On the Move with the Maleny Visitor Information Centre The team of volunteers from the MVIC had a great morning out on the Maleny Community Precinct last week. The volunteers, resplendent in their green shirts, were noticeable as they took note of available delights for visitors on the Precinct.

was next door for another presentation and some yummy morning tea at beautiful Pattemore House, where they learned more about the 1907 white beech constructed farmhouse, built by the four Pattemore brothers by hand for their parents.

Kicking off their grand tour at the Maleny Golf Club, President Jeff Kruse outlined what their club and golf course has to offer those who love a game of golf on one of the most picturesque 18 hole courses in Qld. Then it

These day it provides a different kind of heritage experience, with tours of the restored house and garden now popular. A trip down Parklands Drive to the Beersheba Living Museum was next, where they were greeted

by Chas Morris of the 5th Light Horse Regiment, who gave an interesting talk on what it takes to be a Troop member and what visitors could expect. This was followed by a précis of what the Maleny District Sport and Rec Club offers in their Clubhouse (that houses the Museum) for their 60 member clubs and others, and what they plan to achieve on their leased area. This included an update on Maleny Settlers Green, the new park being constructed on the MDSRC leased land as an initiative of a combined community service club partnership. Nearing completion, a children’s play area is next to be built in stages, the well-tended park (that includes a Heritage Camellia Grove) looking a picture after all the recent rain. The MVIC volunteers then viewed Barung Landcare’s closeby lease, where dozens of trees are being planted in anticipation of a new Environmental Centre Photo Left: Morning tea and talk at Pattemore House

Maleny’s Big Rock! There are a lot of famous big rocks in Australia, so it is great to have a legendary Rotary Rock right here in Maleny. Here’s the story….. The Rotary Centenary Project for Rotary Club of Maleny in 2005 was the refurbishment of the Howells Knob Lookout at Reesville, in conjunction with the then Caloundra City Council. It was decided to obtain a large rock to house a directional plaque at a new rotunda for visitors.

stolen. This rendered the rock a bit of a mystery to visitors! Approximately 11 years later, at the same time that Maleny District Sport and Rec Club was looking out for a base for a new plaque at the agpoles base at their newlybuilt new clubhouse on the Maleny Precinct, Council had decided that the rock had become a trip hazard.

Rotary sourced a one tonne rock from Bracalba Quarry near Kenilworth and transported it to Howells Knob in Chris Brooker’s ute. The Rock was placed on site by Council and the plaque established but unfortunately the plaque only lasted a short period until it was removed/

This is completely understandable, said rock being approx. 550 x 600 x 500. Because the MDSRC building also houses the 5th Light Horse Troop’s

Beersheba Museum and memorabilia, MDSRC and the Troop were actively seeking a suitably impressive base for a plaque. As Patron of MDSRC, Rotarian Chris Brooker suggested moving and using the rock from Howells Knob. Rotary were very happy to agree to have it rehoused onto the Ziza Field in front of the sport and rec building, and gave the green light to the idea. Council got on board, and moved the rock with a crane truck and an excavator, carefully placing it on site. The Rotary Rock is now very happy on the Ziza Field in its new situation – it seems very happy there with a great view of the Community Precinct, its brand new plaque sitting proudly on top.

Sam Gets Tractio What a rig! It's certainly going to be very noticeable. The Travelling Jackaroo from Maleny, AKA Sam Hughes, is getting pretty excited about now, as his dream of travelling the Queensland outback to raise money for charity is almost upon him. A last minute donation of a comprehensive rst aid kit from Jared Ashcroft JS Sports First Aid which will be a very handy thing to have out in the bush too. With everything checked and ready, Sam's departure date will now be on the 18th of March from Maleny's Maple Street around 9am, so if you’re around, we're sure a cheery wave will be welcome. Aboard his rig is also a portable movie cinema set up, which is one of the ways Sam will be raising money for the three charities Dolly’s Dream, The Royal Flying Doctor Service and Lights on the Hill. Wondering just how much fuel he’s going to need? Sam said that "For anyone interested in my range and fuel capacity, the tractor has twin long range 80L tanks (160L) and the trailer carries 80L of Diesel and 20L of petrol (for the car, motorbike and generator). Meaning the tractor has a rough range of around 600kms (240L) using roughly 40L/100kms (which is a worst case fuel consumption rate (ie pulling uphills with a headwind and 3.5tons on trailer on my back (better to overestimate fuel consumption rates than to underestimate them…) ”. Once he’s ticked the car safely inside his custom built trailer, he will be off - good luck from everyone in Maleny Sam! If you’d like to follow Sam’s adventures, he will be updating his blog at:

Did you know!

With thanks to the Maleny Historical Society for the following snippet. The rst house built on the spot of 3 Maple Street today was around 1906 - 1910. It has been said that the original house was the rst in Maleny….That house was demolished and Mrs Long, a dressmaker, built a new one. This became Reg Whalley’s Barber Shop and when he went to WWII, it had a short tenancy as a sh shop. After the war, a couple of enterprising young ladies ran a brothel there, but it remained known by “the boys” as The Fish Shop! In 2016, this building became the popular Maple 3 Cafe.

COMBINED PROBUS CLUB OF MALENY Inc. On February 24th we had our rst meeting for 2021 and on March 24 we will have our AGM and will elect our of ce bearers for 2021/2022. Our guest speaker at the February meeting was Sandie Johnston who is the Sunshine Coast ‘Waste to Resources” co-ordinator. Sandie was an excellent and entertaining speaker who explained what can and what cannot be put in our yellow recycling bin. Small items like bottle caps, tin and jar lids should be placed inside a larger container as the items are too small for the machinery to sort and will foul the system and result in processing down time. Glass bottles are ne but drinking glasses are a big No-No. Drinking glasses have a different composition than bottles and cannot be recycled.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny The “Fun Rovers” group visited on Thursday morning to play golf croquet. It was pleasing to see 25 people playing on half-courts and having a great time. Unfortunately, they stole all of the good weather for the day. In the afternoon it was too wet to play.

A clear and sunny day meant good playing conditions on Sunday. Miggy Mackie beat Vince Carbery 20 – 9. Nick Cram played well against Val Carbery winning 19 – 10. Ken Barker and Stuart Craig were away to a good start against Helen Andrews and Sarah Widin but Sarah showed good control to come back late in the piece to make a winning break with the nal score 14 – 13 in favour of the girls. Janelle Wilson played well to beat Wallace Roy 11 – 6 scoring, she thinks, her rst singles win in club play. Well done Janelle. All games were played in a lively manner with a fair amount of banter adding to the enjoyment of the day. The attached photo shows Stuart Craig, nicely balanced with a decent back swing, about to make hoop 3.

Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am For details contact, or Contact Sarah Widin President 0417 640 704. The club was formed in 1991and we did not have our own lawns until they were opened in 1993. Croquet is most popular in England and has been since its inception in the 1850's as a both a professional sport and a recreational activity. This is a traditional pastime of the rich people and was generally plated in exclusive country clubs. There is also much information about the club on the web site below.
