Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Toleman Golf Day Raises $750 for Bloomhill Buderim Bloomhill Cancer Care’s Buderim Centre now has an additional $750 in its kitty this year, thanks to the generosity of Maleny Golf Club member Stan Toleman, his family and gol ng friends and acquaintances. The funds were raised as a result of a Mixed 4-Ball competition at Maleny Golf Club sponsored by Stan to thank the Bloomhill Cancer Care Centre and their staff for all the support they’d given him during his battle with the disease. Maleny Golf Club President Jeff Kruse said Stan had sadly passed away on 31 December, 2020 before the event could be organised and held. “However, we remained committed to honouring his request and his family generously offered $500 to sponsor the competition which attracted a eld of almost 60 players – the majority of whom were fellow members,” he said. “Stan was very fond of the golf club and over an extended period he saved us

signi cant costs through freely volunteering his professional skills as an electrical engineer,” Mr Kruse said. “He was also an active member of our future clubhouse subcommittee and drafted preliminary concept designs for us by drawing on experience from his involvement in designing the club house for the Maroochy River Golf Club where he also was a member.” Vale Stan Toleman. Thank you for your generous contribution of your time and skills for the betterment of the Maleny Golf Club and may you rest in peace. People can make donations via Monthly Appeal https://www.bloomhill.com.au/donate/ lymphoedema-awareness-month/20/SinglePayment, or if interested in volunteering, you can visit Become A Volunteer at Bloomhill Cancer Care: https://www.bloomhill.com.au/volunteer The Club membership year runs from the 1st November to the 31st October the following year. As a member of Maleny Golf Club, you will also receive reciprocal discounted rates at the following courses: Caloundra, Maroochy River, Mt Coolum & Woodford. Town Planning ….Have Your Say

The Sunshine Coast Council is in the early stages of preparing a new planning scheme for our region. The new planning scheme will guide future land use and development and will also seek to protect the things we love about our region. Why is it important you have your say? The planning scheme will determine development in Maleny - housing, shops, light industry, ageing in place - all will be driven by this plan and it's important you have your say now and not after the plan is in place. The council is hosting a series of sessions to talk you through this. One being in Tesch Park on 22 March 9am to 11am. All are welcome to attend and discuss topics with Council Planning Of cers. To provide feedback online by completing surveys at the below link: https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/newplanningscheme? fbclid=IwAR3Izn8sa7ZrogfE_pZZc7fVP4rbbBn90Q2yfjiIUQi7Xwu_e8N_oy8LZ5w

and here are the info sessions timetable for all Hinterland areas: https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ newplanningscheme/information-sessions Feedback is open until 31 March 2022. Have Your Say!

Toiletry Packs Delivered to Lismore

Monday, 14 March 2022

It’s ST PATRICK’S DAY

Last week we brought you news of the efforts that local Jared Ashcroft and supporters, the Hinterland BMX Club were going to, collecting basic toiletries packs, ready to deliver to ood affected families in Lismore.

MALENY BOWLS CLUB

The packs were put together last week from items generously donated by businesses and individuals. Over the week-end, we can update that Jared and his partner Chris drove the donated items to Lismore, to a distribution centre.

THURSDAY 17 MARCH 2022 1.30pm – 4.00pm

Jared, principal at J’s Sports Aid Maleny, had this to report ”No words can adequately begin to describe the vast scale of destruction this ood has caused in Lismore. Houses, business and schools have been left utterly devastated. Piles of furniture, household goods and cars lining every street, as far as the eye can see. Debris scattered throughout trees, massive logs sitting upon rooftops. For Lismore this ood was record breaking. The northern NSW town has not recorded a bigger ood since records began in 1887. The amount of water that went through is completely incomprehensible. The emotions are so raw, it brings tears to our eyes. To all involved, from those who have lost absolutely everything, to those who are dedicating their time and resources to help the mammoth efforts of cleanup, recovery and eventual rebuild, we wish you all the best for the present and future”.

Come to St George Anglican Church at 2 Walker Drive Maleny on 2pm Sunday March 20. It was imported from China into Japan in the early eighth century, and remains one of Japan’s more popular traditional musical instruments. Riley is an international master for the playing of this Japanese ute. Riley Kelly Lee is an American-born Australian-based shakuhachi player and teacher. Maleny Netball Needs You!

They really are searching for a coach for one of the junior teams at the moment - If you can help, or know of anyone who might, please contact Lainie on table.talk@bigpond.com

3.

Scorers are valued. Every week each team is required to provide a scorer. These scorers are integral for the competition and it is not the coach's job to chase up scorers. Please ensure seating is prioritised courtside for players, team coaches / managers and scorers. Please be mindful that you are not obstructing their view or distracting them.

4.

Kids playing sport deserve to feel safe and welcome. This includes staying home if your child is feeling unwell. If you have any concerns regarding the safety or wellbeing of your child within the scope of netball please direct these to the member protection of cer.

