Mahjong in Maleny What is Mahjong - and how is it played? Mahjong is always played with four players seated around a table. Tiles are shuf ed, die are cast, and rituals involving the allocation of tiles and then the exchange of tiles begin. The rst person to match a hand of 14 tiles and thus "call mahjong" ends the game, whereupon tiles are scored and a winner is declared. If you are thinking of learning, or for players wanting to get a game in, we have tracked down some info that might help budding or keen players. Val Rickaby is the contact for mahjong beginners and lessons in Maleny, please call her if you are just learning to discuss 5494 2553. There is also a regular playing group for more experienced players, meeting at St George’s Anglican Church at 2 Walkers Drive Maleny on Fridays. Please contact them for further details: 5499 9130.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

hese have been unusual times for our club, with rain disrupting coaching and play. Nonetheless, there is much to report on as you’ll see below.

We managed some fun, casual play on Thursday afternoon 2/12, with only a small handful of us facing down the grey clouds. Sarah Widen took on Helen Uhlmann and Lynette Evans in a light hearted match under the watchful and helpful eye of Donna Manning who generously handed out second chances and bisques to Helen and Lynette to make up for some of our less desirable attempts at approaching the hoop! It was a great learning time for us and no scores were recorded for the obvious reason that it would have been grossly unfair to Sarah who received no such advantages as the more experienced player! Saturday 4/12 saw coaching well attended, with a great deal of much needed practice of various skills, including hoop approaches, take offs, rolls and drives. We look forward to using these skills to good effect on our next play day. Sunday 5/12 saw no play on the lawns as we were busy enjoying the very happy event of our Christmas party! Thanks so much to Donna Manning for organising the venue and to Kath Smith for helping to set up.

man of the hour was Vince Carbery, who was honoured for his long term commitment to coaching at our club. We have all bene tted greatly from his experience, patience and advice. He was presented with an award to hang on his wall, having been of cially immortalised in poetic form in what is sure to become a literary classic “The Ode of Thanks for the Top Tips of Our Tip Top Coach”. Vince, you are a true living legend. Looking around the happy faces and observing the lively conversations during this event, it was a reminder of how fortunate we are to be members of our small but friendly club. Start times on play days, Thursday, and Sunday, have changed because of hotter weather. They are now 2.00 for 2.30 p.m. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am For details contact, or Contact Sarah Widin President 0417 640 704. There is also much information about the club on the web site below.

Everyone contributed to a delicious array of food for a buffet style lunch and we enjoyed unwrapping our Secret Santa gifts. Thanks everyone for your contributions. It must be noted, however, that the
