Roll Back the Clock at Maleny Bowls Club!

Maleny Bowls Club is taking a step towards curbing low physical activity rates among older Australians by encouraging them to "Roll Back the Clock" through lawn bowls.

"Roll Back the Clock" is a Bowls Australia initiative, in partnership with Sport Australia, that aims to boost physical activity rates among Australians aged 65 and over through bowls, light exercise and education. Presently, as few as 25-percent of Australians over-65 meet the Department of Health's physical activity guidelines of 30 minutes of activity per day. Health-related reasons, including physical and mental health, are the main barriers for older Australians participating in sport or physical activities and bowls is seen as a low-impact,

Roll Back The Clock programs incorporate a two-part activity lasting 30 minutes each, targeting both the body and mind through bowls, functional training, tness and wellness education, and socialisation. Sessions are adapted for individuals, with bene ts ranging from enabling participants to perform activities of daily life more easily, to withstanding injuries and providing a sense of accomplishment and achievement. In addition to the physical health bene ts, engaging in physical activity and group sports for older Australians provides increasingly important opportunities for socialisation, peer-support, and conversation that reduces the possibility for loneliness related physical and mental illnesses. A new 8-week program open to the public commences at Maleny Bowls Club from Wednesday, 27 July 2022. The program will run from 2:00pm-3:00pm on Wednesdays and combines exercise, wellness education, socialisation and little bit of bowls. For more information about the program including videos of activities and to complete registration please visit our website http://malenybowlsclub.com.au/roll-back-the-clock/

socially-inclusive activity that can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages.

“Thank You”

From the Woodies!

“The Woodies Wonderful Weekend of Wood" was a huge success” said event co-ordinator and Vice President Julie Breen. It was held on the 30 April and 1 May at the Blackall Range Woodworkers Guild (also known as the Montville Woodies) headquarters at 230 -238 Balmoral Road Montville, and was very well attended by huge crowds. “People came from all over southeast Queensland to enjoy the varied activities on display, and no-one was disappointed”, according to Woodies President Max Barrenger.

One of the popular attractions was the Miller’s Shed where the club’s millers showed how they handle the logs which are cut into slabs and then dried in accordance with a speci c procedure to reduce the moisture content to a certain level before being used for wood making by members. Slabs were on sale to members of the public and many took advantage to buy slabs. The millers elded enquiries about the various species of logs milled by them. “All logs are donated to the club which by members of the public who want to remove a tree from their properties for various reasons, so we are able to recycle the logs and also help the environment,” said President Max. The mill was designed and constructed by Woodies member John Holland. Box making, scroll-sawing, pyrography and other skills were on display as well as a huge and wonderful array of timber items made by members for sale on both days.

President Max and Vice-President and co-ordinator Julie expressed enthusiastic thanks to everyone involved in the Woodies Wonderful Weekend of Wood including the public, the media for excellent publicity, and Woodies members who assisted to make the event such a wonderful success. The Woodies plan to hold their annual Santa’s workshop prior to Christmas so members of the public can buy handcrafted wooden items which make excellent presents.

Along-established tradition by Guild members is "to make a range of children’s toys which are donated to the Salvation Army for distribution in their Christmas appeal.” You can contact the Woodies and learn more about them by visiting their website at: https://blackallrangewoodies.org.au/

Combined Probus Club of Maleny Inc Probus is an association of active retirees providing regular opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests and enjoy the fellowship of new friends. At our June meeting the guest speaker was a meteorologist who gave a very lively and interesting talk. He explained in layman’s terms how weather develops. His talk was followed by many interesting questions from the members. Three new members joined the club and an additional six have put in their application to join. Our planned trip to Stradbroke Island had to be cancelled due to extreme bad weather. The trip is now planned for later this year in November. Our next trip is to Pomona’s Majestic theatre to take us back to the Silent Movie Era followed by lunch at the Black Ant restaurant in Kin Kin. In the planning are a trip to Qld Parliament House and possibly an overnight to Toowoomba to attend the “Music of the Night – Andrew Lloyd-Webber” at the historic Empire Theatre. Our next speaker at the July meeting will be Mike Keane, an expert in aviation matters. He will give us his view on the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines MH370. If you are interested to come along as a visitor and hear him speak you are most welcome. Please let us know by sending an email to malenyprobus@gmail.com We always welcome new members. The Old School Bus

