Coat Rack

ore than ever this wonderful provision of warm clothing is paramount as the cold of a serious winter settles in. The Maleny Coat Rack is located in the laneway next to IGA and anyone is welcome to take or leave an item of warmth. Your donations of winter jackets, coats, jumpers and cardigans for men, women and children, are welcomed. There are hangers on the rack, so please feel free to hang your unwanted coats, jackets, jumpers and cardies. Organiser Ra' Yoga and Lifestyle’s Suzi Lough and Sue Krucker of Maleny State High school said "The vision is to initiate charity and change, through supporting our communities needs. Please NO other garments to be put on the rack, we can

only accomodate the above items. There is no blanket box for this year, if you have blankets to donate the Neighbourhood Centre is asking for help, so please drop them there.” The rack can only take the items mentioned so it is super important that everyone respects the rack and the IGA premises. Please help to rack small, tidy, and non intrusive – making it easy for the IGA staff to manage. The Maleny IGA fully supports the concept of the rack, staff taking it inside their store each evening as they close and bringing it out each morning as they open, which is such a wonderful community act of kindness. Thank you everyone for your support!

Where’s Sam, The Travelling Jackaroo?

If your club or organisation is an associate member of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club then you can publicise your club results and news in this, our “Community Billboard”.

Time for an update of where Maleny’s Sam Hughes, Slim the tractor, Bitsa the dog and Flynette the bird are. Here’s his latest blog post.

Keep your events diary up to date on the MDSARC Inc Web site so that we all know about your communities important events.

As I was leaving the outskirts of town though I got a call on the UHF from Jodie asking if I’d be able to pull over for a second, as I pulled into the dusty truck bay. Jodie pulled up in her ute followed by another car, out hopped two indigenous ladies and a small boy, I didn’t think too much of it until I was told that he was bit of a trouble maker in town; in the minutes that followed we took some photos, he couldn’t stop smiling at the setup, I gave him a couple stickers, taught him how to do a proper handshake and to look someone in the eyes when you do and let him hold Flynnette.

This is your newsletter - let all of Maleny know the latest info from your club every week! All articles, results, posters and photos (as large sized jpegs, please do not embed these in a Word doc) for inclusion in the weekly sports results should be emailed to denvergail1@gmail.com no later than 12 noon every Monday.

"Just went through Halls Creek, the time is 10pm, waiting for me was Jodie a local Ranger, she escorted me through town ashing lights and all, it was quiet – and actually quite scenic.

I was about to leave after giving him some words about how good kids become good adults, and how lucky he is to live out in country as beautiful as this, when he came up and gave me a hug and a “ Thank you mister”, accompanied by a simple “you have no idea what you’ve just done” from Jodie, smiling like heck. Never really viewed myself as a role model for kids but apparently tonight I am.” You can follow Sam’s blog, along with his 100,000 followers - a fantastic milestone reached this week - at https://www.facebook.com/thetravellingjackaroo

Phoebe

We’ve had wonderful feed-back about the snippets of Maleny history being reproduced each week, so this week we meander through an early tale of dairying in North Maleny. With thanks to the Friends of Pattemore House for this story.

or

When the Pattemore family rst came to Maleny and built Fairview (Pattemore House) in 1907, JR Pattemore also wanted to establish an operational dairy farm. With Fairview completed, his sons very quickly built them their dairy bails to enable the family to earn a living. They were constructed as traditional walkthrough bails, whereby each cow enters a stall, is milked, and then continues forward through a door back into the paddocks. The “Old Bails” still stand, and continue to interest visitors to the Precinct, situated as they are very close to the Heritage Trail on the Maleny Precinct. JR Pattemore retired from dairying in 1914, aged 64, however for the next 33 years he operated his farm on a share-farming basis until he died, aged 96 yrs. At rst, his sons were the share-farmers. William Dickson, his wife Maude, son Alex and daughters Jean (Janet) and Lillian Rose became the Pattemore’s share-farmers from 1927 to the late 1930s, and the whole family helped with milking the Pattemore's Friesian herd daily. The Dickson family lived in a house named ‘Mosman’ built on the Pattemore property close to the bails by Albert Pattemore in approximately 1909, situated approximately 200 metres away from ‘Fairview’. It’s widely reported that the rst Friesian cattle were introduced to Maleny when Bill Dickson and JR Pattemore returned with 2 bulls from a Kingaroy sale in the 1930’s; one of them name Phoebe! It is also thought that the bulls might have been bought from the Goomeri Burnbrae Friesian stud, which was quite near Kingaroy.

