Paula and Bridgette Powers rescue work with the sea birds has always been their life for nearly 20 years. In caring for the birds creates a long list of regular costs for food and medication for their patients. On top of that there is $500 a week for rent on their rehabilitation centre. Now, the owner has decided to sell the property forcing a tough decision on the Twinnies. Paula said, “It’s serious and to be honest, if we can’t raise the $100,000 we will probably have to close. Our rent has increased signi cantly over the last little while placing us in this situation.” We’ve been thinking about what our other options are and to be honest, we’ve come to the conclusion that this is our base and it

Mr. Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher Federal Member for Fisher Help is at home for older residents wanting to stay independent longer
For older Australians, planning for retirement can be a dif cult and intricate process. If you are starting to nd it harder to do the things you have done on repeat for years, it is time to start thinking about your future. If you read through the following links they will go a long way in giving you a solid starting point. Knowledge is power, after all. Older Australians should be able to keep more of what they earn. A Dutton government would support older Australians who choose to work more by doubling the amount of income age pensioners and veteran service pensioners can earn without reducing pension payments. This change will make it more worthwhile for older Australians to pick up an extra shift or work extra hours and help small and regional businesses deal with labour shortages.

Up to $300,000 a day is being spent on the near-empty quarantine facility at Wellcamp, outside of Toowoomba. This facility is not and will never be owned by Queenslanders. The contract for this facility was awarded to a client of Labor lobbying rm Anacta without a tender. Taxpayers are also being kept in the dark about the size of the bill they are paying for a private health provider to deliver onsite medical services at the state government’s Wellcamp quarantine facility whilst it is near empty. Money wasted at the Wellcamp facility could have delivered another 50 or more intensive care beds in Queensland hospitals in the middle of a health crisis. This Government is creating a debt bomb that our kids will live with for a generation.

Have your say on the new Maleny Streetscape Maleny’s much-loved Maple Street has been selected by Council to continue minor placemaking streetscape improvements in 2023. The concept design was revealed at a Maleny Forums meeting at the Community Centre on July 26th which was attended by about 1200 people. What is important to you? Council have placed a concept design on their site and would like to know the community’s feedback to understand the key areas of Maple Street which need minor improvement and if the concept design needs any updating to meet the values and vision of the community. The budget is limited. Share your feedback on the Maleny Streetscape Diagram (2022) before Monday 15 August 2022, via the online survey. Please go to this link:
updating to meet the values and vision of the community. Placemaking involves the community in the design and management of public spaces to help create a “sense of place”, or unique identity for a town It’s about improving public spaces to strengthen Maleny as a destination and encourage the community and local businesses to invest in events, local shops and enjoy improved natural assets. It is important to note that Council’s current position is to retain the rst stage of streetscape works completed in 2010, as described above. In this updated design it is estimated that there will be a loss of approximately 8 car parks in all down the street. This will compound the already tight parking position.
https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/malenyplacemaking-and-streetscape-project? fbclid=IwAR0459nVk9waRexhVccWSvURvBpRlktswGL3q1LpBXeIBY6t8bKfxp695Y
Overview Feedback revealed that the character of the streetscape upgrade should be unique to Maleny and incorporate the artistic, rural, historical, cooperative and organic nature of the community. Part of the streetscape construction works were undertaken in 2010 and outcomes were: •
The new roundabout entrance
•
The Teak Street intersection including pavement from Tesch Park
•
A safer pedestrian crossing
•
The area with seating in front of the Community Hall
•
The area in front of Cooke Park
Background From July 2022 Council will undertake community engagement for a ‘Review & Refresh – Have we got it right’ process on the Maleny Streetscape Diagram (2022). As part of this, Council will seek feedback from the community to understand the key areas of Maple Street which need improvement for the limited budget, and if the concept design needs any https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News

Urban design expert Professor Greg Mews urged the community to speak up and ensure the new look Maple Street was a space created for everyone. He continued that the design is not about the individual, it’s about having accessibility to all and starting with the most vulnerable. Community members and groups are encouraged to get involved with this community engagement across July and August and have their say on Maleny’s, Maple Street. A streetscape design document was distributed to ratepayers with the latest rate notices and is further available through the Sunshine Coast Council. Following all of Council’s community consultation a nal concept plan will be revealed in late 2022 before construction begins in mid-2023 with a 2025 completion date.

