Maleny’s Travelling Jackeroo up for Award

Maleny’s Sam Hughes, AKA the Travelling Jackeroo, has been nominated as Qld's 2023 Young Australian!

Up against three other fine young Queenslanders, Sam has flown to Brisbane to attend the Awards Ceremony which takes place in Brisbane on Tuesday 15th November.

Leaving his dog Bitza and beloved Slim the Chamberlain tractor behind in Perth, Sam said "I feel extremely honoured and privileged to not only be nominated for the award but also to be classed in the same league as these extraordinary individuals and thoroughly look forward to meeting them in person and shaking their hands. A huge thank you to everyone who voted, and to everyone for your

ongoing support towards raising awareness and funds for mental health – and for my charities Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, Dolly's Drea and Drought Angels”.

You’ll probably recall how a young man with dreams of raising funds for three different charities dear to his heart, set off from Maleny’s Maple St on Sunday 21st March 2021. Cheered on his way by locals, and sporting “P” plates at the time, 18 year old Sam has been chugging around Australia ever since on his fundraising mission in his bright orange 50 year old tractor.

That’s an unusual enough way to spend your gap year, but this trusty tractor also tows a trailer (custom-built to house a small car and store Sam’s essentials) his tinny sits atop the tractor, a motorbike is strapped to the back, and atop the trailer sits the fuselage of an old Cessna plane. You’ll see how he’s managed to collect a gyro complete with pilot since he left too!

His trip is entirely self-funded, Sam paying his own costs by working on remote properties, helping Show circuit folk in the show season, and is currently following along with the famed Moscow Circus, working for them as he goes from town to town.

Along the way, Sam visits schools helping to alleviate the issues of bullying and mental health in the bush by talking with the students, teachers and families.

Follow Sam’s adventures at his blog: https://www.facebook.com/ thetravellingjackaroo and you can support Sam’s fundraising by visiting http://ow.ly/kwHg50LzpkZ

Congratulations Sam you are already a winner in Maleny's eyes. PhotoBelow : Sam leaving Maleny in 2021

Join in the Net Set Go Program!

Net Set Go is a fantastic program run as an introductory fun course to the sport of Netball. It is a lot of fun and is for BOYS and GIRLS! It’s a chance to learn the netball basics, get outside, pick up a netball or chuck on a bib and make some friends.

Each participant will receive their very own pack which includes a netball and t-shirt The program is at risk of not going ahead this term due to low numbers. We only need a few more kids to join in to keep it running, it’s hard enough keeping sporting clubs running in small towns we really need to support their programs and efforts in the community to bring sports to our families.

If your kids are, interested feel free to send a message to malenynetball@gmail.com

NetSetGo (ages 5-10) happens on Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm at Maleny High School.

Come and get the kids involved, you know you want to!

Witta Tennis News Witta Tennis “Kids Fun Day”

The Sunshine Coast Veterans Tennis came to an exciting end of season finale with the three Divisions playing at Palmwoods on Sunday November 6th.

Witta Wompoos were up against a fired up Nambas team who were determined to even up the score after losing to Witta in a previous round. The team of Mal, Sean, Haydyn, Tony, Paula and Annie fought gallantly but the Nambas side were far too good on the day coming out winners 10 sets to 2. A number of hard-fought tie breakers made for very competitive tennis.

Many thanks to all our players, including our regulars Donna and Andrew and part time fill ins Craig and Cindy.

Looking forward to a wonderful summer of tennis on the tv so we can learn a few tricks for 2023.

Friday 11 November: The Whistlers played their semi-final against Mooloolaba Legends. Perfect weather for the tennis and we all fought very hard with lots of running, hitting and deuces. We couldn't get through the Legends but had great tennis and good company. Score was 26-44 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Maree Hooley and thanks Robyn Brown for filling in. That's it for the year, thanks team for a great season. We'll keep going in the coming year, go Whistlers!

Kid’s Fun Day: Katya's Tennis Drills

Thrills and Fitness is on Friday Nights at 5:45pm. Cost is $20.

Why not come along and join in the fun. All levels of tennis skills are welcome. Enquiries can be made on 0437 295 501

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

Lynette Evans, Diane Horsman, and Sally Adams played a six-ball game on Thursday. Though the rules are Association Croquet it is very different tactically. Normally players use the “first” colours – Red, Yellow Black and Blue, with one pair of the “seconds” in this instance Brown and Green.

A player must choose which four balls she is going to play with in her turn. If she is the player of Black and Blue she might, in a particular position nominate Green and Brown thereby excluding any play with Red and Yellow in that turn. Players keep the same order throughout the game.

It is a lot of fun, and it has been known for two players to “gang up” on a third though this is neither common nor easy. Lynette came out ahead on the day scoring 9 hoops to Diane’s 3 and Sally’s 2.

Nick Cram and Vince Carbery also played a game of singles. Nick showing the same form which earned him the second division trophy in the November tournament won 19 – 10.

Kath Smith and Wallace Roy teamed up to play Lynette on Sunday, losing to her 5 – 10. Ken Barker and Vince were given a lesson in good forward play by Donna Manning and Sarah Widin who both made good breaks in their game. Sarah took just two breaks to peg out. The result: 19 – 6 to the girls.

Attached Photo: Sarah Widin, club president, presenting the second division shield to Nick Cram.

In 1991 the Maleny Croquet Club was formed and a piece of ground became available for their use at the Maleny Showgrounds and in December 1992

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.15.

And the rain just keeps falling

In New South Wales more than 222 people have been rescued from floodwater across the state in the past 24 hours as the rain keeps falling. Many of those rescued were from rooftops and trees.

Around Forbes, NSW, many residents still haven't been able to return home from the flooding two weeks ago, and now they’re in the same flooding situation again.

Makes one thankful that we live in Maleny and do not generally suffer the consequences of inundation.
