Seriously

It could be a matter of life or death!

If your club or organisation is an associate member of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club then you can publicise your club results and news in this, our “Community Billboard”.

Queensland police and the Department of Child Safety were monitoring the pair in hotel quarantine on the Sunshine Coast after they breached the state's border controls and travelled to Noosa on August 7th. They were found at the Noosa Civic Shopping Centre.

Keep your events diary up to date on the MDSARC Inc Web site so that we all know about your communities important events.

They are just a couple of a number of people who are putting the health of everyday Queenslanders at risk. Yes that includes you and I.

This is your newsletter - let all of Maleny know the latest info from your club every week! All articles, results, posters and photos (as large sized jpegs, please do not embed these in a Word doc) for inclusion in the weekly sports results should be emailed to denvergail1@gmail.com no later than 12 noon every Monday.

The two individuals broke the rules by travelling to Melbourne and back to the southern suburbs, risking Queenslanders' lives. The two girls came through the border point without being honest.

Whilst Queenslanders can stay freely with friends or family, go camping, stay in a caravan park, hotel or an Airbnb within Queensland, people are strongly encouraged to stay 1.5 metres away from other people as much as possible, wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitiser often, and leave a location if it is crowded. Symptoms may include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath, loss of smell or taste, and fatigue. Whilst community members are urged not to panic we should all be cautious about what we do and we should follow the simple important message: Feeling sick? Stay home. Get tested. This will help us all remain well and be able to get back to normal living, if that is ever possible again in the shortest possible time. Please take COVID-19 seriously and stay safe and well!

End of WW11 in the Pacific - 75 years

Monday, 10 August 2020

How true is this? Is it an age thing or what?

This year is the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific (VP Day), the definitive end of World War II. When the war in the Pacific ended on August 15, 1945, Australians went wild with joy. This date is the day on which the initial announcement of Japan's surrender was made just after midday by Japan’s Emperor Hirohito. Victory in the Pacific Day – was celebrated across the country with street parties and parades. But the day was also marked with sorrow for the tens of thousands of Australians killed or injured. On September 2, 1945, a formal surrender ceremony was performed in Tokyo Bay, Japan, aboard the battleship USS Missouri. We should all take a minute to give thanks who fought for our freedoms!

Always Needed by the Community A story by Mrs Peg Burnett As Seniors Week begins, this week we take a look at the important role played in the history of our beloved Maleny Library by one of Maleny’s great ladies, Mrs Peg Burnett. Maleny Library is named after Peg Burnett. Among the many voluntary positions she held in the Maleny community during her lifetime, ensuring that the Maleny community had only the best library facilities available was her passion. Peg's mother and a friend had been instrumental in establishing Maleny's first library, applying to the School of Arts headquarters for assistance. This original library was in the annex of the Maleny School of Arts Hall in Maple St. Peg was the librarian at the Maleny School of Arts Library until 1978 and continued to assist on the Mobile Library. The Peg Burnett Library was officially opened on 1 May, 1998 and named in recognition of her long association with the library services in Maleny. The following is an article Peg wrote about her recollections.

“When the first Hall - The Community Centre - was built in 1908 and rebuilt in 1913, a room in the front of the building was set aside as a Meeting Place.

married in 1931.

As well as the local sporting bodies and charities using the room, music, speech and dancing along with the Maleny Literary and Debating Society all used this room. About 1916 Mrs Jack (Grigor) and my mother Mrs Andy McLean (both ex school teachers) realised that Maleny needed a library. They were both members of the Hall Committee, so had no trouble in persuading the rest of the committee of the need. As the Hall had been built under the umbrella of The School Of Arts, they applied to the headquarters in Ann Street Brisbane for some help in stocking a library. A nucleus of a library was supplied by the School of Arts and further books bought by the local committee. Mrs (Grigor) and Mrs McLean manned the library for a few years, then, when fairly established, Miss Betty Blacklaw was appointed as a paid librarian and managed the library until she

I applied for the job and was successful, so went to Brisbane to the Ann Street Library for some training for about three months. I opened the library on Tuesday 2pm-5pm, Friday 10am-3pm, and Saturday nights from 7-8pm before the pictures began. I was paid 7/6 per week. Previously, Betty had used a card system, but we introduced a ledger system which was considered to be more efficient. Readers paid a yearly subscription and books were free. We bought our books directly from the publishers - Hodder & Stoughton, Heineman and Collins mainly - in England, and from Dymocks in Sydney when on sale. I resigned from the library when I married (married women didn’t work then) and several other Continued next Page

Always Needed by the Community A story by Mrs Peg Burnett (Cont from Prev Page) librarians carried on until a fire gutted the building in 1958. A couple of hundred books were saved and when the hall was rebuilt the committee asked that I re-establish the library. We dusted off the old books and appealed for donations of books to get the library up and running. I might add that we got heaps of Readers Digest and Book Club books, but all were very welcome. We charged sixpence as a book borrowing fee, and that money was used to purchase further books. We built up a reasonable collection, but there was not enough money for non-fiction works. Meanwhile, the Landsborough (now the Caloundra) City Council moved towards establishing a library in Caloundra. They previously had a School Of Arts Library, as we did. At this time the Library Board of Queensland was interested in establishing mobile libraries to service country people so a Regional Mobile Library was established servicing the Caloundra, Noosa and Maroochy shires, with headquarters in Caloundra. The library bus was purchased and stocked, and took to the road with Jim O’Hara as Driver/Librarian. He was soon everybody’s friend and we were all sorry to lose him when he retired. The books from the Maleny Library were purchased by the Board for $1,100 - the money going back into our Hall funds. As Maleny’s population mushroomed the need for a State Library with all modern amenities found in today’s libraries was vital so the Caloundra Council moved to that end. The old Fruit Barn was purchased and it was converted into our beautiful library. The library is also a meeting place and helps to fill that gap in our village life. The Maleny library, being situated on the tranquil bank of the Obi Creek and tucked in on one side by Apex Park ensures that the Library remains a favourite reading place. Its facilities not only provide recreation reading material for the hinterland community but important resources for people studying." Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Inc
