Maleny is Blooming!
Your Club News
Maleny's freshly updated roundabout makeover is just the rst step in a bid to give the town a colourful facelift. A new local group, the Maleny Street Gardeners Alliance, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council, have started the process of adding some extra colour and vibrancy to the township, with the roundabout just the beginning in this community project!
If your club or organisation is an associate member of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club then you can publicise your club results and news in this, our “Community Billboard”.
Maleny Street Gardeners’ Alliance is a group of local residents and avid gardeners with a joint interest in the beauti cation of Maleny and, in particular, Maple Street and the Riverside Centre, for the bene t of both locals and visitors alike.
Keep your events diary up to date on the MDSARC Inc Web site so that we all know about your communities important events.
Planning is underway to erect hanging baskets and place tubs of owers along Maple Street, Riverside Centre, the Bridge, Maleny Hotel and the RSL. Consultation is currently in progress with the Sunshine Coast Council, Main Roads and other interested parties to move this exciting new venture forward. Plans are in their early stages but with the support and sponsorship of Maleny landlords and business owners such as local businessman Ian Russell, the pioneer of hanging baskets in Maleny, and enthusiastic approval from Maleny Commerce, Councillor Winston Johnston and others, the group is very hopeful that this ambitious new venture will ‘blossom’ into reality very soon.
This is your newsletter - let all of Maleny know the latest info from your club every week! All articles, results, posters and photos (as large sized jpegs, please do not embed these in a Word doc) for inclusion in the weekly sports results should be emailed to
Already the tree has also been decorated with Christmas ornaments and decorations and is lighted at night. This makes a welcoming entry to the Maleny business area.
denvergail1@gmail.com
Mitre 10 Maleny and its suppliers have come to the party by donating 50 hanging baskets and the potting mix required, with Ian Russell donating funds to purchase a motorised water cart for regular watering of the new plantings, to ensure they continue to look their best. In the meantime, the Maleny Street Gardeners Alliance will keep locals informed of the progress, as and when it happens.
no later than 12 noon every Monday.

Late Night Christmas Shopping in Maleny! The wonderful team at the Maleny Commerce are once agin working hard - they are presenting for your enjoyment a Maleny Late Night Christmas! On Friday 10 December, Maleny’ main street will be transformed into a hive of late-night shopping, eating and entertainment, between 5pm to 8pm.
Our retail businesses are extremely excited and some of them have some wonderful in-store and front door activities for the night. We've heard about an old fashion tombola, movies showing on walls, staff dressing up, inhouse promotions - buy something in-store and go into the draw to win - to name a few.
Paulette Steele from Maleny Commerce says "We have so much planned for this event; it's going to be great for the entire family.
It's been such a pleasure to visit our businesses and encourage them to stay open, everyone has been so excited about the event and the festive vibe. You can also have a chance to WIN a $500 Maleny Gift Card through our raf e on the night. Here is a tip: The street won't be closed and it's sure to be busy at the crossings, to save you time if you are driving through, you could go around Coral Street and avoid the crowds. Like and follow our event FB page which is https://www.facebook.com/malenylatenightchristmas For more details call Nicole Hilton on 0404 232 770
This year the streets will not be closed rather we are having a late-night shopping, eating and entertainment event activating the entire street. We want to support our small businesses and bring a festival atmosphere to an evening event. Who doesn't like late night shopping? We also have Maleny Handmade Markets running a Christmas market for us in the community centre. Most of our cafes will be open so you can sit and enjoy the music and Christmas atmosphere or grab something and walk around and explore. We start the night off with the Sunshine Statesmen Quartette singing Christmas carols from the Community Centre Deck down into the Street from 5.15pm to 6.00pm. We have music playing at both ends of the street and a band playing at Maleny Lane which will have their usual eclectic food mix. The Riverside centre is hosting a petting zoo for the kids and a jumping castle. On the vacant grass next to Peace of Green, we will have Christmas storytelling throughout the night. Come and sit on the rugs and scattered pillows and enjoy our dressed-up storytellers, something for all the family. Then move up to Easton Lawyers Gardens where Santa and Mrs Claus will be from 5pm to 7pm for your chance to take photos with Santa.

Watsons Garage has Pumped its Last It was with great sadness after over 60 years of trade that Watson's Garage pumped their last petrol on Friday 12th November. The new owners would like to thank the Maleny community for all of their support over the years, saying "We regret that this decision has to be made, however progress has forced our hand. To all our suppliers and the community once again, we are sorry but we thank you. Over many years of service and contribution we also would like to thank the staff. We look forward to sharing new and exciting ventures in this location.” It’s always sad to see another Maleny icon close. With thanks to Desley Malone and Maleny Historical Memories for the following brief history. 56 Maple Street, Watson’s Garage Walter L Watson purchased this business from Harry Lyons along with a 1937 Bedford truck, a 1939 Vauxhall 6 taxi, a 1942 GMC bus and a 1942/43 KS5 Lend Lease International truck.

In 1944 it was a thriving goods transport, bus passenger and taxi service centre. The bus and truck depot was situated across the road. The present garage was built in 1954 by Walter and sons Doug and Neville. It became known as W L Watson & Sons. Walter passed away suddenly in 1961. For 30 years they had the mail run to Landsborough, also supplying molasses for stock-feed from 1945. The proprietors of the garage in 1988 were Mark and Leonie Higham. In 2008 it was still known as Watson’s Garage, with Simon Moore in charge. Maleny Home Brew Supplies was located with Barne’s Welding at the rear and more recently, has been the place to drop by on a Friday to buy fresh seafood form the van.