End of an Era
After 27 wonderful years as custodians of Maleny IGA, Rob and Sam Outridge we have decided to sell their business to Season’s IGA Supermarkets. Rob and Sam took over this thriving business in October 1996 from John and Allison Frew. In the rst twelve months we didn’t sleep much and we learnt a whole lot of what not to do again. Settlement will occur on Monday 1st August. Rob said "We feel a great sense of gratitude to the people of Maleny and the Hinterland who have chosen to shop with us for such a long time. Thank you for supporting our business, the dozens of local suppliers and the hundreds of locals we have employed. If you were the parents of one of our juniors, thank you for entrusting your child with us - we loved employing them and we hope they found the experience rewarding. We are comfortable to be passing the baton to Seasons - they will bring new energy into the business and they share our community focus.” If you go to their FaceBook page,

What an enormous part of the fabric of our community they have been. As for Rob and Sam - well we don’t know what life without our IGA will look like. It has been part of Maleny life for a long time! Rob went on to say "We are excited to have a break from retail for a few months – and to have a holiday with our family. Who knows what will come after that?” Who knows indeed - but what we all do know is they so richly deserve their retirement, everyone wishes them all the best for whatever comes next –and says a huge collective “Thank You!” for all you have done for the community. From the community, Rob and Sam, thank you for years of giving back to the community, many organisations have bene ted from your generosity.

Brisbane Ekka …still fun for the family
The Brisbane Ekka is once again upon us and we can once again expect the westerly winds.
I
n the past, one of the annual events most looked upon by people from all around Queensland was the Brisbane Exhibition, or as it was more commonly known The Ekka. It was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID epidemic. It is now returning between the 6th and 14th, August, 2022. Starting the rst week in August each year The Ekka served to bring together Queenslands country and city folk. It was also known as the time of year that the westerly winds came to Brisbane.
The rst show I can remember attending was in 1952 as a pre-teenage person. In those days the only way to successfully get to the show was either by train, bus or tram with all coming all the way into the Ekka Grounds.
Whilst the rst show to be held at the present site was in January 1876 it was called an exhibition, and over 17000 people attended. That is exceptional since the population of Brisbane at the time was only 22,000. In 1921 King George V allowed the show to be named The Royal Brisbane Show . This followed a

The Ekka grounds also has a railway station. Today this plays a much larger part in getting people into and out of the Ekka grounds. This station only operates during the Brisbane Ekka and other major events held within the Ekka Grounds.

