Rotary Club of Maleny World Polio Day Fund Raising Dinner

For more than 35 years Rotary International (RI) and its partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Whilst we’re close to eradicating polio, we’re not done yet. In 1988 there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. Today only two countries (Afghanistan and Pakistan) report cases of wild poliovirus. According to the WHO, if all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. Rotary has committed to raising $50 million per year for polio eradication. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total commitment of $150 million each year. The Rotary Club of Maleny donates a minimum of $1,000 each year to ending polio worldwide. Witta - A Short History

ituated some 8kms north west of Maleny, the area known as Witta, once called Teutoburg, was first settled by German immigrants by selection in 1887 and has a wonderful history of early settlement, dedicated hard work and strong family values.

Harry Walker, M.L.A. There is a delightful write up in the Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser of the day saying that the robust Harry rode 40 miles to be present at the opening ceremony and then “occupied the chair and in a few well-chosen words declared the School of Arts open.”

These early settlers are believed to have come from the Teutoburgh forest region of Munster, in northern Germany. They came bringing their farming heritage and set about clearing the land to create outstanding dairy and crop growing country, which it remains to this day. The area was noted for its crops, cheese and wine, as well as the timber industry.

This was a strong Lutheran community. The early settlers brought with them their historic values and a church was built in 1893 where the Lutheran Pastor E.Becker from Brisbane arranged for regular services. In 1911 a new church took its place. This historic monument to the faith of those early settlers is still in use today.

The Witta Sawmill, owned by the Tesch family and established in the 1910s, was a major business in Witta, eventually expanding to Caloundra and Landsborough.

Witta's history is one that reflects its earlier family values, hard work and community. However in the 1920’s a new-found sporting fame burned bright. Otto Nothling, son of one of the earliest settlers C.M. Nothling, who had a farm and vineyard in the area, was only one of two people ever to represent Australia at both Cricket and Rugby Union at international level.

A town reserve was surveyed there in 1888 and, interestingly, it was first called 'Maleny', but the local residents lobbied for the name to be changed to Teutoburg. 'Maleny' was transferred to the settlement on the Obi Obi Creek. The town was declared as called Witta on 18 May 1916, and recorded in the Queensland Government Gazette on 20 May 1916. The reason for the town’s name change was not spelt out in the Government Gazette but during the years of the First World War antiGerman sentiments were being expressed and people and places with Germanic sounding names came under close scrutiny by members of the public and by some government officials. To extinguish any doubts about their loyalty the people of Teutoberg petitioned for a name change for the area, and the area was renamed Witta which is believed to be a corruption of the word “Weyta” meaning dingo or wild dog in the Kabi Kabi language. A school was opened in 1892, first called the Teutoberg Provisional School and becoming the Teutoberg State School in 1909. The school closed in 1974 but still plays a key role as a community centre with shady areas, picnic tables and toilets. A School of Arts was opened in 1908 by Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Inc

He played rugby for Australia as full back in 19 international matches and cricket in one Test Match as a right arm medium fast bowler. For those of a sporting bent the only other Australian rugby and cricket dual international was Johnny Taylor. Today there are still excellent sports facilities in use at the Witta Recreational Club, including tennis courts that have been played on since the 1920’s. Opposite is the beautifully maintained Witta Cemetery. Some say that Witta is almost a suburb of Maleny but the rolling farmlands between the two settlements serve to complement, not vie with each other. Maleny has all the services and excitement of a vibrant township. Witta provides a gentler and more relaxed place, happily basking in a proud history from its early settlement days. Photo: C.M. The season starts on the 23rd October but you do need to be registered. Register at https://playreg.cricket.com.au/.../programsignup.aspx… You can contact Maleny Cricket Club on : 0427 543 662 We had a great start to the season for the Maleny Redbacks on the 3rd October. 3rds defeated TNT in a nail baiter. Batting first the Redbacks got off to a shakey start. Jonty was the mainstay opening the innings to score 39. Big Jack came out and scored a quick fire 46. At the end of their innings Maleny totalled a respectable 166. Jason and Brodie were the pick of the bowlers, both claiming 3 wickets to claim a final over victory with 3 runs to spare. 5ths were in trouble early at 5 for 60. Lijo then demonstrated a batting masterclass, scoring an amazing 124no. This helped the team to secure a impressive 225 off Maleny's allotted 40 overs. Yandina battled hard with the bat, but fell short of the total, being bowled out for 161. Tapash claimed 3 wickets, Dave and Tallis grabbed 2, Bailey secured a direct hit run out and Captain Judgey clutched 2 spectacular catches.
