Bridge 2 Brisbane 2021! ….Done and Dusted!

Maleny locals Jared Ashcroft, Olin Stratford and Chris Maylor successfully completed the popular Bridge to Brisbane charity running/walking event on Sunday, their efforts raising funds for the charity of their choice - Beyond Blue. Bridge To Brisbane is a unique event, whereby participants start at the base of the Gateway Bridge, Murarrie, running or walking the 10km route that eventually takes them over the iconic Gateway Bridge, descending down to the nish line at Brisbane's iconic Brisbane Showgrounds.

The lads completed the 10 km walk in 2:20.04, each proud of their personal achievement, whilst also raising $4,300 so far. What is so special about this event is that each participant chooses which charity they will be raising funds for. As Jared noted ” Whilst I may look like the happy chap around town, I do suffer from mental health issues from time to time, like so many, and the support of friends, family and this community means everything and has enabled me to take part in this event again”. The lads are hoping to reach the $5,000 mark, and there is still time to donate, with further donations accepted until the 30th November at this secure link: https://bridgetobrisbane.gofundraise.com.au/.../Jared...

Three million Australians are living with anxiety or depression. Beyond Blue provides information and support to help everyone in Australia achieve their best possible mental health, whatever their age and wherever they live. You can check out their tremendous work at their website: https://www.beyondblue.org.au/

If your club or organisation is an associate member of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club then you can publicise your club results and news in this, our “Community Billboard”.

Our theme this Saturday 13th November will be for anyone who has bought a telescope and cannot make them work, and people wanting to buy a telescope – but don’t know which one to purchase. We will also be doing a laser guided tour of the night sky and viewing the Moon, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. With a fairly bright Moon, it will be a relatively easy night to get around. If you are bringing your own scope, it will need to be set up as far as you can go, by no later than 5 pm, giving us an hour to x and advise. At six we will do a chat about different sorts of telescopes for aspiring buyers.

Keep your events diary up to date on the MDSARC Inc Web site so that we all know about your communities important events.

If that theme isn’t for you, then be there by sunset at 6:13 pm for a laser show to start around 6:45 pm, followed by telescope viewing, and telescope running if you want to take charge! No knowledge or equipment is necessary, just bring your curiosity. All ages and ability are welcome, but sorry no pets as they are a tripping hazard in the night.

This is your newsletter - let all of Maleny know the latest info from your club every week! All articles, results, posters and photos (as large sized jpegs, please do not embed these in a Word doc) for inclusion in the weekly sports results should be emailed to

Donations are appreciated but not compulsory – we suggest $5 per person or $10 per family (all proceeds go to expenses incurred running these nights). Members of the Brisbane Astronomical Society and/or the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance are free entry. As the events are always weather dependent, please watch the weather update on our Sunshine Coast Astronomy Facebook page on Friday night at: https://www.facebook.com/SunshineCoastAstronomyQLD Please bring hand sanitiser and there will be COVID sign in when you arrive. BYO food and drink (no alcohol). A COVID requirement is that you need to wear glasses or safety glasses but we will have some on sale on the evening if you don’t have any.

The Maleny Provisional School – then and now

The Witta State School actually opened as the Maleny Provisional School on 3rd October 1892. The rst head teacher was Mr JW Thiedecke, who opened the school with the roll call for the rst time with the following children: Adel Vandrieke Emily and Max Manitsky Martha Thiedecke Elizabeth, Augusta and Christine Sommer

anniversaries, family reunions, workshops, concerts, exhibitions and small country weddings. The Witta Market is held in the grounds on the third Saturday of each month from 7.30am-12.00 noon. You can get in touch for all enquiries by calling 5494 4366 or visiting http://oldwittaschool.edublogs.org/

Photo: There were 17 “ rst day” pupils enrolled in 1882, here with Mr J.W. Thiedecke the rst head teacher.

Charles Bergann August and Charlie Flesser In January 1893 the name was changed to the Teutoberg Provisional School and then to Teutoberg State School in January 1909. It nally became the Witta State School In 1916.

The rst building was made of pit-sawn logs, built by Messrs. Bergann and F. Vendrieke, with a hand-split shingle roof. The building also doubled as the Post Of ce, with the mail brought up from Landsborough by packhorse on a weekly basis. In 1974, student numbers had dwindled to 7, so the school was closed and the remaining students were bussed into the Maleny State School. 696 students were enrolled at the school during the 82 years that the school was open. The school has been retained and today the building, set in ve acres of beautiful parkland just seven kilometres from the town of Maleny, is used as an education and community facility, with a community based committee looking after the property in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Council. The Old Witta School Community Centre is these days available for hire for children’s parties,

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Our club hosted its annual November Tournament from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th November. Players came from far and wide to play in Divisions 1 through 4 in a great competition. Division 1, played on Thursday 4th was won by Donna Manning, winning all three of her games, the most exciting being the last against Kathie Grant from Southport who was the runner up. The attached photo below shows Donna being presented with the shield by Sarah Widin, club president. Division 2, played on Friday 5th was a closely fought competition with many players from the region and further a eld. Nick Cram had a good game in which he came within a whisker of pegging out. Bill Habner, from Nambour, the eventual runner up, had an excellent game where he went one better and pegged out against Murray Tinker from Caloundra. Unfortunately, Bill couldn’t reproduce this form in the nal against Wade Hart from Eildon. Wade played well to contain him, winning the game by a large margin, and the event. Division 3, played on Saturday 6th was won by Lesley Johnstone from Headland Buderim narrowly ahead of her clubmate and 2020 winner of this event, Diane Horsham. Their individual game was tied after extra time which meant that the game was won by the rst player to score a hoop after that … nail biting stuff!

Division 4, played on Sunday 7th was a close tussle between Roy Pemberton from Bundaberg club and Lynette Evans. Both players won two games, but Lynette took rst on a countback. Congratulations to all players on the good sportsmanship displayed through the tournament. All of cials, referees and scorers were impressed with their attitude to the game. Many thanks to all club members, referees, of cials, and helpers – especially the person, who bought the delicious watermelon. We would also like to thank our major sponsor Munro Thompson for their generous support. Start times on play days, Thursday, and Sunday, have changed because of hotter weather. They are now 2.00 for 2.30 p.m. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am. Did you know that Wimbledon was originally a croquet club. The "All England Croquet Club" was founded in Wimbledon in 1868.
