Joyce Newton Legacy lives on in Beerwah State High School Student
Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP has announced the 2023 Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary winner as Year 12 Beerwah Stage High School student, Nikita Emhofer.
Miss Emhofer has been crowned as this year’s winner after providing a written application and impressing both Mr Powell and the late Mrs Newton’s daughter, Jen Tunley, in an interview. She demonstrated a very high level of academic achievement, ambition and community involvement.
her plans for the future. Her parents and school should also take a bow,” said Mr Powell.
Nikita will now receive a $1,000 voucher to spend at Concept IT in Maleny, as well as dinner for her and her family and acknowledgement of her achievement in Queensland Parliament.
But this year, the wins don’t stop there. Andrew and Jen have decided to award two runners up prizes to Kelly Schofield from Maleny State High School and Nina Taylor from St Columban’s College.
“The competition was that close, the Newton family wanted to recognise more applicants through the awarding a two special $500 vouchers to Kelly and Nina,” said Mr Powell.
“In their interviews, both Kelly and Nina embodied a real community spirit that I know mum would have been proud of,” said Mrs Tunley.
“And to the other applicants who didn’t quite succeed this year, thank you for your efforts. Each of you are amazing. It was our immense pleasure to get to know you through the process. And our future is safe in your hands,” concluded Mr Powell.
“Nikita really impressed us with her breadth of experience, desire to help the community and understanding of the magnitude of mum’s contribution to society,” said Mrs Tunley.
“The decision was especially close, but Nikita inched out on top after her interview. She should be incredibly proud of her achievements to date, and

Telstra Caught short at Maleny Show and Maleny Wood Expo
The 2023 Maleny Show and Maleny Wood Expo along with Knitfest and the Muscle on the Mountain day all suffered at the hands. of Telstra as recent paralysing outages cost vendors tens of thousands of dollars during upgrades to the Maleny phone network. Many local businesses were also severely impacted having to operate without phone and EFTPOS facilities for the same duration.
Those upgrades, which cut services to customers for around two weeks, were aimed at improving capacity and 5G services in the Maleny Telstra exchange area.
Local Federal Member for Fisher said, “Reception in the hinterland was historically challenging and I hope that federal regulations could increase coverage, not just capacity”.
Maleny Commerce president, Spencer Shaw, said. “We went two weeks without service, which came after poor service anyway, to take away two weeks is debilitating.”
A Telstra spokesperson said the Telstra are now talking with the Show Society about using a wi-fi network that’s dedicated to vendors so that this does

QCWA Maleny
Did you know that with three Regions, twenty Divisions and over two hundred and forty Branches, the QCWA is the largest and most widespread women’s organisation in Queensland. Since 1922, the QCWA has been about women from all over Queensland coming together for many different reasons, whether it is about meeting new people, making new friends, learning new skills or getting involved in the community.
Whatever the reason, it is friendship and the overall desire to help others that has banded the women of this organisation together. Their vision is simple: for the women of Queensland to come together to support communities, while celebrating their interests and forging friendships in a respectful and caring environment.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny
Our 30th birthday is now less than two weeks away on the 30th of July. Fun is to be had by all, young and old.
There was a lot of activity on the lawn this week. Ricochet players made hay in the good weather to play two entertaining games on Tuesday. Dianne Horsman and Priscilla Vickers must have considerably shorter nails after their encounter which Dianne won 12 – 11; while Sally Adams lost honourably to Stuart Craig 4 -8.
Wednesday was the day of our last round of the Lochwood competition. Chris Borlase and Ken Barker played Colin Harris and Lance Turner from Coolum club. Chris lost his game against Lance 17 – 26 while Ken won a scratchy game against Colin 12 – 11. The doubles was triumph of the absurd where easy shots and hoops were missed regularly. The home team went down 9 – 24, losing the rubber 1 –2.
Social play on Sunday had Val Carbery and Stuart losing to Wallace Roy 6 – 10. Vince Carbery and Ken beat Lynette Evans and Dianne 18 – 11.
Donna Manning and Chris played in the Queensland Open at McIlwraith from the 14th to the 16th. Donna won 2 from 4 in the plate to finish 3rd behind Bruce Ford (Stephens) and Wade Hart (Eildon) 1st. Chris went a step further winning the second tier behind the championship from Heather Knight (Stephens). Mike Giddings (Ballina) won the Championship beating Mark Kobelt (Tumby Bay S.A.) in the final.
The attached photo shows Chris and Donna chilling out at home as they prepare for the tournament, one of the major events in the Queensland calendar with Nick Cram in the background observing.

Association Croquet
Association Croquet is a tactical game, usually between two players, consisting of running six hoops in order with two balls, clockwise first and then anti-clockwise, and finally hitting the central peg. It is played in a lawn measuring 35yards by 28 yards. The running of a hoop and hitting of the peg scores one point. The maximum score is, therefore, 26 points. Six hoops twice by two balls plus the pegging out.