With the demise of Watsons Garage from our historical streetscape, we thought readers might enjoy this poem, written about earlier times on the school bus. The photo is of the Watson’s trucks parked outside 41 Maple St, opposite Cooke Park. The 2 cream/milk trucks on the left multi-tasked as school buses in the late 1940’s. Sunday 31 July is the NEW date for the tournament. Cost to play is $15pp which included morning tea and lunch. 8:30 start. For more information contact: paulinefraley@gmail.com. The Wikings hosted Nambas in the latest vets battle. With a mixed team of ladies playing as men and llins from other teams, we stood our ground and did not hold back. Out gunned throughout, it still went down to the wire, with Nambas victorious on the day. You know it is a fantastic day of tennis when everyone is in great spirits after ‘narrowly’ losing and can’t wait to get back out on the courts. Huge thanks to everyone who played. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm. All are welcome. The Witta Tennis Club is dedicated to providing a safe, pleasant and friendly environment for the whole community to enjoy tennis. The Old School Bus by Marilyn Martinuzzi (Ryan)

It was really a cream truck Masquerading as a school bus. Trundling off to the dairy farms at rst light, Delivering fresh cream to the factory Then the old Bedford transformed. Planks were thrown across the canopied back, And kids piled in, screaming and yabbering, Fighting over prize positions, Tucked up in the smoky driver’s cabin, room for only two kids, Or braced against the front boards of the back, Wind tangling hair into a twist of knots, And skirts billowing out. Woo-hoo! If you were lucky someone would save you a spot - until it was their stop. The old bus bolted and grunted over dusty red roads, Winding its way over picturesque hills, Gears grinding, brakes shuddering. Occasionally a hat would y off. There’d be a shout, Stop! Stop! Fists thumping on the cabin roof, And a little kid would run off down the road to retrieve it. Red dust would cloud in, Invading mouth and eyes, Sinking deep into your hair. Then the rain would come, and the cold, Canvas sides would quickly come down, dripping and apping about. Like a wet smelly sh. And we would huddle up, Damp but cocooned, In the old school bus.

Katya's Tennis Drills Katya's Tennis Drills Thrills and Fitness is on Friday Nights at 5:45pm. Cost is $20. Come along and join in the fun. All levels are welcome.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny We have welcomed the return of the sun, thankfully defying the Bureau of Meteorology which bleakly forecast rain for this past week. However, as with the rest of Maleny, we have shivered with the blustery, cold weather and for some players participation has been hampered by this.

the sun out, we warmed up. (Slightly!)

For our Thursday afternoon session on the 7th of July, four brave souls turned up to play and took part in singles matches. Sally Adams played against Kath Smith while Helen Andrews played Lynette Evans. There were friendly, relaxed games and scores were not recorded. It’s great to have the opportunity to play informally in this way, trying out variations in strategy and practicing skills.

At the same time, a doubles match took place in which Donna Manning and Lynette Evans challenged Val Carbery and Helen Andrews, coming up victorious with 11 hoops to Val and Helen’s 5.

Sunday afternoon the 10th was also a cold one and six intrepid players arrived ready to play. In a singles game, Nick Cram successfully took on Vince Carbery to win 17:11.

We’ll see what turn the weather takes in the coming week…. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am.

Our web address is: https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au For details contact Sarah Widin 0417640704 (President ) Did you know that croquet is played in over 30 countries around the world! There are in excess of 275 Clubs in Australia, 40 in Queensland, including one in Maleny.

Court Saturday morning the 9th saw only one learner brave enough to face the early morning chill for coaching. Helen Uhlmann found herself in the enviable position of having two coaches to herself, with Val and Vince Carbery offering their services. We practiced ways of setting up the lawn using drives, rolls and take-offs and had a practice game, with Helen and Val taking on Vince. Let’s just say that Helen bene tted greatly, being spoilt almost like the only child in the family, with many extra bisques and several “double takes” being allowed which enabled the scoring of more hoops than were deserved! Thanks to Vince and Val for braving the cold and being such good sports. It actually turned out to be a pleasant morning on the lawn. As the wind dropped and with
