The Friends of Pattemore House are delighted to be opening “Fairview” to the public again from this Saturday 26th March. Like many heritage centres, the property was closed to the public during the last Covid wave. However their volunteers have not been idle during the closure, teaming up with one of Australia’s most distinguished historians and surveyors, Bill Kitson, now retired and living at Witta with his Dutch-born wife of 53 years Angeline, Bill says no one is more astonished than he about how his life turned out. Creating a new display together called “Surveyors and Selectors”, Bill and the Museum of Lands Mapping and Surveying (Brisbane) generously donated several fascinating items to the Friends that have been crafted into the new display at Pattemore House, and linked to the original surveying and selection of the property in 1879. Well-known around the world, the many times awarded and accomplished surveyor, and retired senior curator of the Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying in Brisbane, Bill spent his early career surveying roads for the Department of Lands, Mapping and Surveying.

Bill Kitson eld by the Dept. as managers – but unable to face the prospect of being desk-bound, Bill instead convinced them to allow him to create a museum, in order to preserve the mapping and surveying history of Queensland. The original museum was established in the Lands Administration Building (now the Conrad Treasury Hotel) with Bill putting together one of the best collections of its type in the world. In 1987, the museum moved to the newly constructed Landcentre in Woolloongabba and in 1988 an agreement was signed with the Queensland Museum to become custodian of the collection, with the department providing staff to manage and run the museum. Recognised as an expert in his eld, Bill is in demand for talks and presentations; he estimates he’s done more than 2000 presentations all around Australia during the past 35 years. He talks passionately about early Queensland surveyors and how they played a role in shaping the state. From laying out towns to

Never one to keep still, he wrote a book with prominent historian Judith McKay - "Surveying Queensland 1839-1945, A Pictorial History” and now he’s on the cusp of publishing another on maritime surveyors. Zimbabwe Aid Fund Helping Farmers After nine holes of golf on the Maleny Golf course on a lovely sunny Sunday, a crowd of golfers and their families (numbering 160 in all) were then hosted for lunch, raf es, auctions and prizes at the MDSRC Clubhouse, raising funds for the Zimbabwe Aid Fund. Fund-raisers are organised by the large demographic of ex-pats living in Qld and NSW each year – the events usually with a sporting theme.

There are a number of institutions for the aged spread throughout Zimbabwe, most of them are dependent on various levels of external funding to survive. In addition to the retirement homes, there are many elderly Zimbabweans still living in their own homes that are also dependent on donated food parcels for their survival. Donors to ZAF are assured that all donated funds are accounted for. No money is paid over to Zimbabwean Government Agencies, International Aid Agencies or NGO’s. The activities of the Zimbabwe Aid Fund are audited annually by a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia.

Volunteers from MDSRC assisted at the function on Sunday and by all accounts, everyone had a great day of golf and fund-raising on the Maleny Precinct. The Zimbabwe Aid Fund (ZAF) was established in 2006 for the sole purpose of raising funds to support the pensioners in Zimbabwe. The plight of the elderly is one of the less publicised outcomes of Zimbabwe’s social, economic and political collapse.

In addition annual returns are made to the Fair Trade Departments of the NSW and Queensland State governments. The fund has no salaried employees, all work is done on a voluntary basis and has little or no administration expenses. Support, by way of donations and fundraisers is important to the survival of these elderly people. To nd out more, visit: https://www.zimbabweaidfund.org.au/ https://malenysportandrec.org.au/

Maleny Historical Memories with Desley Malone

On 14 March 1879 Joseph McCarthy selected the second selection in Maleny, Portion 1221, the rst being Isaac Burgess’s Portion 98 on 12th November 1878). McCarthy selected one square mile (640 acres or 259 ha) of Crown Lands in the area of Mountain View Rd and McCarthy’s Lookout. It was the only selection which crossed the Obi Creek. As the land was cleared, Joseph and his wife Maria commenced dairy farming. On their property was the rst school, Maleny Provisional State School, later renamed the Wootha State School and the rst post of ce (Mt Wootha). McCarthy held the meeting on his property to establish the Maleny Co-Operative Dairy Assn and became the rst chairman. Joseph and Maria had 10 children and they played a large part in the early development of the Maleny district. See more at this link: http://www.malenyhistoricalmemories.com/.../mccarthy

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Players on our lawns are enjoying the improved conditions with less rain, more sunshine and cooler weather – perfect playing conditions. We are enjoying the faster and improved lawns as a result of the hard work put in over summer. On Thursday afternoon 17/3, we had both lawns in play. On lawn one, there were two games played. Sarah Widin took on Ken Barker in a well contested match, with Sarah winning 18:11. The other match on lawn one was a doubles match with Val Carbery and Sally Adams battling Kath Smith and Lynette Evans. Kath and Lynette were the victors with a score of 10:6. On lawn two, Wallace Roy resoundingly won over Helen Uhlmann 10:3 in what turned out to be a great warm up to the Bray Pennants game coming up later in the week.

Sunday 20th saw our usual afternoon of play. With several of our usual players unavailable, things were quiet on the lawns but none the less enjoyable with perfect playing conditions. In a well contested singles game, Donna Manning defeated Val Carbery 15:12. At the same time, a doubles game was played with Helen Andrews and Nick Cram ending up victorious against Kath Smith and Vince Carbery 11:3. Wallace Roy convincingly won his singles game against Carole Atkinson 10:4 and Lynette Evans was also victorious in her singles match against Kerry Helmrich 12:8. The doubles match, in which Lynette and Helen Uhlmann took on Ricki Barrett and Sam Oaten, was hotly contested with Lynette and Helen ahead for most of the match until Sam made a run of ve hoops in the last 20 minutes on the match.
