Beersheba Day Training - Event this Saturday (Continued from Page 1) The charge by the Australian Light Horse took place on October 31, 1917 during World War I. It is one of the more celebrated events in Australian military history. According to the Australian War Memorial, Beersheba anchored the right end of a defensive line that stretched all the way from the Turkish bastion of Gaza on the Mediterranean coast. After two failed attempts to attack Gaza frontally, it was decided to outflank it by turning the Turkish line around Beersheba. The attack was launched at dawn on October 31 but by late afternoon the British 20 Corps had made little headway toward the town – and its vital wells. Lieutenant General Harry Chauvel, commanding the Desert Mounted Corps, then ordered the 4th Light Horse Brigade forward to attempt to secure the position. Brigadier William Grant responded by ordering light horseman of the 4th and 12th Regiments to charge at the unwired Turkish trenches. Employing their bayonets as swords, the momentum of the surprise attack carried them through the Turkish defences. The water supplies were saved and more than 1,000 Turkish prisoners were taken. The fall of Beersheba thus opened the way for a general outflanking of the Gaza-Beersheba Line. After severe fighting, Turkish forces abandoned Gaza on November 6 and began their withdrawal into Palestine. The Name Behind Gardners Falls

Here is another part of Maleny’s history brought to you courtesy of the Maleny Historical Society, as written in 2019 by Jim Gardner (of Toorbul) 75 years old grandson of William Francis Gardner. "William Francis Gardner of North Maleny, a farmer, born in England 1871, bought land from Albert and Ernest Pattemore, two sons of J R Pattemore. This land was known as “Ellerslie Estate”. William spent 16 years clearing the land and made three farms, one of which he worked himself with family, the other two he employed share farmers. W J Gardner died in Dec 1936. The family kept the estate until 1962 when it was sold. Another brother came out from England with W F Gardner but never came to Maleny. He stayed in Sydney. William Francis Gardner married Gertrude Barnes who was born in Australia. They had 6 children; Leslie, May, Olive, Ivy, Eddie, Vera. All now deceased.

known if any cheese was made. The building stood for many years and was still there when the farms were sold. Gardeners Falls were named after W F Gardner. The farms from Reynolds Crossing down to Beacom’s farm Balmoral had the Obi Obi Creek as the boundary from farms on the opposite side of the creek.”

The girls lived in Maleny for 21 years. Les was killed in WW1. May married Alex Fleming, who was Chairman of the Landsborough Shire Council from 1945 - 1955. In 1936 Eddie Gardner bought a farm in Conondale, also Harry Lyon's cream runs from Conondale to Maleny Butter Factory. “Ellerslie Estate” had an ant bed tennis court at the main house on which the family and friends had a great time. The big highlight was a trip to Brisbane. This involved rising early, doing the morning milking, riding through the scrub, now known as “Gardeners Lane down to Gardeners Falls” then on to Landsborough. It was an all day trip, staying the night at Mrs Trail’s Guest House, catching the train next morning. Neighbours looked after the milking until they came back. William Francis Gardener built a cheese factory on the property “Ellerslie” and brought out a cheese maker from England. It is not

Historical Society Gets Dolled Up

There is buzz at the Pioneer Village. The Maleny Historical Society’s new and extensive Glenferna Doll Collection is coming together ready for their Open Day on 14th November, 2020. The Society’s volunteers, led by MHS’s Desley Malone, have steadily been unpacking the enormous collection of 600 hand-crafted porcelain dolls gifted to the Society by the doll artisan Louise Cogzell.

belonged to Jane (Trail) Hankinson. Jane, whose Grandmother was Jane Dunlop (first white woman to to live on the Range) was born in 1885. Her parents were George and Jane (Dunlop) Trail.

"It took weeks to prepare them for their journey from Redland Bay” said Desley Malone “And we are in awe at how different and beautiful they are. They depict cultures of the world. The new cabinets are almost full and we’re down to the last few boxes left to unpack. What a surprise we have in store for the public on Nov 14 - be prepared to be amazed, they’re truly gorgeous!”.

Jane went to the Blackall Range School (later the Wootha School), married George Hankinson in 1903 and they had 3 children, Ted, Dave and Thelma. After Thelma’s death, the doll was kept by her granddaughter, Adele (Hankinson) McLachlan who passed away recently.

The Historical Society has a doll with wonderful provenance to Maleny’s history in their collection, as it

Maleny into the Semi Finals!

The Maleny Chamber of Commerce has advised that Maleny’s Local Gift Card design has won the seventh pool competition promoted by Why Leave Town Promotions. This means that the Maleny design is now in the semifinals for the competition. This follows a fantastic display of online support from Malenyites for Maleny’s Local Gift Card design being catapulted into the semis finals!

