Maleny RSL to commemorate 50 years since cessation of hostilities in Vietnam

To help stem the spread of communism in Asia Australia commits its first soldiers to the conflict in Vietnam in 1962. Our Vietnam War had begun when Australia committed 30 highly skilled military advisors - The Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV)) to work alongside the South Vietnamese.

The AATTV involvement was increased to 73 in September 1964, and then to 112 in June 1965. Its strength peaked in 1970 when 217 advisors were in place. From early 1971, as part of Australia's decision to reduce its commitment to the war, the size of the Team was gradually reduced before it was fully withdrawn in December 1972.

Australia's participation in the war was formally declared at an end when the Governor-General issued a proclamation on the 11th January 1973. The only combat troops remaining in Vietnam were a

platoon guarding the Australian embassy in Saigon, which was withdrawn in June 1973. During that period almost 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam. 15,381 National Servicemen served in Vietnam. Of all the Australian servicemen serving a total of 521 died in the war.

2023 is, in many ways, the Year of the Vietnam Veteran. As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War (1962-1973) it is time to honour the lives of these extraordinary servicemen and women – their service, their sacri they have created; the contributions they have made to Australia, and the dignity with which they have carried forward the ANZAC Spirit. Also on Friday 18 August 2023 the Department of Veterans’ Affairs will deliver a televised service to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial on Anzac Parade,Canberra.

The Maleny RSL is commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the cessation of hostilities in Vietnam with a special service on the 18th August at the RSL commencing at 1100.

Lest we forget!

Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range supporting “Speak Up Now”

The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range continues to support the “Speak Up Now” initiative.

Val France and Sherryl Gregory were the guest speakers at the July dinner meeting held at the Maleny Hotel. Both representatives of “Speak Up Now” addressed the various aspects of Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse and provided club members with copies of the resources they have produced to help educate the Maleny and Surrounds community. These resources explain in simple terms how to identify these issues and contact details for the many organisations who can help people in need.

As part of the “Speak Up Now” initiative, Val and Sherryl are collecting old mobile phones. These phones are cleared by IT experts and then distributed as Safe Phones to people who are victims of abuse so they have a safe phone, that is not tracked by the abuser, to contact family and friends. This Safe Phone enables communication which is critical for ongoing safety and support.

The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range has provided financial support to the Speak Up Now group, as well as assisting with catering at educational seminars and will continue to assist this fantastic initiative to help deal with the growing Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse affecting our community.

Maleny Visitors Information Centre AGM

The Maleny Visitors Information Centre will be holding their AGM in the Verandah Room, Maleny Community Centre on Monday 14th August 2023 starting at 9a.m. Guest speaker on the morning will be Spencer Shaw from Brush Turkey Enterprises of Coral Street, Maleny. Maleny Golf Club Weekly Wrap

Golfers dream of scoring a hole in one, but imagine Amie Flanagan’s elation when she scored, not one but, two Aces during an Apex Charity Day event last Sunday at the Maleny Golf Club.

Having holed out on the Par 3 17th – a green most players struggle to even hold – Amie stepped onto the Tee of the even more difficult Par 3 1st hole just a few minutes later still buzzing and brimming with confidence.

“I’d jokingly said to the boys on my team, ‘Stuff it I’m gonna (sic) get another one’ as we were driving down to the 1st,” she chuckled. “I didn’t actually think it was going to happen, and we couldn’t believe it when my ball landed just in-front of the pin and rolled straight into the hole!”

The group’s screams of astonishment and jubilation could be heard from the clubhouse when what’s been estimated as a 67 million-to-one shot found

the game of golf about two years ago during the pandemic.

However, she now has three Aces to her name, having already scored a hole-in-one in May this year.

Maleny Golf Club General Manager Stephen Porter said Amie’s golfing feat would go down in the club’s annals as a feat unlikely to be ever be repeated. “Not too long ago we had a husband and wife both score Aces during the same round, so you never know,” he quipped.

Mr Porter said Maleny was popular as a Charity Golf Day venue for service clubs like Apex which held the event to raise funds to support local athlete Kael Thompson in her pursuit to represent Australia at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

News from the Rotary Club of Maleny

The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program, also known as RYDA is a road safety program designed to reduce the trauma on our roads by encouraging high school students aged between 16 and 18 years to take a more responsible attitude to motoring.

The program happened again this year for our Maleny State High School Students in Year 10. These young people will soon be obtaining their Learners Permits so it’s vital to educate them on road safety and how to speak up if they’re a passenger in a car.

students and are led by a team of trained facilitators including Police, driving instructors and other community sector specialists.

This is now a yearly event on the calendar and the day is spent at Corbould Park in Caloundra. Four members from our Rotary Club were there to assist as group leaders on the day and even we learned some interesting facts. It goes to prove you can always learn something!

Thanks for Sherryl Gregory, Fran Tickle, Paulette Steele and Greg Williams.

RYDA provides students with the tools, habits and motivation to take action and stay safe on our roads as both drivers and passengers throughout their lives.

RYDA features a highly engaging and memorable one-day workshop that front-loads students’ understanding of road safety. The workshop sessions are designed to be held in small classroom-sized groups of approximately 25

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

There was some spirited play on the lawns this week. Donna Manning enjoyed good play against Chris Borlase in preparation for her tilt at the Queensland Womens on the weekend of the 5th and 6th. She ended up slightly ahead in an encounter with interesting strategies 23 –21.

Chris was still recovering from his weekend at Wynnum club where he participated in the CAQ Men’s championship. He had to do extremely well against Greg Bury to win it ahead of Greg and made a pretty good fist of it to win their individual game but not by enough to win the tournament. The attached photo shows Chris attempting a stage in a triple peel in his preparation for the Men’s.

That same Thursday Dianne Horsman played a singles hand against the combined might of Helen Andrews and Lynette Evans. It was a cliff hanger with Dianne going down 13 – 14. What are the odds of exactly the same score line occurring just three days later on the Sunday with Stuart Craig and
