Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Vote for Maleny's Travelling Jackaroo hen a young man with dreams of helping others through his own endeavours left Maleny’s main street on a tractor on Sunday 21st March 2021, no-one could have grasped then how many other dreams he would inspire.

W

has attracted 91,000 followers, including radio and TV stations all keen to report on his adventures. Last week, he was nominated for a Local Hero Award - here are the details in Sam’s own words.

Cheered on by the locals as he left, and greeted warmly by all the Qld towns he travelled through as he chugged his way north, here was a smiling faced 18 year old, P-plates still on his very unusual rig, vowing to work his way around Australia. Rattling his charity tins at shows, pubs, community events and anywhere that will have him, his efforts thus far have raised so much money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Dolly’s Dream and the Lights on the Hill charities, that he’s spawned a huge following both at home and overseas. His personal focus is raising awareness about mental health issues, especially in the rural sector, and Sam gives presentations at schools, runs movies at Showgrounds and gives endless interviews on why he is doing all this. His blog https://www.facebook.com/ thetravellingjackaroo

"I am extremely honoured to have been announced as the Royal Flying Doctor Service Local Hero

Award Recipient for the Brisbane Region. This is also one of my favourite videos of all time of my trip so far, that the RFDS has worked hard to create, so please feel free to give it a watch. Voting for the QLD local hero award, which is to be announced in the coming months, is on the link here, as well as are all the other award winners for the different regions and their stories (check them out!)”

Come on Maleny, open the link and vote for Sam, the Maleny Boy on a Tractor!

Maleny Wood Expo Cancelled

It is with much disappointment to announce that we have decided to defer the recommencement of the annual Maleny Wood Expo until 2023.

We and our exhibitors have been actively planning this year’s Expo since September 2021. Things had looked very promising up to December and we genuinely looked forward to a bumper event to reignite community enthusiasm, and a wonderful Expo experience. However, the rapid emergence of the omicron variant of COVID 19 across Queensland and the country, has forced us to seriously rethink our plans. The factors that are crucial to us are the health and wellbeing of the local community, the support and ability of our exhibitors and visitors to participate, and our capacity to keep faith with our visitors by providing an outstanding event. We have reached the point where with only 8 weeks to go, a decision had to be made about whether it was safe and viable for the Maleny Wood Expo to go ahead, and unfortunately we are not con dent at this point that we can deliver on these three crucial factors. We remain optimistic though (it’s all we can do through these times), and believe that by now putting our efforts into working with exhibitors and our partners to bring a reinvigorated and outstanding Expo to the Sunshine Coast in 2023 will put us in a good place for next year. We are incredibly grateful for the community's patience and understanding through this tough decision. It has not been an easy one for us to make. We hope to see you next year! A Message from Orange Sky Services in Maleny

Monday, 7 February 2022

Orange Sky Australia is the world’s rst free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness – an idea founded in a Brisbane garage by two 20year-old mates, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett. Orange Sky Australia is thrilled with the support from your wonderful community in getting our Maleny Service up and running. Cheryl Gadsby (Community Engagement Co-Ordinator for Orange Sky on the Sunshine Coast) SAID; ’We had washing from our very rst shift so we see the need for our service in your area. We wash in your beautiful part of the world every Wednesday between 9am to 12pm (outside the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre) utilising our Sunshine Coast Van, Mikey.” Orange Sky will provide free washing and drying to anyone who attends. If you are in need, have no rainwater, washing machine broken down, Orange Sky offers our free service to all who care to use it, no questions asked. No detergent necessary, just bring your washing and we do the rest. Feel free to sit on one of our orange chairs and chat with a volunteer while we wash. We offer clean clothes and non judgemental conversation to all. Please share on your own social media network to get the word out to as many as we can.

A New Website Made Easy for Your Club

Whether you're running a business or a community group, the last two years have taught us one thing. No website - No business. Now we've been lucky here in Queensland and especially in Maleny, but in the past two years, we've made a massive leap in the digital space. Many businesses found themselves without customers when the lockdowns happened. The government even handed out funds for businesses and community groups to build websites to continue operations. Is 2022 the year for you to upgrade or build a new website? If so, you could nd a chat with Johannes Klupfel, who runs malenywebdesign.com.au will help.

Rosetta Books Providing Covid Safe Options Great service from Rosetta Books of Maleny as well as home delivery, you can phone your order through on 5435 2134 and collect at the door if you'd rather not enter shops at present.

