ShelterBox is a worldwide charity that hand-delivers aid to families devastated by con ict or natural disaster, to give them safe shelter and the tools to rebuild communities. Right now, more than 104 million people around the world have been made homeless by natural disaster and con ict. We’re working to change this. The Rotary Club of Maleny, as part of Rotary International, is a global supporter of ShelterBox, and will be displaying an erected
ShelterBox on Maple Street between the Peace of Green Gallery, 38 Maple Street and Maleny Realty, 44 Maple Street on Sunday 27th June from 8:30AM. What aid does ShelterBox provide? Aid that is tailored to meets the needs of a community after a speci c disaster. The aid comes in the form of ShelterBoxes and ShelterKits. ShelterBoxes contain familysized tents specially designed to withstand the elements and provide people with temporary shelter until they
are able to start the process of rebuilding a home. ShelterKits contain all of the essential tools people need to start repairing and rebuilding homes straight away. . The kits and boxes also contain the items that help transform shelter into a home – like cooking sets, solar lights and activity sets for children.

The amount of $250,000 is enough to provide 1,000 families with essential shelter aid, including our ShelterKits, solar lights, water lters and mosquito nets — life-changing, life-saving aid that will help disaster-affected communities to begin the slow process of recovery. The crisp sunny winter days just lend themselves to walking, touring and enjoying scrumptious repasts in elegant surroundings. Pattemore House, with its spacious sunny verandas, will be open again this Saturday 26th June from 1 - 4 pm and as always, they will be serving up delicious home-made afternoon teas. Nestled at the entrance to the Maleny Community Precinct, why not work up an appetite by taking a brisk walk along the adjoining Heritage Trail rst? There’s plenty of parking at the Pattemore House car-park, from where you can also set off to see the Old Dairy Bails, then it’s down to historic Reynold’s Crossing on the Obi. Enjoy the cool forest trail that then snakes around the Maleny Golf course, walk on to Settlers Green and check out the new grove of heritage Camellias before returning back to Pattemore House for a tour of the 1907 pit-sawn farmhouse – and some afternoon tea. Jams and pickles, including seasonal lemon curd are available to purchase to stock your pantry. Pattermore House is situated at 15, Porters Lane, north Maleny. Just imagine the conversations within the Pattemore household around the dining table as seen below. One thing that you can guarantee that there was no watching of television during meal times.

held a Mixed Stableford 18 hole Competition with rst place going to Dennis Brown with 40 points, runner-up went to Annie Quarmby with 39 points on a count-back from Larry Fraley also with 39 points. Nearest to the Pin went to Jon Fairman on the 12th hole and Paul Viertel on the fth hole. Wednesday 16th June, 2021: The Ladies’ Monthly Medal Nett competition was held with rst place going to Toni Bishop with 68 nett on a countback from Narelle Thamm, also with 68 nett, runnerup went to Susanne Hardy with 69 nett and third place going to Maxine Gilbert with 70 nett on a count-back from Beth Glover, also with 70 nett. Maleny Golf Club Some History! It is not widely appreciated that “Royal” Maleny Golf Club can trace it’s origins back to the late 1920s on a site where Maleny High School now stands. The club was formed in 1929 and play commenced in 1930 Unfortunately the course closed during WW11and it became an airstrip.

Cream Carriers – Once the Lifeblood of Malen (By Judy Fredriksen courtesy Hinterland Times)
Cream, newspapers, bread, groceries, fuel, fertiliser, seed, pigs, calves, school kids – the cream truck carted everything. The trucks, which were usually a 2–5 tonne truck with a stock crate or canopy on the back, would deliver cream and kids to town in the morning, then pick up the supplies needed by the farmers, and deliver it all back to the farms the next day. There were around 250 farms supplying cream to the factory in the 1950s, according to Bob Hawkins, who worked in the of ce of the butter factory in Coral
Street for 16 years. “The majority of those farms had a share farmer,” says Bob, “which is different to today.” Chris Brooker, whose father Bert Brooker had the cream run from Curramore to Witta and Maleny, describes how the cream trucks operated: “After of oading the cream to the factory, the trucks would meander

newspaper to keep the dust out because they were all gravel roads. Some of the cream trucks also doubled as school buses. The Curramore carrier would, on cream days, pick up the children and the cream from the far end and stop at Schultz’s’ Road corner. The children would help him unload the cream and stash it under a bush (the bush is still there) then load planks for seats in the back of the truck, put a supposedly child-proof gate across the back, and the truck would become a ‘school bus’. The children would be delivered to the school, the truck would return to Schultz’s’ Road, and reverse the procedure – load up the cream and carry on. The children didn’t mind being in the back using the cans as seats as they were all farm kids.” And while the kids on the Curramore run didn’t mind helping to unload the cream cans, it was a different story for the kids on the Reesville run. Kevin Plucknett, whose family had a farm at Reesville, clearly remembers going to school in the back of a truck, replete with a stock crate, owned by Horace Jones. “Every Monday, he used to pick up pigs and take them to Landsborough. Tuesday morning, we all smelt like pigs! He just hosed it out a bit and we hopped in the next morning. It was a bit of excitement I s’pose for young people. In the 1950s and 1960s, they were the lifeblood of Maleny. They were the vital link between the isolated farming families at the end of dirt roads and the businesses in town that relied on the farmers for trade. These unpretentious workhorses were the cream trucks … and there’s a lot more to their story than you may realise.