Go and Enjoy The Ekka 2022.
…still fun for the family
First stop was always Side Show Alley. It was always a crush of people, but it was the sounds and smells that excited. The rhythmic sound of the ringing of the bell and the beating of the drum at Sharman’s Boxing Tent. It was a sound that you never heard anywhere else and the spruiker urging younger men to ght for their “girls affections”.
up with the special Ekka fairy oss and the iconic Ekka Strawberry Sundaes.. All of this was enough to make one feel sick in the “tummy”, but there was no way you were going to miss it.
Then it would go get the the dagwood dogs with plenty of tomato sauce, which would inevitably dribble all down your clothes. This would be followed
Maybe this is a testament to how many events are now on to entertain the people of Queensland, or maybe it just a sign of the times and peoples changing view of what makes good entertainment.
In the 1950s and 1960s it was nothing to have over 800,000 people visit the Ekka each year. Today, the number is somewhere between 350,000 and 400,000.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Much has been said of recent weeks about the social housing crisis throughout Australia, and indeed South East Queensland. Two speci c cases are women and children eeing from dangerous domestic violent situations and the other is older women who are being forced to sleep in their cars as they cannot afford to rent and there is a lack of social housing. There has also been much media attention to the Queensland State Government paying huge amounts of money to have the Wellcamp Facility at Toowoomba ready to be occupied, the leasing of hotels and motels for emergency accommodation in respect to the Covid virus and the new Pinkenba Quarantine facility near the Brisbane Airport come on line. Unlike the Wellcamp facility and the leased hotels and motels, the Pinkenba facility is owned by the Commonwealth Government and is to be operated by the Queensland Government.
Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” Truthful Jones tells of the time that he was ying to see friends in Sydney. He went to the Brisbane airport and was surprised to nd that there was a security scare in full operation. An individual, later discovered to be a state school teacher, was arrested trying to board a ight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a square, a slide rule, and a calculator. Queensland’s Attorney General believes the man is a member of the notorious Algebra movement. He is being charged with carrying weapons of math instruction.
There have been many excuses from the Queensland Government as to why all these facilities were needed to be on hand. Mostly they were never used and their existence could be explained, not by necessity, but by the playing of political games.
“Al-gebra is a very fearsome cult, indeed”, the Attorney General said. “They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on a tangent in a search of absolute value. They consist of quite shadowy gures, with names like “x” All of this whilst the above mentioned needs remain in our and “y”, and, although they are frequently community. The holding of leases on hotels and motels, at great cost to the Queensland taxpayer should be terminated referred to as “unknowns”, we in the quickest possible time. know they really Not only is the government paying leases on Wellcamp, but is belong to a paying private companies to operate the centre on behalf of common the government. These poorly thought out arrangements denominator should also be terminated at the rst possible chance. and are part of Down through the ages Australia haas always had a the axis of quarantine facility. Thought should be given to just how the medieval with Pinkenba facility could be converted to use for SHORT coordinates in termed social accommodation. Understandably, this facility every country. is not designed or built for for long-term accommodation, but “As the great Greek philanderer Isosceles it could be an important interim measure to make sure used to say, there are three sides to every people don’t have to sleep in their cars or as emergency triangle. - my truth, someone else’s truth accommodation for domestic violence victims. and the real truth” There would be organisations such as Salvation Army or similar organisations who have the expertise to operate it on the governments behalf. Or would it be best left unused all because of some political gamesmanship whilst desperate people need emergency accommodation?

