Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Welcome to Maleny! What an absolutely wonderful afternoon it was on Saturday at the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club’s festive “Meet and Greet” event.

closer, not knowing if Qld would or would not go into lockdown. However, the 2021 event was a big success and would have seen some very happy Lions by the end of the day!

New residents to the Blackall Range were warmly welcomed under perfect Qld spring weather skies. This year, the long standing and signature Lions event was held on the Ziza Field, at the Maleny District Sport and Rec Club’s lease area on the Community Precinct and the new outdoor format was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

As the Lion’s Meet and Greet 2021 event of Saturday revealed, there are plenty of new residents moving to our beautiful part of the world.

Plenty on Offer in Maleny!

Families as well as retirees, all seeking to integrate and join the community, and of course, Maleny is famous for its large number of community groups - there’s literally something for everyone! Continued Page 2

Delicious picnic boxes from the Maleny Orangery made for a delightful afternoon tea as guest speakers introduced the new residents to the many different aspects of Maleny life. MC Andrew Powell kept everything ticking along and the hard-working Lions made sure the refreshments were plentiful. Raf es were drawn, new friends made. Many months in the planning, there were a few nerves for the organisers as the day drew

Do the Right Thing!

We all love our pooches and the weather has never been better for getting out into the great outdoors to enjoy a ramble with them. Respecting our beautiful environment and others when we are out and about is easy to do - but unfortunately, it only takes a few incidents by those not doing the right thing to spoil things for everyone. There are a growing number of reported incidents involving pets that have seen the Council animal inspectors visit the town, the Community Precinct and the Showgrounds. Did you know that the ne for having your dog off-leash on the Community Precinct, for instance, is $275. Keeping your pets leashed and therefore under control means that others are not nervous when they too are enjoying a walk, and picking up your doggie's little (or otherwise…..) offerings is simply good manners. Please take the doggy bags home or dispose in the bins provided, make sure your dog is on leash in those designated areas – and we can all enjoy walking together!

Maleny Historical Memories with Desley Malone As is often the case at this time of year, it’s dry. Already the water delivery trucks are getting busier and busier as residents start to run low on tank water!

Lock in Saturday 2 October, 2021 9.00am-4.00pm. The Maleny Garden Club will host a Garden Market with plants & produce stalls, talks with experts, morning & afternoon teas & lunches - PLUS open gardens!

In 1985 Fred Porter wrote of the terrible drought that he experienced in 1919. The drought broke in the last week of 1919 with three days of cyclonic wind and pouring rain. Cattle were poor and literally froze to death as they stood in creeks, gullies and water courses until they dropped as the running water was warmer than the wind and rain.

Sculpture, pottery and art displays will be discovered in the gardens. A hop on/hop off coach will help you get there. The cost will be $5 per garden and the tickets will be available at the Garden Market. Read more in the yer.

Drought again struck in 1951 and again the cattle suffered. You can read his story at this link:

The Busy Maleny Community Precinct

What a busy day Saturday was for the Maleny Community Precinct, all in glorious Spring weather. The weekly Parkrun got off to a ne trot at 7 am, the Golf course was well patronised all day, there was the Lion’s “Meet and Greet” function on the Ziza Field in the afternoon. Walkers and picnickers took advantage of the weather all day – and the public star-gazing in the evening at the Maleny Observatory drew a crowd of 130 keen planet watchers! Brisbane Astronomical Society has been conducting dark sky telescope nights at the Maleny Golf Club site for the last ve years. The high level of active astronomical use of the site, and extensive outreach to the general public, has now been recognised by the Astronomical Society of Australia with their designation of Maleny Observatory as Australia’s newest astronomical observatory. This move has introduced astronomy to thousands of Sunshine Coast residents.

Maleny local Neil Andison invites you to share his wealth of knowledge about the platypus, bird-life, habitat and so much more. Platypus Whispers Guided Walks will be for approximately 3 hours, with starting times of 6 am & 4 pm each Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Follow the Obi Creek along the Boardwalk, through town and then out to the Beersheba Platypus viewing platform on the Maleny Precinct. Follow Neil and see some of his fantastic photography by visiting his FB page at: https://www.facebook.com/platypuswhisperer1 "Thoroughly recommend Neil's platypus tour. His knowledge of local wildlife is amazing. Today we saw 2 platypus, at least 10 different birds and their nests, a turtle, an eel, and last but not least a family of 6 Tawny frogmouths! 3 hours wondering through the Obi Obi Board walk along the river - very special!” Helen “5 stars for the platypus whisperer. Awesome guide. Such an interesting few hours.” Lenore

Witta Tennis Club

Third time lucky the club tournament went ahead. I. t was a great morning of tennis and everyone fought extremely hard. But there can only be one winner. In rst place was John Bradshaw, runner up was Glenn Smith, minor prizes went to Obi Wynn and Leo Sanderson. Wednesday 1 September: With a spring in their step, the Witta Wagtails ventured on to the courts. Unfortunately, one Wagtail became lame and had to retire hurt. A quick SOS call to another wagtail and the match against the Eumundi Mixtures was able to continue. While the outcome was not one for the Wagtails to shout about, the tennis was great and the on-court camaraderie was fantastic. Thank you, Gerry Gabriel, Jan Maguire, Cheryl Cavanagh, Sheryn Golledge & Eumundi Mixtures' ladies for a great morning of tennis. Friday 3 September: Whistlers played at Witta against Mooloolaba Magnets. We had a little shower at the start, but then the sun came out and it turned out to be a nice day. It was a good match, we fought and there

were lots of running and rallies. But it was very hard tennis. Score was 1-7 sets, 24-42 games. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Annie Quarmby and Maree Hooley.

Kids Tennis Clinic Kids Tennis Clinic with Katya is on Wednesday 22nd & Thursday 23rd September between 8 am and 11 am. The cost is $25 per person per day. All levels tennis coaching, drills and games Morning tea included.

Tennis Quotes

Please RSVP to Maree 0437 295 501. We welcome beginners and friends. Happy to provide racquets if required.

As a tennis ball falls off a table, a golf ball shouts a question, "Are you going to be ok?"

Wednesday 8 September: Witta Wagtails versus Maroochydore TT’s - great morning of tennis, good rallies, good sportsmanship, thank you to all players. Cynthia Garvey and Gerry Gabriel were victorious with a 6-1 victory in one set, but the team were not able to repeat this level of performance in the other sets, the Maroochydore TT’s being the victors on the day.

What's the loudest part of tennis? The Racquet!

The tennis ball replies, "Of course. I'll bounce back.”

Friday 10 September: The Whistlers had they bye.
