Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Nothin' but Blue Skies... With the topic of rain, or lack of it, on everyone’s lips, this week we bring you an interesting chart of Maleny's Rainfall since 1893. Compiled by Mal Somerville over 25 years, and reproduced here courtesy of the Maleny Historical Society, it records the 10 wettest and 10 driest years. Laying 455m above sea level, Maleny is known for its warm and temperate climate and normally, an abundance of rainfall averaging about 66.5 inch per year.

According to https://www.weather-atlas.com February is our wettest month with August the month with the least rainfall. History has recorded that in 1918, there was a severe drought in Maleny that saw the Obi Obi Creek stop flowing. The late Fred Porter wrote an account of this drought in his “John Porter Family In Australia” memoirs, written in 1985, reproduced here.

"The 1918 season was very dry and 1919 much worse. The greatest drought Maleny has known. The Obi-Obi was dry, except for a large water-hole just below the present dam site (then Gibson’s land). At “Wongabel”, the only available water was obtained from several springs which had to be cleared and deepened constantly. The drought broke in the last week of 1919 with three days of cyclonic wind and pouring rain. Cattle were poor and literally froze to death; they stood in creeks, gullies and water courses until they dropped as the running water was warmer than the wind and rain. We hunted them out, but they immediately returned. We got our two work horses and slide and transferred them one at a time into bails, barn, several small sheds and even under the tank stand at the house. They were so frozen

we rolled them off at shelter and thus saved many. I think our total loss on all farms was 65 head of grown cattle. Of course, we had already lost some from weakness and in bogs etc, and at the Coast where we had sent dry stock. One farmer lost 105 head from a herd of 110 after having spend £2,000 on drought fodder George Quince on the property later purchased lost heavily in stock from the cyclone. I recall that the little creek running through the farm was lined on both sides by dead cows after the rain cleared. A curious feature of the latter months of this drought were the extremely heavy dews experienced. Every morning at sunrise you would feel sure rain

Rotary Club of Maleny World Polio Day Fund Raising Dinner

For more than 35 years Rotary International (RI) and its partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Whilst we’re close to eradicating polio, we’re not done yet. In 1988 there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. Today only two countries (Afghanistan and Pakistan) report cases of wild poliovirus. According to the WHO, if all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. Rotary has committed to raising $50 million per year for polio eradication. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total commitment of $150 million each year. The Rotary Club of Maleny donates a minimum of $1,000 each year to ending polio worldwide. must have fallen overnight, the fog was so dense and the place so wet. I believe there is a simple scientific explanation but it was none-the-less remarkable and must have contributed to keeping plant life in existence. Another observation worthy of note is that while cattle starved, horses thrived as they pawed and bashed up paspalum root clumps to eat, apparently they were very nutritious.” Note; the Porter Family Farm referred to was “Wongabel”, in North Maleny, where Stephen Porter still lives today.

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston Northern Wetlands Trails Open I was delighted to attend the official opening of the new walking trail on the UnityWater leased area on the Maleny Community Precinct last week. With more than two kilometres of trails, the new network offers an easy walk through the Northern Wetlands, paving the way for environmental discovery and affording great birdwatching opportunities and observation of many varieties of local native flora and fauna.

I would like to acknowledged the efforts of former local councillor Jenny McKay and retiring Unitywater chairman Jim Soorley in bringing the trails to fruition – Jenny McKay and Jim Soorley were instrumental in sourcing funding and support for the trail network to be constructed.

forest which form part of the sewage treatment process – the wetlands take up treated effluent discharged from the STP and remove nutrients and sediments,” he said. “It’s a wonderful way we can use nature to help us do our job.

The Unitywater Northern Wetlands were established in the Precinct in 2014 as a natural way to filter out nutrients, pollutants and sediments from treated water passing through.

The added benefit of this process is that we can provide a beautiful recreational area for locals and visitors to enjoy.

