Tom Malone – a lifetime of volunteering!
On September 12th, Tom Malone celebrated his 93rd birthday - proof that when it comes to volunteering and helping out the community, age really is no barrier. Tom - who is not one to boast – says volunteering and being involved in the community is just part of who he is. And he has been continually volunteering for close to 75 years. “It has been a big part of my life and I’ve been lucky that throughout my life my work has allowed me time to be able to contribute to different projects in the area,” he said. One day shy of his 93rd birthday, yet another very special award was made to Tom. The award was an Associate Life Membership of the St Vincent de Paul Society, in recognition of his continued membership and support of the Society. Tom has been heavily involved with St Vincent de Paul Society over many years, was the regional chairman for a number of years, Regional President of Vinnies for a term and has worked hands-on for Vinnies for 15 years.
The award was presented by John Harrison at Our Lady of the Way Church at Landsborough on 11th September and the following day, the celebrations started in earnest!
For a large part of his life, Tom was also involved with the State Emergency Service (SES) and Rural Fire Brigade. He was pivotal in the establishment of the Maleny and District Rural Fire Brigade. Tom has since retired from those memberships but not
before making an impact through many rescues in the region.
In 1980, he was appointed fire warden for the Maleny district and held that position for almost 40 years. While he is no longer active in fighting fires, he still plays a part in the overall running of the volunteer fire brigade, which provides an invaluable service to the local region.
Over the years, Tom has been involved in a number of projects throughout the region, many of which continue to have a big impact in our local community.
Among his many contributions, Tom was heavily involved with Rotary establishing the caretaker’s residence at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and pivotal in setting up the Maleny Senior Citizens Club and local soccer club.

Maleny Streetscape update
I would like to thank the Maleny community for taking their time to provide valuable feedback on the Placemaking and Streetscape design for Maple Street by speaking with our project team and completing the Have Your Say survey, which closed on 15 August 2022. The project team are currently reviewing the survey data and will report the final design to the community later this year. Stay tuned!
Impact of Div 5 landslips
Recent weather events have caused landslips which have been assessed with many Division 5 roads now facing significant repairs. The impact of a series of major landslips caused by the February and May weather event has assessed the worst affected areas being Bald Knob, Wootha (west of Maleny), Glenview, Eudlo, Peachester, Montville and Towen Mountain. The landslide at Hovard Road, Bald Knob has closed off the thoroughfare, and I’m eager to see repair works start soon to help minimise the impact on Bald Knob residents and surrounding
communities. Design works have started for this job which will be a vastly complex construction project which is estimated to cost $5 million and one that is unlikely to be completed until 2024. We are liaising with the affected local residents, and we are providing as much information as we can to keep the community informed throughout the construction works.
Mary Cairncross
I am happy to advise construction on the Mary Cairncross Track Renewal will start early October. The works will include the continuation of the boardwalk decking for a total of 300 metres which will improve our visitor experience to the scenic reserve and address erosion impacts, sediment runoff into the creek, and maintain access within the reserve during prolonged rain events.

Swimming Pool Model “Broken”
by Jennifer Kent(We sincerely thank Glasshouse Country and Maleny News for providing this update to the community on on what’s happening poolside).
A swimming pool model that has seen both Maleny and Mooloolah Valley pools shut to the public for summer must be fixed, State Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell, said. Both pools are owned by the Department of Education and are built on school grounds.
Because of this the pools can only be used by the public outside of school hours and only if operated by a qualified manager. To further complicate matters the management role is seasonal, meaning there is only work during the warmer months.
With parliament returned, Mr Powell shared he would be reaching out to the Minister of Education to discuss what alternatives the department can bring to the table to allow these pools to open once more to the public.
“While we’re on different sides of politics, we have a respectful understanding when it comes to education and our schools,” Mr Powell said. “What we need is innovative and community-minded solutions.
Conondale has a pool, Kenilworth has a pool, Palmwoods has a pool, Beerwah has a pool… why can’t Maleny and Mooloolah?”
Both pool committees were unable to find a suitable manager for the upcoming season. For Maleny locals it will be the third summer in a row without access to a local pool.
Mr. Powell said he shared the communities’ frustration and was seeking a meeting with the Education Minister, Grace Grace, to find a practical solution.
“Historically, Queensland has only had a small number of pools located on school grounds,” Mr Powell said. "My understanding is less than a dozen, and we happen to have two of them in our region. Both pools were close to opening, however unfortunately things have fallen through. We need to find a solution.”
Maple Street Co-Op AGM

GC&M News contacted the Department of Education for comment, with a spokesperson saying the department’s facilities are able to be used by the community, provided it is not being used by the school, they did not say what assistance the department can provide in securing appropriate pool managers or whether the current model was working.
“The department will work closely with schools to maximise community use opportunities where available,” a spokesperson said.