Succulents are the answer!
With the huge array of varieties, textures, tones, and shapes, it's never been easier to design your very own succulent bowl that will take pride of place on your bench top, balcony or garden. Step 1: Layer some rocks or pebbles in the base of the pot if you have them - this will help with drainage.
some pebbles to the top – it looks great and stops the soil from splashing up when you water them, but don't worry if you don't have the room.
Step 2: Add your succulents! Carefully take them out of their planters and gently loosen the roots a little, then arrange them how you would like them to sit in the pot.
Step 4: Once you're nished, pop your succulent bowl in its designated spot. Choose somewhere that's well lit – they work perfectly on a windowsill or patio. Water it sparingly once a week or so.
Step 3: Once you're happy with your arrangement, add the potting mix to ll the bowl. You may have to shift the succulents carefully with your hands to ll in the gaps. This is where you might like to add
Once you've planted your succulent bowl, you'll nd that they multiply very fast! It's really easy to grow succulents from cuttings as this happens. We have a large range available.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top” Grey Nomads give me some smiles!!!
N
o matter what, one thing that never fails to bring me a great amount of silent joy is watching “happily married” grey nomad couples backing a caravan at a caravan park.
After speaking with many of them the story is Usually that dear old Winston ,after spending 60 years in accounting decided to spend his golden years with Margerine his dear beloved wife and hit the road in a brand spanking new $100k Landcruiser and a $120k caravan in behind. Nothing wrong with that - they should be able to enjoy themselves as we all do, however having never owned so much as a 6x4 box trailer in Sydney’s inner suburbs and having the in depth knowledge of being able to quote “it’s just a trailer, how hard can it possibly be?” Winston feels competent that he’s more than up for the task. IThis is where I’d usually fold out the camp chair and crack a lemonade and watch the ensuing chaos. Now it varies from couple to couple but usually it’s the husband behind the wheel with the wife guiding him, now sometimes they’ve perfected it, old Margie moving her hands and arms with the precision equal to that of a ight deck crew member on an aircraft carrier and the task of backing the van is done smoothly, quickly and ef ciently with minimal con ict. But then there’s the others, now I’d be lying through my teeth if I said I didn’t enjoy watching, sorta like watching a train crash in that you don’t wanna look but at the same time you wanna see what’s going to happen. This usually begins with dear old Margie hopping out and walking into one of the caravans many blindspots where she
Sams proposed route - Maleny to Maleny!
will begin ailing her arms and hands like a mad woman possessed whilst shouting “LEFT HAND DOWN!!!” with a 2 second pause “NOT THAT FAR, JUST A BIT!!!” at this point Winston having no concept of when reversing things are opposite will attempt to back the caravan in reverse all whilst Margie begins squawking like a guinea fowl with its feathers plucked by an overzealous Kelpie with an equal degree of rapid unpredictable movements. At this stage Winston will normally hear the crunch of a wheelie bins plastic shattering or the thud of a caravan rear just kissing a tree with a signi cant increase in volume from dear old Margie who despite being raised in a good Christian household (as is often told to the grandkids) unleashes the rst insult towards her dearly beloved, Winston. Upon hearing this will undoubtedly return re with a volley of vengeance towards his betrothed “till death do us part” as he apparently tries to accelerate this process by reversing and hooking in a full left lock swinging the caravan’s arse right towards Margie as she dodges it with surprising ease. At this time she goes from that dearly loved gentle wife to “Bridezilla” in the blink of an eye. At rst she looks like she has some sort of whirling dervish drug induced mania. She then stands mute, almost apoplectic with anxiety, looking on with daggers in her eyes.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top” Grey Nomads give me some smiles!!! Continued from previous page This con ict usually lasts a mere 30 mins as they eventually settle for a crooked van and a few hearty glasses of “tolerance tonic” whilst discussing with other travelling nomads how wonderful life is out “on the open road”. However, if one of them is a perfectionist it may take up to 1-2hrs for them to get it

perfectly into place. During this time period the majority of the other blokes near by will stand on the grass with a stubbie in hand discussing everything about Winnies stuf ng up. This time is spent by their partners considering their life choices convening in groups around one or 2 caravans. Hearing our Bonnie and Clyde now using language so severe that the mothers are ushering their children inside to actually play video games on that accursed screen. For the moment this appears to be a better alternative to the upcoming parent teacher interviews when little Johnny decides to recite the new words that he heard on school holidays courtesy of Winston. Dear Margarine now says i”'m getting a beer sitting down and watching the clown in the circus” leaving poor old Winnie to nish the job! I shared this to a camping page and am currently having small tiffs with people jumping on the stereotypical situation with comments similar to: “Young know it all, won’t offer to help anyone”. Fun times, some people just don’t seem to have a sense of humour.
What is it about the price of petrol and diesel
Can somebody explain to me just. how the price of petrol and diesel is calculated? Have you noticed that a few months ago the price of petrol was about $2.30 and the government cut the rate of excise duty by approximately 25 cents. The price dropped for a few days, but since then it has again risen to the previous price, even though the Singapore price, on which Australia’s price is calculated has fallen. The price of diesel is worse, even though it takes less re ning than petrol. What will happen to the price when the excise is returned to normal? Is it possible that motorists are being taken as “bunnies” or is it that the fuel re ners simply don’t care - mum and dad retailers are not the problem.