Council and Unitywater have worked closely to construct the trail network and install signs, which opens up even more of this special Precinct to our community. Jim Soorley said a $17 million upgrade to the Maleny Sewage Treatment Plant was undertaken in 2014. “As part of the works, we established the wetland and planted an irrigated

Our contribution to this precinct is just one of the ways Unitywater gives back to our communities and through our commitment to innovation, we’ll continue to deliver sustainable solutions to complement our traditional water and sewerage services.” So come and explore the new trails at the Maleny Community Precinct wetland, accessible off Porters Lane. Quota International Of Maleny

Many locals have been asking about what is happening to the much loved and respected Maleny Quota Organisation, after earlier in March the Quota International Board of Directors Head Office, voted to propose the dissolution of Quota International Inc. or the sale of the final Quota International office unit. The primary cause of their decision was the drop of Quota’s membership world-wide below a level that is viable to sustain the organisation going forward. In order to allow for the participation of all voting delegates throughout the world, a ballot containing the proposal to dissolve Quota’s international structure was sent out to clubs world-wide in mid-February 202, allowing individual clubs to vote with their members on how clubs could continue on without the Quota International structure. Here is a a final message from the Immediate Past President of Quota International of Maleny, Val France (2018-2020). "Tomorrow Wednesday 30th September 2020 will be a sad day for many of us around the world and for many of us in Maleny and the Hinterland and other places

within RD15. I still ask myself whether we as a club have done the right thing in dissolving? I then remind myself that this was the decision made by two thirds of our members and so on reflection, it must be the right decision. Some of us will walk through our Quota door and gently close it behind them with great sadness and that will be the end of their service to the community.

Others will open another door and be welcomed by another service or community club, and their valuable skills will continue to be used until it is time to stop and start accepting service from others. Neither way is wrong. Both ways are right. It is a choice of each individual and one we have to accept. Many of Quota Maleny members have dedicated many many years to serving others. Some no longer have the continued energy it takes to keep serving and feel it is time for them to be served by others. Some of us are now at a turning point in our lives and are wondering ‘what do I do now without Quota in my life’?

life. Each of us will finally make a decision and move forward. But I truly hope that like sisters born from the same womb, we will still remain Quota sisters at heart, and will always be there for one another, especially in times of need, but also to share the good times in our lives. Go forward my Quota sisters. It has been a joy to be part of your lives and you part of mine. Stay well, stay safe, be happy. ”Val France.

Restrictions eased recently and here is a quick summary of what's changed from 4pm Friday 2 October: • Allow standing drinking and eating indoors and outdoors where operating under a COVID Safe Plan or Checklist.

What changed at 1am Thursday 1 October Outdoor density requirements relaxed for businesses with a COVID Safe Plan or Checklist to one person per 2 square metres. The maximum number of attendees permitted at outdoor events with a COVID Safe Event Checklist has been increased from 500 to 1000 people per event. The seated capacity of outdoor stadiums and amphitheatres has been increased from 50 per cent to up to 75 per cent with a COVID Safe Plan in place. The requirements for occupant density for accommodation providers has been clarified.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Ken Barker and Vince Carbery competed to see who could make the most fundamental errors in their game on Thursday. Short roquets were missed. Simple approach shots were fluffed. Hoops were bombed.

demonstrating the approach shot, one of the most important in croquet, to Janelle Wilson, Priscilla Vickers, Wallace Roy, Sarah (behind Wallace) and Lynette Evans.

Fortunately, an approaching storm allowed an early cessation and, with the scores at 4 –3 in Vince’s favour they both claimed unfinished game status for the debacle.

The shot attempts to place the blue striker ball 15 to 30 cm directly in front of the hoop and the black croqueted ball beyond the hoop so that blue can rush it somewhere useful after making the hoop.

Sarah Widin, Gillian Bradley, Donna Manning and Lynette Evans were much more sensible playing a game where no scores were recorded.