Conondale Classic Weekend
Conondale’s Green Park will see a weekend of bike racing on October 14th to 16th. The weekend, Ballard’s Off Road Classic is presented by Rat Racing. Australia’s off road racing legend Geoff Ballard; a man whose five-decade relationship with motorcycles borders on obsession will be attending. Geoff Ballard’s (known as GB) riding career started back in 1972. By 1979 Geoff was based in Europe, and through a combination of Enduro and MX events plus some stunt shows, he scraped together a living before eventually crossing the Atlantic in 1984 to take on the Yanks.
This Conondale Classics weekend has something for everyone with its noncompetitive vintage bike event. There is an open invitation for vintage bike riders and owners to get involved in the weekend activities which include riding workshops, sponsor activities, a vintage bike display and a trade show.
The traditional Shannons “Show and Shine” parade will happen between 12m.d. and 1p.m. on the Saturday. There will also be live music. There is also plenty of onsite camping, showers, coffee, food and a bar.
There will also be a raffle for a vintage dirt bike, a 1990 RM250 motorcycle.
Witta Tennis News
DATE CLAIMER: Witta Tennis AGM is on Saturday 12th November commencing at 12:30 at The Shed.
Friday 7 October: The Whistlers played at Witta against Maroochydore Bluebells. After the school holiday break, we were happy to be back on the court. Good tennis as usual, and enjoyed catching up, and we had a good win. Score was 8-0 sets, 48-12 games. Team was Maree Hooley, Paula Cudmore, Aki Lepper and Cindy Harris.
Sunday 9 October: After a wet drive to Gympie the Witta Wompoos team of Sean Lepper, Haydyn Craven, Tony Keenan, Andrew Blowes, Donna Kuskoph and Paula Cudmore faced a competitive Gympie team ready to secure a good win for their last match of the season.
Sets were closely contested with it all square 4 sets each after the ladies’ doubles. Sets then alternated through some strong men’s doubles wins for Tony and Sean and Haydyn and Sean giving Witta Wompoos a slight lead.
With two sets to play the sets were even at 5 all. A good win by Tony and Donna gave the team a lead going into the last match. A tight set which oscillated between the pairs gave the Gympie team the last set to make the result go down to the wire. Witta Wompoos was successful, winning by 7 games.
Thanks to all our players through the season, Malcolm Carlisle, Craig Hooper, Brenda Warner, Annie Quarmby , Jim Cudmore and wonderful fill-ins we called on to get a competitive team for each match. We hope to also see our friends John Poole and Anthony De Waard returning from injury next year.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny
It seems like everyone is making the most of the finer weather before the forecast rains hit!
Thursday 6th October was a busy afternoon on our lawns with eight players turning up for Association Croquet. We had two very close run doubles matches. Dianne Horsman and Helen Andrews narrowly defeated Wallace Roy and Kath Smith with a score of 9 hoops to 8. Meanwhile, Donna Manning and Sarah Widin took on Ken Barker and Nick Carm, resulting in Donna and Sarah coming out victorious with a score of 15:13.
Sunday 9th October also saw our play afternoon well attended. In a doubles match, Donna Manning and Helen Andrews played Kath Smith and Stuart Craig with Donna and Helen narrowly winning with 12 hoops to Kath and Stuart’s 11. Meanwhile, there were two singles matches played.
Lynette Evans took her keenly anticipated revenge on Wallace Roy (following Wallace’s brutally resounding win against Lynette last week) to come out victorious with 10 hoops to Wallace’s 5. The other singles match up saw Dianne Horsman play Sarah Widin, with Dianne coming out ahead with 12 hoops to 10. Great play everyone!