What a contest! Organisers of the National competition, Why Leave Town Promotions, said “This was most exciting round yet. We swapped leaders a couple of times, had a three-way contest for a while before Merriwa and Maleny charged to the lead. Neither backed down, but ultimately Maleny was too strong. Maleny, you're off to the semi finals!”. This is great news for local business and for Maleny Commerce, who are the local initiators and promoters of the Maleny Gift Card.

Don’t Worry Be Happy Enjoy the day!

Maleny Commerce thanks everyone for their fabulous support so far - and will keep everyone posted on the next link to vote again in the semi-finals - we can do this Maleny!

From Forest to Farmhouse - Building Fairview Maleny’s rich local heritage is the the winner the Sunshine Coast Council’s latest round of Heritage Levy grants, awarded last week – with nine local organisations set to share in more than $43,000 to help with collection care, exhibitions and public programs. Fairview, often referred to as Pattemore House, is a state heritage listed property built in 1907 in North Maleny and is leased by a dedicated volunteer group, the Friends of Pattemore House Inc. The group has received a $7421 grant for a storytelling project From Forest to Farmhouse Building Fairview. It is the story of the Pattemore brothers, who built Fairview using pit sawn White Beech, cut and dressed on the Maleny property, and how they, and other settlers in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, were able to convert a rainforest tree into a farmhouse. The story will be re-enacted using a pit saw and other early tools,

with the final product a digital story for display in Fairview. Friends of Pattemore House president Gail Denver said they were thrilled to receive the Heritage Levy Grant. “We’ll be working with a conservation architect and a local filmmaker to re-enact and film a demonstration of pitsawing and timber hand-planing, using tools authentic to the period,” Ms Denver said. “The film will become part of a permanent display at Fairview for our visitors to enjoy.” Heritage Levy Grants are an initiative funded by council’s Cultural Heritage Levy for not-forprofit museums and heritage organisations. Community Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said preserving and hopefully learning from our heritage through sharing our stories were key goals of the

Heritage Levy. “We have a network of heritage organisations across the Sunshine Coast that continue to work hard to understand, preserve and promote our history and create opportunities to share our region’s

cultural heritage through new exhibits and creative public programs,” Cr Baberowski said. “A huge thank you to our dedicated band of volunteers, who work in most of our local museums and community heritage organisations. They do a remarkable job of helping to preserve our Sunshine Coast heritage, both for current and future generations.” This round of Heritage Levy grant recipients include Nambour Museum, Friends of Pattemore House, Queensland Air Museum, Montville Village Association, Kenilworth and District Historical Association and Eudlo Public Hall and Recreation Grounds Association. Expansion of the Kenilworth Community Transport Service Gets the Go Ahead

More residents can now travel to more destinations on the Kenilworth Community Transport Service. A submission to expand the service was supported at last week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council (October 15). Cr David Law - Division 10 said the service will now be available to residents in Kenilworth as well as surrounding localities and will include trips to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce holds the Operator Accreditation for the service with the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Council supplies a fully insured 7-seater passenger vehicle and an allocation (of up to $2,000 to cover expenses) for the community to provide the service with volunteer drivers.

“The Kenilworth Community Transport Service has operated since June 2019 in partnership with council and the community, under the guidance of the Department of Transport and Main Roads,” Cr Law said. “The service was previously available only to residents living within a 6.5km radius of the Kenilworth Post Office and provided transport to Nambour, Maleny, Mapleton, Eumundi and Yandina for a flat fee of $8 one-way or return.

Story thanks to Sunshine Valley Gazette, with photo by Carol Gilmour: Kenilworth Community Transport Service volunteers.

At the request of the community, a submission was put to council to broaden the catchment area of the service and include the Sunshine Coast University Hospital as an approved destination. Today’s support of that submission will see residents of neighbouring Kenilworth localities, including Belli Park, Cambroon, Conondale, Coolabine, Eerwah Vale, Gheerulla, Kidaman Creek and Obi Obi now able to access the service. This broadening of the catchment area will increase the total number of properties who can access the service by more than a thousand - from 616 to 1676. Guests of registered users will also be able to access this service. The addition of trips to Sunshine Coast University Hospital will also provide residents in Hinterland communities with reliable transport to specialist medical services for $25 per person, one-way or return.” These changes to the Kenilworth Community Transport Service will take effect immediately. The Kenilworth Community Transport Service is run by volunteers, under the leadership of a Sub-Committee of the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce.
