Get ready for Knit-Fest 2023!

Knit-fest is an free exciting 3 day Yarn & Fibre Arts Fair, held between July 1st and 3rd, 2023, celebrating fibre arts and crafts, embracing the whole community of Maleny. Malenyites can yarnbomb and decorate Maleny so the town becomes a centre of art, creativity, yarnbombing, workshops, music, trade stalls and craft markets.

It is a magical festival for families to discover new skills, talents and creativity using fibre arts including knitting, crochet, basket weaving, spinning and weaving, felting and lots more.

The theme for 2023 is “Wild Women” and will be held in conjunction with the Maleny RSL, The Flexi School and Maleny and Conondale state schools and the River school.

Knit-fest features competitions for community groups, art associations and skilled artisans to decorate trees in our beautiful streetscapes with handmade art installations made of yarn and fibre. There are also several smaller competitions for the Best Beanie, Scarf, Shawls, Tea Cosy etc. There’s great prizes too!.

Organiser, Deb Swain said that this could be the final year for Knit-fest because of the ever increasing cost of public liability insurance and other costs.

The importance of Junior Sport for our younger family members

The Maleny community is very fortunate to have a wide range of sporting activities for juniors. Sporting clubs go out of their way to welcome junior sportspeople.

With juvenile crime throughout Australia out of control, maybe a solution is to ensure our junior family members become involved in sport at an early age to ensure that they have interests in healthy and fun activities.

In terms of involvement and player numbers, football is the most popular team sport with kids under the age of 13 with basketball and cricket following closely.

Participation in junior sports is essential for the development of children and young people. Here are some of the reasons why junior sports are important:

1. Physical Health: Junior sports promote physical health by encouraging children to engage in regular exercise. This can help to prevent obesity and other health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

2. Social Development: Junior sports provide children with opportunities to interact with their peers and develop social skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership.

3. Emotional Development: Junior sports can help children develop emotional resilience by teaching them how to cope with success and failure, and how to deal with challenges.

4. Mental Health: Participation in junior sports can also have a positive impact on mental health, as it can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

5. Skill Development: Junior sports provide children with opportunities to develop their physical abilities and improve their skills in a particular sport.

6. Long-term Benefits: Junior sports can provide long-term benefits by encouraging children to lead an active lifestyle and develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Overall, junior sports are important for the physical, social, emotional, and mental development of children and young people. They provide opportunities for learning, growth, and personal development, and can help to promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

To assist with costs, in Queensland parents, carers or guardians can apply for a voucher valued up to $150 for their child, which can be used towards membership, registration or participation fees with registered activity providers. To find out more about these vouchers visit: https://www.qld.gov.au/recreation/sports/funding/ fairplay/apply.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Play days:

Exciting times have been enjoyed on our lawns this past week. On Thursday 4th May, Ricochet Pennants were played against Coolum. What a nail biting time! Congratulations to Sarah Widin for her healthy win against Bill Habner in one of the singles matches. In the other singles match, Lynette Evans played George Oliver in a very close run match, played to golden point which George won. In the doubles match, Sarah and Vince Carbery teamed up against George and Bill. Again, the match went to golden point with Bill and George winning again. Congratulations to all on a great day of exciting play.

In our club match ups on the afternoon of Thursday 4th, Donna Manning played our visitor, the very experience player Chris Borlase, in a great match up, which Chris won 24:8. We appreciate having such high level players visit our club as playing against them gives us a wider opportunity to hone our skills.

Meanwhile Wallace Roy bravely took on the might of a team of Helen Andrews and Sally Adams, easily winning with 19 hoops to 6.

On Sunday afternoon May 7, the beautiful Autumn weather drew many players to the lawns and both courts were in use. On lawn one, a doubles match between a team of Sally Adams and Wallace Roy against Helen Andrews and Kath Smith resulted in a very close game, won by Sally and Wallce with 11 hoops to 10. On lawn 2, Dianne Horsman played Nick Cram in a singles match, with Dianne going down with 4 hoops to Nick’s 17. Great play Nick! Also on lawn 2, Sarah Widin played against a team of Donna Manning and Lynette Evans which was won by Donna and Lynette 14:11.

PHOTO LEFT The pleasant afternoon was rounded off with a very congenial drink at the end of play.

The attached photo shows Wallace, Kath and Sally with drinks in hand and Lynette and Dianne hamming it up in the background. It must be the joys of Autumn!!

We’re excited to be adding Tuesday mornings to our play schedule at the club