Piebe?

Due to their excellent milking capacity, black and white Friesians soon dotted the fertile hillsides of Maleny’s many diaries. The Friends of Pattemore House interviewed Jean Dickson (now Larney) before she passed away, who told how she was aged 5 years old when her family moved into 'Mosman' in 1927. Jean lived there until 1945, when she married Jack Larney, and recalled how she was a little girl when her father brought the bull home. After the death of JR, the Pattemores sold their farm, and there was a series of owners, with most continuing to employ share farmers to keep running the dairy. The share farmers lived in Fairview, rather than Mosman. Jean Howard, the wife of share farmer Horace Howard, recalling that in the 1950's she used to walk across to the bails every day to help with the milking, until she learned to drive the tractor! The historical track she and others used to travel between Fairview and the Bails can be seen in early aerial photos, and these references were provided by the Friends and used to determine the accurate placement of the ’new' trail by the Sunshine Coast Council. So the next time you are taking a stroll across the walk between Fairview and the Old Bails, you know you are walking in the once daily footsteps of the Pattemores and afterwards all of the Fairview farming families, with some of the tale delightfully re ected in the poetry and sculptures along the way. Photo Below: Jean Dickson hand feeding calves at ‘Mosman’

JR's oddly named bull was probably a misunderstanding of the stud name Piebe, which was well known at the time – a stud name used for many ne Friesian sires, including: “Dominion Woodcrest Piebe Mercedes” “King Peitertje Ormsby Piebe” and “Burnbrae Pontiac Piebe”.

The Merry Widow - a Review You won't nd any sign of grieving for lost love in the Maleny Singers production of Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow. Accompanied by the 20 piece Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra, conducted by the masterful Margaret Taylor, here is a wonderful piece of theatre and music. Not to be overly enthusiastic - but Lehar would be pleased to see his work handled with such air and energy. Sumptuous costumes adorn the cast from the accomplished leads to the young pony master. With plenty of satire and comedy delivered with wry aplomb that keeps the storyline moving along, the audience is kept guessing through various storylines to the last scene. What will the wealthy widow’s decision be? You can nd out at this week-end’s nal performances tickets details are in the poster. See you at Maxim’s!

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny It’s been a busy week. Wednesday 8th we played against Caloundra in the Lochwood pennants competition. Caloundra sent two players, Helen Matchett and Howard Williams. We elded a team of three, Donna Manning, Ken Barker and Sarah Widin. Donna and Ken played the singles with Ken losing to Helen and Donna winning against Howard. In the doubles Sarah and Donna won. Well done, the Range, winning the match two games to one. The next day, Thursday 9th, there was a ricochet pennants match. Ranbour elded an all Maleny team consisting of Donna, Sarah, and Ken. The visiting team, Coolum consisted of George Oliver and William Yip. Ken lost the singles game against George Oliver. Sarah won against William Yip. Donna and Sarah won the doubles. Ranbour managed another win two games to one. This was a good result putting us in the top teams of both competitions. Social games were played on lawn one on Thursday as well. Lynette Evans nished just ahead of Diane Horsman 12 – 11. Wallace Roy and Helen Andrews 8 won against Sally Adams and Kath Smith 6. It was a good day’s play.
