The Travelling Artillery Piece

M

aleny's 5th Light Horse Regiment Members are often asked by curious visitors about the artillery piece that is proudly on display outside their Beersheba Museum. Of course, there is a good story about how it was discovered, restored, transported between two towns and back again, all thanks to a combined Light Horse, Army, Service Club, business and community group effort. The story began in 2002, when, after a ve-year search for a gun by Maleny’s rst 5th Light Horse Museum, then located upstairs at the Maleny RSL, found the WWII Howitzer 25 pound artillery piece. It was retrieved from a paddock at the Wallangarra Ammunition Depot in SW Queensland, where it had languished for 25 years. Made in Australia in 1941, the gun was the 5th gun in the 2nd battery of the 4th Field Regiment.

The 25-pounder was one of the most satisfactory eld guns used by British and Commonwealth armies during the Second World War. The 25-pounder remained the standard gun in Australian eld artillery regiments until replaced in the early 1960s by the American built M2A2 105mm Howitzer. The then curator of Maleny’s original 5th Light Horse Museum, Bob McMillan-Kay, and the RSL’s Chris Brooker, collected the gun from the paddock. The good community of Maleny then set about the restoration process with local businesses, service clubs and tradesmen offering their goods and labour for free. Thank you Rotary Maleny for the Key to Maleny

In last week’s news, we incorrectly reported that the presentation of a “Key to Maleny” made to Rob and Sam Outridge was by the Maleny Lions Club. It was in fact an initiative of the Maleny Rotary Club, who hosted the event and had the “Key”produced by master carver, David Southern, from the Blackall Range Woodies. Councillor Johnston was asked by the Rotary Club to make the presentation on behalf of their Club and the Maleny community. We sincerely apologise for this error in reporting.

The Travelling Artillery Piece

Monday, 8 August 2022

(Continued from Page 1)

On November 1st 2002, the restored gun was secured into its new position outside the 5th Light Horse Museum at the RSL Hall, by Bob McMillan-Kay, Chris Brooker, Frank Beattie, and Ray Summersby, on a slab poured by local tradies. In 2008, it was transported from Maleny to Maryborough by museum curator Bob, when the Museum in the RSL Hall closed. And today, it's back in Maleny – at the new 5th Light Horse Beersheba Living Museum, thanks to the efforts of the Maleny regiment's Troop Commander, Rob Werry. After almost a decade collecting dust in a Maryborough garage, in 2017, Robert McMillan-Kay donated the 25 pound eld gun back to its new Maleny museum. Troop Commander Rob Werry then Rob spent many months communicating with the Army,

sourcing replacement tyres, with the Maleny RSL, Chris Brooker and many others to get the heavy gun to his Regiment's new museum. Once again, Clayton’s Towing delivered it free of charge to the Beersheba Museum and once more, locals were involved in the process. After initial delivery, David Lowden’s Tree Services collected it and undertook some much-needed welding and painting, then poured a new slab for it outside the museum.

So now you know, this is the same artillery piece that once graced the lawns outside the Maleny RSL from 2002 until 2008 and has returned again, hopefully, to remain!

A Sad Month for the Entertainment World August 2022 is a sad month for most Australians as they learnt of the death of two icons of the Australian Entertainment industry. Unfortunately, within a couple of days of each other it was learnt that Judith Durham OAM, formerly of the Australian Folk Group “The Seekers” and Dame Olivia Newton-John star of Grease had both passed away after long illnesses.

The antique armament is now on permanent display at the Beersheba Living Museum on the Maleny Community Precinct, helping in showcasing the history of the 5th Light Horse Regiment. Bob McMillan-Kay said in 2017 that it was sad to see the display go after 9 years in his care “But I’m not able to display it here in Maryborough, so I’m giving it to a good cause”.

R.I.P. Both. Both will be missed.

