with his rst ball. Maleny then set about restricting the run rate which paid dividends with the wickets starting to ow. Corkin (4 for 24 off 8 overs) grabbed another three scalps, Brock Barry (3 for 22 off 8 overs) also skittled three batters, before Dan Hand (2 for 24 off 7 overs) wrapped the innings up. At the end of 40 overs Cooroy had amassed 9 for 147. The highlight of Maleny's time in the eld was a stunning diving Ben Brown catch. Maleny entered their batting innings keen to be aggressive and knock off the required total quickly. Openers Ryan Harlow (23 runs) and Jonty Corkin (16 runs) had Maleny on the front foot, before the loss of quick wickets had the Redbacks in trouble at 4 for 54. Marc Senator (17 runs) and Kyle Jackson (17 runs) steadied the innings, before Dan Hand (26 runs) led Maleny to a chance of victory. However, the Redbacks fell agonisingly short of the required total, being bowled out 10 runs away from triumph. This week sees the Redbacks play their rst game at home against Palmwoods.
