Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Maleny Players “The Shakespeare Project” Maleny Players have become well known for their plays and as a community theatre, particularly their Christmas pantomime with large casts involving local children involved in our Youth Theatre. Our Youth Theatre group meets regularly during school term.

T

he Maleny Players next production will be ‘The Shake-speare Project’ written and directed by Andrew Robjohns.

As 2023 is the 400yr anniversary of the printing of the First Folio of Shakespeare’s Plays – Comedies, Histories and Tragedies, the Shakespeare Project has been written to celebrate this signi cant work on this occasion. It also explores the idea of whether it is; ‘A Conspiracy or Truth! Did Shakespeare write the works that are attributed to him?’

through the discovery and exploration of classic texts utilising voice, movement and stagecraft. Actors build an ensemble that values both the dramatic process as well as high-quality performance. In this supportive and transformative environment centuries-old texts are given new life and relevance not only for the actors, audience, and community.

The play follows the struggle of a young woman completing her master’s thesis on the production of the First Folio. You also will witness insights that she is given into revelatory scenes that show not only who wanted the plays produced, but also who did not. The history of The Shakespeare Project started In October 1983 when the Riverside Shakespeare Company, then New York City's only year-round professional Shakespeare theatre company, inaugurated The Shakespeare Project, based at the theatre company's home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, The Shakespeare Centre. Project Shakespeare engages and inspires theatre artists

Farewell Gail Denver There is to be Public Memorial and a sendoff for our member, Gail Denver. It is to take place on Saturday 21st October at 10am. It will be held at the Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club club-house located at the end of Parkland Drive on the Maleny Precinct, in North Maleny. There will be morning tea and drinks provided. This will be a day to celebrate Gail’s life and recount some of the past work that she did for many Maleny organisations. Many community volunteers are very good at coming up with ideas to improve those organisations then leave it for others to carry out. Gail not only had the ideas, but she was a “doer” and she made things happen. Gail will leave a very big hole in the many community organisations for which she volunteered. Sadly, Gail passed on on September 30th, 2023. Gail was heavily involved in volunteering for the many organisations for which she tirelessly worked. All are welcome to attend and to celebrate her life!.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny It’s been such a busy week on the lawn that Wallace Roy has been complaining about how it’s wearing out the grass. The attached photo below shows a particularly social day, Thursday, when over twenty people graced the grounds with David Kerr, Claire Christianson and Wendy Raven, new members of the club admiring Ricky Barret’s pugilistic stance as Wallace Roy looks askance at the frivolity of it all. We had visitors from various clubs, Caloundra, Headland, and Bribie, and as far a eld as Tasmania. Ken Barker and Nick Cram played a semi-serious ninety-minute game, the same format as imminent November tournament. Nick nished ahead 6 – 2. For the rest of the games there were no recorded scores. Everybody was having too much fun. Sally Adams and Stuart Craig played ricochet on Tuesday with Stuart playing well to win 12 – 6. Stuart followed this up on Sunday to team up with Helen Andrews to post an admirable win 9 – 8 against Wallace who has been in ne form recently. Sarah Widin played Vince Carbery in a game of singles where Vince, despite showing glimpses of good play, went down 9 – 13. Donna Manning and Dianne Horsman played an instructive eleven-all draw on lawn 2 while on the same lawn, Nick and Ken were languishing on six all with a half hour to go when Nick left the door open for Ken to go to the peg with yellow for a ten break and a nal result of 16 – 6. Do you want to play croquet? Croquet provides non-strenuous exercise and an effective low-intensity workout. When you join your local croquet club you will become part of an Australia wide sporting body of around 9000 members. Croquet can be played at any age and is a great way to socialise while enjoying low impact outdoor exercise. It combines the intellectual challenge of a game like chess with physical activity requiring skills such as precision and a soft touch to be successful.