Maleny Credit Union to Become a Charity

At a meeting held on Wednesday, July 27, MCU members voted in the majority to formally change the purpose of Maleny Credit Union Ltd to become a charity. A resolution was passed at the meeting to transfer its assets to a new structure. The new MCU Communities Ltd will also incorporate the closure of the Maleny and District Credit Union Charitable Trust, which in 2021 distributed $149,000 in grants, mostly to local community organisations and clubs. MCU Ltd Chair, Darryl Ebenezer, said the meeting was well attended, given the challenges of the recent Covid resurgence.“ The move to a charity means that MCU Communities Ltd can continue to have a broad impact on the social, environmental and economic cross-over of our region, and enable us to continue the legacy of the charity in a different way,” said Mr Ebenezer.“

https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News

The transfer provides certainty for members and community to keep an important asset in Bunya House, and continue the distribution of grants to local community organisations.”

Witta Tennis Friday 29 July: Whistlers played at Ballinger, against Meteors. Nice weather for tennis, and good to be on the court. We had lots of rallies and close games, but couldn't get the last points. Score was 3-5 sets, 25-38 games. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Maree Hooley and Cindy Harris. The Wanderers are having a strange start to their season with forfeits, washouts, illness and now a bye. Hopefully they’ll be playing soon. Sunday 31 July: The Witta Club Tournament was another great success with 12 combatants. As usual it was a very close nish with Paula Cudmore scoring the most points and Mal Wright close behind in 2nd place. Thanks to everyone and special thanks to Claire and Denis Hickey for their incredible chief skills. Friday 5 August: Whistlers played at Maroochydore, against the Bluebells. Sun was out and it was a nice and warm day. Bit of wind moved the balls around far too much. It made us run a bit extra. It was a good day for us in the end. Score was 43-24 games, 7-1 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Maree Hooley, Aki Lepper and Donna Kuskopf.

Where’s Sam, the Travelling Jackeroo?

Monday, 8 August 2022

He’s back with The Great Moscow Circus, out there in Rockingham WA. From his latest blog posting, here is Sam’s news. Now for everyone asking why I’m travelling with them (The Great Moscow Circus) for a while it’s because of this: I shake my tins at each of their shows. On average each show raises about $150-$200 for my charities, thanks to the amount of people that come to see the circus, 7 shows a week on average equals between $1050- $1400 raised for my charities weekly, and sometimes it’s even more (most one show's raised so far was $750).

Add to this that it gives people the opportunity to come say “G’day" and to see me at a xed location, people don’t have to chase after me! Plus power and water and an awesome group of people from right around the world - and you get an amazing little community that’s very family oriented and helpful. To donate to the Royal Flying Doctor Service visit: https://rfds-qld.giveeasy.org/the-travellingjackaroo One minute I’m shaking my tins in the tent, next second when the show's on I’m running around helping unload boxes from semis, re-stocking the canteen from the stock truck and helping out any way I can. Raising lots for the cause, good mates and still travelling? It’s awesome! Follow Sam’s adventures at: https://www.facebook.com/ thetravellingjackaroo

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny We almost had the lawns to ourselves on Thursday 4th . The only visitor, John Reid, teamed up with Sarah Widin to soundly defeat Kath Smith and Sally Adams 19 – 2. Wallace Roy played well to overcome Lynette Evans 7 – 0. Sometimes games just become dif cult to get into. This was the case with Lynette, who had dif culty making hoop 1. Ken Barker arrived late to play against Donna Manning who was keen for some match practice. She was to play in the Queensland Association Women’s Singles on the 6th and the 7th at Toombul. Reports from that event are that she played well. Her shortened game against Ken was a strategic and tactical exercise where no scores were recorded. On Sunday 7th Sarah pegged out against Lynette with an impressive peel of rover. Vince Carbery and Nick Cram made the mistake of emphasizing the “boys v girls” aspect of their doubles game against Val Carbery and Kath. Big mistake ... the girls won 18 – 11. Don’t try to twist the tiger’s tail when you’re on its back.

The attached photo from a couple of weeks ago illustrates good forward play. Ted Singleton is about to roquet black with his red ball. He will approach hoop 9 (3 back in the old terminology) then have black waiting behind 9 and use it to progress to blue, seen, in the distance, a pioneer at hoop 10. Ted makes the game look easy. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15.