And as we head into the start of the junior netball season… a friendly reminder that 1.

Coaches are volunteers. They have jobs and lives and families outside of netball and we are very thankful for their investment in our juniors. Please give them the space to do their job during games and respect their coaching decisions and directions.

2.

Umpires are human. They are quite often kids who are developing in the role and they have to make hundreds of split second decisions every single game. Parents are not permitted to approach or make comment to umpires at any time - but are welcome to say thank you at the end of the game.

Parents are not permitted to approach coaches to question their decisions, any concerns must be directed to the member protection of cer (Donna) via email at. mnaregistrar@gmail.com 5.

Our kids are playing sport for so many reasons other than winning. They are learning lifelong skills such as good sportsmanship, teamwork, resilience, patience, motivation and determination.

Volunteers are valued and needed - if you can spare some time, pease contact them, and you can follow Maleny Netball at their page: https://www.facebook.com/ MalenyNetballAssociation

Saving the Dark

A successful AGM last Thursday saw the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club’s 2022 committee elected. Special Guest Dr Ken Wishaw from the Brisbane Astronomical Society gave an excellent presentation to a good turn out of MDSRC members. His presentation, “Saving the Dark” drew attention to the fact that the Maleny district is the last area of coastal South East Queensland that is not severely affected by light pollution. As convenor of the newly instated Maleny Observatory, where the astronomers regularly hold their popular Public Star Gazing nights, Ken reminded everyone that not only are polluted skies bad for our health and the environment in general, but that Maleny and surrounding districts enjoy diverse wildlife, much of which is adversely affected by excessive arti cial lighting at night.

Maleny Bowls Club

Junior Bowls Activity During March 2022 a letter from Sunshine Coast District Men’s Bowls Association will be sent to all schools in our area inviting them to make contact with Maleny Bowls Club to participate in junior bowls activities as part of their sports curriculum. This includes Maleny State School, Maleny High School, River School, Independent School, Montville State School, Conondale State School. In preparation of the in ux of junior lawn bowlers the Maleny Bowls Club Board has applied for a Sunshine Coast Council Grant of $7,500 to purchase 15 sets of junior lawn bowls to complement the Sporting Schools junior kits of rubber bowls for the younger children we already have.

A major contributor to light pollution are unshielded street lights with a high blue content in their light. Ken is spearheading a team to help make policy changes that will protect the night skies. Guest Andrew Powell MP was invited to make comment, and he said “One of the most educational parts of last night’s AGM was hearing from Ken Wishaw from the Maleny Observatory and Australasian Dark Sky Alliance.” Offering his support to help make changes that will help keep our skies free from light pollution, Andrew later posed this question: “If there was a way to replace our street light bulbs with alternatives that maintained safety, lowered costs (because they’re more ef cient), bene tted the environment and human health and kept our skies “dark”, would you support such moves? Seems like a “no brainer” doesn’t it? Ken and I are looking to team up to encourage the Government to do just that.” We’ll bring you updates on progress as the "Saving the Dark" initiative gains momentum. Our plan is to introduce children through their schools to the great game of lawn bowls from which we will endeavour to attract new junior members to the club. We will then provide children with coaching, training and xtures to improve their skills. Participating clubs can then conduct inter-club competitions to hone their skills further. An annual secondary schools statewide competition is conducted to showcase the talent of participants. State, National and International opportunities are available for the best of the best. As well as attracting junior members to our club we would also endeavour to sign up parents and carers to also join creating a broad range of new members. The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Pennants began on Wednesday 9th , at home, with a Lochwood Shield match against Bribie Island club. Bribie played one player down due to Covid. Al Keetman was moved up from division 4 to ll the gap. Al played well, scoring 11 against Sarah’s 24. Ken beat their other player, Greg Whymark, 26 – 0 using 3 bisques. At 0 – 2 down Bribie fought back in a hotly contested doubles against Sarah and Donna to win that game 18 -12 restoring honour to both sides. The Range won the match 2 games to 1.

Lynette played a rule-relaxed game to record an eight all draw.

Ricochet pennants were played the next day, also at home, with a rampaging Ranbour (Range + Nambour) team elding Bill Habner (Nambour) Ken, Vince Carbery and Sarah. They played against Lesley Johnston and Diane Horsman from Headland Buderim. Bill beat Lesley 17 – 13 and Ken beat Diane 21 – 8, giving the Ranbour team a 2 – 0 lead going into the doubles game. Diane and Lesley adapted to the increasing rain with its consequent slowing of the lawn to hit their straps and win 18 – 10 against Vince and Sarah. Nevertheless, Ranbour won the match two games to one.

Meanwhile, on lawn 1 a very exciting game of doubles in which “the girls” (Val Carbery and Sarah) played the “old boys” (Vince and Ken). Fluctuating fortunes and good play all round required Ken to peg his ball out to squeak ahead on the bell. With a chance to even it up or win Sarah couldn’t make the roquet leaving the result at 20 – 19 to Vince and Ken. Great game