Johannes and his wife Shauna moved here in 2012 and started a business after working many years as full time volunteers with a not-for-pro t group in Townsville. Back then, they found it challenging to get the services they needed and decided to start a business to help local groups and businesses with their digital needs. Websites, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, Email Marketing, Marketing Automation - all the things volunteers in our many clubs can struggle with. Johannes can listen to your needs and make it easy. He is already working with several Maleny clubs on their website needs and welcomes your enquiries about how he can make the whole process a breeze for you. Visit their website https://malenywebdesign.com.au/ or give them a call on 5391 4977 – and get a website you can be proud of.

Helping you to shop local and helping to support local business!

Building the Maleny- Landsborough Road With thanks to the Friends of Pattemore house for the following story Prior to the rst visits by explorers and early settlers, the Blackall Range was known only to the First Nations peoples, who travelled along their pathways through the scrub and forest to Baroon for the annual Bunya Festival. From the early 1870s the abundant supply of cedar and beech on the steep-sided plateau attracted many timber getters. They successfully hacked their way up the range, but there was no route suitable for bullock wagons. The rst track from Mellum Creek (Landsborough) to Bald Knob was cut by Isaac Burgess (the Blackall Range’s rst land selector, in November 1878) and his men in 1880, and from there to Obi Obi Creek (Maleny) by Joseph Eyles, Francis Dunlop and Tom Maddock. In 1883 the Minister of Lands was welcomed by the Blackall Range residents who told him “Your visit to the Blackall Range will show you the many dif culties the small number of selectors have had in opening up this magni cent

agricultural land, the outlay and labour in the clearing and making of roads having been accomplished by the unaided efforts of the selectors themselves”. In 1884, the surveyor Alfred Delisser compared routes “likely to give access to the Blackall Range”. Of these, he said the road from Mellum Creek “is extremely steep still in some places, it is principally used by the timber getters as it leads down to Coochin Creek saw mill”. This was the timber track cut by Burgess and others in 1880. As late as 1910 this route was described as “one of the worst pieces of road in Queensland”. Nonetheless the 1880 timber track forms the backbone of what today is the Maleny-Landsborough Road. Construction of the MalenyLandsborough Road started in 1922 and was one of the rst roads in Queensland constructed under a Main Roads scheme to provide employment during the

Depression. It was sealed with bitumen in 1927.

The Challenge of Bald Knob The timber track cut in 1880 went over the top of Bald Knob (now called Wilkes Knob) on land selected by James Clark. It was a dif cult and unnecessary climb, but one with a spectacular view. Isaac Burgess claimed he could cut a detour around the north of the knob in four days. His track, made in the early 1880's, is now called Hovard Road, but for a long time was known as “The Fourday". It is reported that he actually took two weeks! A third track had existed since the early 1880’s, along the south of Bald Knob, but it was often impassable. It was nally constructed in the 1930’s. On its completion in 1935 the Courier Mail claimed it would open up “new and attractive country to tourists.” It is the road now know by locals as the Ice Box. The Range Croquet Club - Maleny We ventured into new territory on Thursday 3rd. Several players commenced ricochet, another form of croquet to association, very similar, but with a different approach to tactics and slightly different rules of play. It was a steep, but necessary learning curve for the eight people involved as we are entering a combined team, “Ranbour = Range + Nambour” in the ricochet pennants tournament this year. Several players have expressed an interest in participating in the Lochwood and Bray pennants competitions, association tournaments where we are elding teams as well – a tribute to the strength of the club. Vince Carbery and Lynette Evans teamed up to play Donna Manning and Val Carbery in a game of association doubles on Sunday 6th. Lynette, who is playing in Bribie on the weekend of the 12th and 13th, welcomed the experience of partnering Vince as preparation. They went down 9 – 12 to Donna Manning and Val Carbery who are both division 2 players and in ne form. Sarah Widin and Wallace Roy had a wild time ducking in and out of torrential rain bullets to lose a tight, fun- lled game to Helen Andrews and Ken Barker 6 – 8. Robert Lee and Wallace are fundamental to the care of our lawn. Robert has been invaluable in caring for the “greens” mower, the “old John Deere” which delivers the ne cut required for precision play. In the attached photo, the dynamic duo demonstrate their technical versatility by addressing the problem

of leaking irrigation pipes, a job which occupied nearly a full day. We, as a club, are very grateful for the amount of work that they put into maintaining the lawn Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged at 2.15 and started by 2.30. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am.