And while that may have been alright for the boys, I personally think it’s no wonder that some of the girls found it a treat to ride in the front with the driver.” But things didn’t always go smoothly. If the farmers didn’t supply a hessian bag or billy can for their supplies, the shop keeper would place the goods inside the cream can. To the uninitiated, this probably sounds quite sensible – except – the cream cans had to be washed out before they left the factory and if there was still water in the bottom of the can, the farmer would end up with soggy bread! There were also other instances when the bread would end up soggy for a very different reason, and the farmer would nd himself in the wife’s bad books. Chris explains further: “Inside the bread sometimes, were bottles of rum, bottles of scotch, bottles of other stuff, which worked really well until the bottle broke within the can, and then the wife found out what was going on. And she’d get right up the carrier and the husband! And of course, they’d lose a loaf of bread.”

This may have been a tot of rum, in other cases it was a bottle of beer. “Christmas Day would be hilarious,” says Chris, “because the farmer would bring a bottle of beer out to the carrier, and you’d nd about 10 trucks lined up at the factory and none would be unloaded – they would all be sitting under the tree drinking their beer.” Of course, in our modern era of super-intensive regulations, none of these practices would be condoned. But I can’t help but admire the ingenuity of our forebears and how these customs shaped the traits of community cohesiveness, tolerance, casual resoluteness and most importantly – a sense of fun. So dear readers, let’s all raise a toast to Maleny’s pioneering cream truck drivers.
Despite the occasional mishap, the farmers were always grateful for the service given to them by the cream carriers, and would make a point of showing their appreciation at Christmas time. The farmer would often give the driver some Christmas cake

Feeding the Hungry Masses by Forest Heart’s Spencer Shaw It’s that time of year when the temperatures start to drop and our native wildlife need to start eating their ll to keep warm and hopefully put on a bit of fat to keep them going through the cooler months. Banksias, Grevilleas and Bottle Brushes are great nectar sources for Rainbow Lorikeets and Honey Eaters (and Noisy Mynah’s!) but many of the native birds of the hinterland and coast are fruit eaters and it’s great to plan food supplies for them too. A few that we have in-stock that fruit at this time of year include - Glossy Acronychia – Acronychia laevis is a much under rated shrub, distantly related to Citrus, with glossy foliage and a bushy form to between 2-4m. The sweet, aromatic fruit is used as a spice-fruit in cooking and in beverages, jams and desserts. Small star shaped white owers are followed by small purple fruit. Bollwara – Eupomatia laurina is another interesting local rainforest shrub, with glossy foliage, perfumed multipetaled white owers and a guava like fruit, that not surprisingly earns it its other name of Native Guava.

The dynamic duo of Haydyn Craven and Tony Keenan managed a great tie break set over some skilful opponents. All the men had a great day winning 4 of the 5 men’s doubles. Annie Quarmby and Paula Cudmore played consistently to achieve a 6/4 win in the ladies’ doubles. Thanks to our cheer squad of Anthony, Peter and Jim. Here's hoping your rehab Anthony continues to progress well in your favour and we see you just as strong on the court next year. Well done to both teams for a very competitive day of tennis. The Wednesday and Friday season has now ended. The teams will be back in action next season.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Thursday 17th of June was an exciting and busy day for our players, with a team of Gillian Bradley and Janelle Wilson playing in the Ricochet Pennants at Nambour as part of the Maleny Nambour team which took on a team from Headland Buderim.
against Val Carbery and Stuart Craig 5; Miggy Mackey teamed up with Wallace Roy against Helen Andrews and Lynette Evans to win 10 hoops to 8. Sarah Widen 19 played a cracking game against Janelle Wilson 4. In other club news, on Friday June 18 we enjoyed welcoming a group from Caloundra who came for a morning of golf croquet. Several rounds were played and a friendly cup of tea enjoyed at morning tea time. It was a great way to spend a beautiful sunny winter’s day here in Maleny on our lovely lawns!
In a close fought game, Gillian and Janelle 12 prevailed over Lesley Johnston and Pam Shepherd 11. In the singles match-ups, Bill Habner 19 won over Lesley 10, while Janelle 17 prevailed over Pam 13.
Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30. Meanwhile, that same day at Maleny, we had our regular social play day. Bev Sockhill and Sally Adams teamed up to make 9 hoops against a valiant Helen Andrews who made 6 hoops. Also, Lynette Evans and Sarah Widin 13 played Wallace Roy and Kath Smith 16 in a well fought match up. Ken Barker played Donna Manning in a very even game, with each making 6 hoops. Sunday 20th offered another brilliant, clear day for club croquet and a very pleasant afternoon was spend on our lawns with several games played. Nick Cram 16 defeated Kath Smith 9; Vince Carbery 7 won
RSL Dining is Back! Great news - the RSL’s famous "Digger's Dining" has now re-opened. It is warm inside so don’t worry about being cold! The bar is open on Fridays from 4:30 pm and ours is a family-friendly venue with great value family meals, we hope to see you!
