Witta Handcraft Markets

Witta Tennis News

The Witta Tennis Club Tournament is on Sunday 25 June. The cost is $15 which includes lunch. Nominations close Sunday the 18 June.

Entries to: paulinefraley@gmail.com. Whistlers were pleased to come in 3rd place this season with some very tough opposition. In the semifinals played on Friday we played the team who came second - Mooloolah Magnets. Paula, Donna, Brenda & Maree tried their hardest - but were beaten by a better team on the day. 48 games to 18. Now we have a few weeks off from comp before Spring season commenced in July

Witta Wompoos battled it out against Gympie Silver on Sunday. Both teams enjoyed the new court surfaces and sets see-sawed throughout the day. No tiebreaks were called for, but the standard of tennis was exceptional from both teams.

After the ladies set the teams were tied with only a few games separating them. Mal Carlisle had an impressive run for the day winning all four of his sets, with Haydyn, Donna, and Andrew each winning two out of their four sets for the day.

Great results over a tough consistent team. Once again, the match came down to the last two mixed sets. With a win going to each of the teams. The only way to separate them to get a result was games count back which put Witta over the line by 3 games.

Thanks to the Gympie team for the exciting tennis and to Mal, Haydyn, Andrew, Jim Donna, and Paula on an excellent win.

Katya's Tennis Drills

Thrills and Fitness is on Friday Nights at 5:45pm. Cost is $20. Come along and join in the fun. All levels are welcome. Enquiries: 0437 295 501

Social tennis: Monday ladies 8am and Saturday mixed 1pm. All are welcome.

Court bookings 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

The Cork Twins

Twins, Aubrey (Aub) and Clarence (Bruiser) Cork were born 106 years ago in Maleny. Their parents, Clarence Aubrey and Martha Cork, moved to Maleny from Milton, NSW in 1914 and were farmers.

The lads went to school in Maleny and both remembered long holidays at Caloundra occasionally.

They took out a lease on Moffit’s property which had the milk run for the town attached, then a few years later the lease on Alan Mears property.

They were successful in their farming ventures and at their peak, owned three farms and kept two families employed.

Both were keen sportsman. The cricket oval at the Maleny Showgrounds is named the Aub Cork Oval.

Happy 106 Heavenly Birthday Aub and Bruiser. Enjoy two biographies from two families, Rob Cork and Pamela Tierney at:

Maleny Players Next Production!

We’re excited to be bringing you 'Dancing with Lughnasa' by Brian Friel- and Directed by Andrew Wallace. Dancing at Lughnasa is a 1990 play set in a cottage in County Donegal in 1936. It’s a household of five unmarried sisters who would all like to be married. The youngest has an illegitimate son, the eldest tries to keep preserve family respectability. But now the father of the child re-appears, full of seductive charm, while an elder brother has just returned after decades working as a priest in Africa and is strangely changed.

In the back hills there are still lingering pagan rituals, Lugh (pronounced ‘Loo’) being the ancient Celtic god of the harvest. The rhythms of family life play out against broader social tensions and economic hardship. You will enjoy meeting these fundamentally good-hearted and resilient people.

At Friday evening performances you are invited to come along at 6pm to purchase a bowl of Irish stew to enjoy whilst being entertained with music on the veranda at the Playhouse.

Please purchase your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to seeing you at the Playhouse.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

The stage was set for a six-ball game of ricochet croquet when three players arrived to play on Tuesday morning. Dianne Horseman, Sally Adams, and Stuart Craig negotiated the complexities of the variation to record respectable scores of 5, 4, and 5 hoops respectively. As in association croquet the tactics and strategy of the three-player game are considerably less well defined.

Old rivalries surfaced and new ones were formed on Thursday. Ken Barker played Nick Cram and, despite a good start was narrowly beaten 11 – 10 at the bell. Perhaps he lost concentration when an adventure with a 3 m carpet python eventuated as he was approaching hoop 8. Wallace Roy and Lynette Evans locked horns again with Lynette finishing ahead 15 – 9.

The game of the day, however, was when Chris Borlase took on Dianne, going down 26 – 3. Well done, Dianne, a major scalp. The attached photo shows Chris and Dianne on the lawn as Dianne attempts a split roll.

For details contact Sarah Widin 0417640704 (President )

Court Hire

Our courts may be available for community use or for special events, like workplace team-building or social gathering.

Our croquet equipment may be available for your guests in some special occasion (e.g. wedding) if suitable grounds are available. If you are interested, please phone, email or use the contact page.

Association Croquet

Association Croquet is a tactical game, usually between two players, consisting of running six hoops in order with two balls, clockwise first and then anti-clockwise, and finally hitting the central peg. It is played in a lawn measuring 35yards by 28 yards. The running of a hoop and hitting of the peg scores one point. The maximum score is, therefore, 26 points. Six hoops twice by two balls plus the pegging out.

Association

Croquet is a challenging and intriguing sport requiring tactical ability, judgment and skill rather than strength and fast reflexes.

Give it a go!.

Sunday was full of promise but, by early afternoon clouds rolled by and conditions were occasionally cool. Donna Manning didn’t feel it and played good croquet to keep Nick to three hoops while she made 18. Ken and Dianne had mixed games, on again off again, with no real dominance by either player ending with a score of 14 – 9 to Ken.

A one versus two game with Lynette playing Helen Andrews and Wallace saw Lynette a clear winner 17 -10.
