Take care in this period of extreme heat!!! Beerwah Fire re-ignites

This week is the beginning of the September school holidays and it is to come at the same time as temperatures are to rise.

In some areas it is expected be up to 10 degrees higher than average. This midweek burst of extreme heat will be accompanied by heightened fire risks.

We have already seen evidence of the heightened fire risk as on September 14th at about 2p.m. the Queensland Fire Service put out an evacuation warning for the area around Mawsons Road and Holt Road Beerwah.

To Stay informed:

- Follow QFES on Facebook and Twitter.

- Listen to your local radio station.

A QFES spokesman described the fire as a “large grass fire that is very fast moving.” It was about 2km in size and said 15 crews were battling the blaze.

Water bombing planes were also used to fight the bushfire at Beerwah on Sunday.

We are now in an El Nino situation so there are drier than normal conditions accompanying that and with the higher temperatures it is very difficult to control a fire once it gets going.

As at 12:41pm on Monday, 18th September 2023 there was still a stay informed warning associated with this fire.

A police spokesperson t said properties between Steve Irwin Way, Irwin Rd, Mawsons Rd and the Bruce

Hwy, including Holt Rd, should prepare to leave at very short notice as the fire had broken containment lines and was heading in a westerly direction towards Beerwah.

Burys Road and Mawsons

Road would be closed, and delays were expected on the Bruce Highway. As of 5pm Monday 18th September the fire had burned through 350ha and was “contained but not controlled” with “Fire continuing to help ground crews.

Australia Zoo borders on the alert zone. A Zoo spokesperson said that they have a well established fire protocol, extensive equipment, and trained personnel on alert at Australia Zoo.

Emergency Service personnel are just trying to get the fire under control, but the wind keeps changing taking it in another direction. Rural fire crews along

with HQPlantations and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service staff will continue to monitor the blaze throughout the coming week as a high fire danger period was predicted for Wednesday, September 20 and Thursday September 21st. The fire could continue to burn for several days.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said the risk of bushfires will continue increasing and predicts the fires will move from central to south-eastern Queensland across the week as temperatures soar. The BOM expects temperatures to be more than 10 degrees above average for September, with maximums in the mid-30s

This is the first of what is expected to be a number of fires through this season and we expect to have an elevated fire risk season starting from the end of October all the way through summer.

Dry air, westerly winds and warm temperatures are the main reason behind the increased fire danger, with no rainfall on the horizon.

This fire shows that fires can happen close to all our homes and it is important to be “Fire Ready” so that action can be taken quickly to ensure the safety of families.

People can stay prepared by ensuring gutters around the home are cleaned regularly and the grass has been mowed and keep up to date through local radio and official Emergency Services social media.

Blackall Range Woodies “Weekend of Wood”

The BRWG more commonly known as “The Blackall Range Woodies”, open their secretive little compound located at the Montville Sports Ground, three (3) kilometres from Montville toward Maleny for their annual “Wonderful Weekend of Wood”, on the weekend of 30th September to the 1st October, 2023.

So, as you cruise through our beautiful Hinterland, with the wind in your hair, relaxed after your Montville stop, a happy bunch of kids in the back, begging you to stop at the “Woodies”, uttering those often heard squeals of delight “Are we there yet, are we there yet?” etc.

This is your opportunity to explore the range of Cheese, Bread and Carving boards far removed in style and craftsmanship from the drab, dull and boring standard shop version, real talking points for your next family get together. And just look at the range and sizes of the Charcuterie boards. Our famous jewellery maker will also be there to delight Mom or that very “Special Other” in your life.

Just remember that date “30th Sept to 1 Oct, 2023 at 230 – 238 Balmoral Road ,Montville”.

If you have an interest in the Blackall Range Woodies or would like to visit their shed or to make a start at joining our club, you can send an email to arrange a day and time to visit to: recruitment@blackallrangewoodies.org.au

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

Sally Adams and Priscilla Vickers were on the lawns on Tuesday morning, taking advantage of the beautiful weather, to play a hard-fought draw of 4 all against Stuart Craig and Richard Ward in an entertaining game of ricochet croquet. It’s heartening to see a hard-core group continuing with this form of the game.

On Thursday Sarah Widin returned from her holiday in style beating Nick Cram 13 – 7 while on the same lawn Wallace Roy scored 14 hoops against Kath Smith and Helen Andrews who scored one hoop. Ken Barker and Dianne Horsham continued their practice session against Donna Manning and Lynette Evans going down 10 – 14 in a match that was one-sided until tea when there was a bit of a fightback by the losing pair.

Donna and Lynette along with Ken and Dianne played in the alternate stroke mixed doubles competition at Caloundra over the weekend. The spread of wins across the nine teams who entered showed how difficult it was for players of mixed levels to adjust to partner styles and expectations. The general consensus was that it was an extremely enjoyable and worthwhile competition/training event for both the high and low players, but that the stress levels were astronomical. Bruce Fleming (Wynnum) and a former player for Australia with his partner Gordon Cooper (Bundaberg) won with a picket fence score of six wins from six. Nobody else came close.
