What’s in a Name? Reesville The Reesville area was all once known as Howells Knob, as nearby neighbours refused to acknowledge Rees as being the first to dwell in the district. Howells Knob, the highest point in Caloundra City, was originally named after the Howell brothers, who selected land on which this viewpoint is found.

Reesville was later named by the Landsborough Shire Council in 1923, in honour of Henry Oliver Rees, who had emigrated to Australia in 1883 and established his property 'Caerleon' at Reesville. Rees grew fruit and ran a dairy farm. He died on 5 September 1923. Caerleon means “fortress of the legion” in Welsh. The residence (pictured below circa 1910) on Reesville Road, was constructed from a single white beech tree, pit-sawn on the property owned by Mr Rees. The original roof shingles were replaced in 1915 when a detached kitchen was demolished from the building.
Mr Rees later built a second, larger home on his property and this was rented for over 30 years until it finally passed from Rees family ownership. Thanks to Sunshine Coast Council Heritage Dept. for this story. Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Inc

In 1929 It was decided that a ladies' rest room be provided for in the Improvements to the hall. This hall burnt down in May 1951 and another new hall was built on the site and opened in October, 1957. The fire started in Freeleagus’ Café & Bakery (previously McLean's Café, est. 1915, later Shaw & Sons Cafe) early in the morning and spread quickly to the community hall next door. At that time there was no fire brigade in the district, but the Maleny Fire Brigade was formed not long after this fire event. A bucket brigade was formed and most of the furniture from the

Mr Freeleagus threw his café takings in a bag, from the top veranda of the building while the fire was burning and was caught by someone in the crowd but apparently, the money was never seen again. Andrew McLean had leased the café out from approximately 1939. Photo Above : Crowd in Maple Street outside the Maleny School of Arts hall, ca 1920s
