Maleny Pool Built for the Community By the Community 37 years ago, following an enormous community fund-raising effort to build a pool for the families of Maleny, a large crowd gathered for the official opening of the Maleny Swimming Pool. Built on land owned by Education Queensland, the highlight of that March 1983 day was seeing Olympian Tracey Wickham swim the first two laps of honour in the new pool!
In 1984 Maleny swimmers started competitive swimming and the Maleny Swimming Club Inc. was formed in 1992. In the pool grounds stands a granite rock bearing the wording “Built for the Community – By the Community”. But fast forward to 2020 and the Maleny Pool, like so many venues and organisations, has been impacted by the effects of the Corona virus. The resultant cancelling of fund-raising activities due to Covid restrictions meant that a real crisis was reached last
month, as the Maleny Swim Club committee, who operate the pool under lease from the Sunshine Coast Council, were not in the financial position to offer a contract to a coach/manager for the upcoming summer season. President of Maleny Swimming Club Gail Ring explained. "The annual council grant does not fully cover the coach/managers contract, so club fund raising is what we do each year for the remaining payment to the coach, our share of electricity, our share of servicing of heat pumps, any breakdowns etc. and now because of additional Covid safety requirements, we also need to pay the coach/manager an extra payment towards the cleaning fee.”
With their 2020 fund-raising opportunities cancelled at community events such as the Maleny Show, and with the annual

Council funding not due for release until January 2021, the committee reached out to Cr Winston Johnston and local MP Andrew Powell to intervene, making it clear that without help, there would be no pool operating for the public this summer. Many Maleny locals reacted to the bad news, also contacting both representatives. Andrew Powell moved quickly and in a statement said "Thank you to everyone who has written to me over the last week, bringing to my attention the Maleny Pool. Your community spirit in Maleny never ceases to amaze me! I have worked with the school principal as well as the Department of Education to waive fees, undertake maintenance and prepare the pool for our warm seasons which are fast approaching. Councillor Winston Johnston and I have worked to make the regular operating payments to the Swimming Club upfront rather than arrears. As a result, the club will shortly be advertising for a pool manager and it shouldn't be long before the pool is open again.” Cr Johnston https://malenysportandrec.org.au/

Maleny Pool (Cont from Page 1) also commented, saying "Andrew Powell and myself have become aware of the delay in opening the Maleny Swimming Pool. I would like to thank the many residents who have contacted us. So far, Andrew has succeeded in getting the Department of Education (who own the pool) to agree to urgent maintenance and to assist the Swimming Club with some funding aspects. In addition I have asked Council to assist by paying this year’s grants for maintenance and operational costs in advance, instead of in arrears. Apparently Council Officers have been in consultation with the pool committee. Hopefully these timely actions assist with the early opening of our town pool.” Maleny families can thank the hundreds of volunteers who have served on the pool committee to keep the pool open each year since it first opened. It takes a huge commitment from all involved and Gail Ring went on to say "We have worked tirelessly to improve the pool enclosure over the past years, with new seating, umbrellas, solar, clubhouse improvements, swimming equipment. The list never fades it just increases, as let's face it, it is an ageing pool and there is always extra money that is required. We can now see the previous funding model which was an old one, needs to be reviewed, as the committee being all volunteers have jobs of their own and do not need this pressure year after year. I feel the community need to realise that without the Swimming Club there would possibly be no community pool open to them, school swimming would be all that is available. Hopefully this week we will have some funds into our account so we can begin the agonising search for a new suitable coach and manager.” We are sure that the community agrees, and thanks to these efforts, can look forward to being able to use the pool again this summer. Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston Skipper Musk Lookout at Bald Knob - Update Thanks to the great work of the Built Infrastructure Team, Skipper Musk Lookout at Bald Knob has been resurfaced with extra car parking now provided. There is line marking to the sealed area and shrub planting on the eastern embankment will be completed soon. Congratulations to every person involved, this is a valuable tourist facility, which our community can be proud of. Well done. The lookout got its name as it was where Mrs Skipper & Mrs Daisy Musk ran a tea house not far from the lookout for the bullock drivers as they got to the top of the range. Pictures are before and after works - it’s also great to have the spectacular views of the coast back!

State Government Funding for Maleny Show Society Local shows across the state will continue to delight, entertain and connect communities with 130 show societies and associations receiving more than $2.1 million from the Queensland Government’s Show Societies Grants Program, to help conduct their annual show. Minister for Local Government Stirling Hinchliffe said the importance of the local show will be even greater in 2021, helping Queensland communities unite and recover from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Across the region, the grants will assist Show Societies including: • Eumundi Park Recreation & Showgrounds Association $6,770 • Kenilworth Show and Rodeo Sub-Committee - $8,431 • Maleny Show Society - $12,326 • Noosa A H & I Society $14,419 • Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show Society - $38,254 • Woodford A P & I Assn Inc $7,663 The Show Societies Grants Program provides financial support for operating costs associated with conducting annual agricultural shows, and costs towards the construction and maintenance of show-ground assets.

Some New South Wales areas open to Queensland As from October 1st some areas of New South Wales will again be open to Queensland. Those areas include the Byron, Ballina, Lismore, Richmond Valley, and Glenn Innes. Once again Queensland residents will be allowed to travel to those regions and visa versa as there have been no new cases of Covid from those areas for the past 14 days.
Western Queensland have had good rain
A decision is pending to lift restrictions in Nursing homes and hospitals. It is anticipated that visitors will be allowed to return to aged care, hospital and disability accommodation services later this week.
A weather system is presently making its way from south of the border and hitting the Gold Coast and continuing up the coast, with potential to hit the Sunshine Coast very late Tuesday.
Queensland reopens its borders to the Australian Capitol Territory as of Friday, September 25.

Apex on the Front Foot
Another Saturday meant another concrete project for the members of the Apex Club of Maleny. Here they are helping the Maleny Cricket Club to fill in concrete to the practice pitches at the facilities on the Maleny Showgrounds. The Maleny Cricket Club sincerely thanks the Maleny Apex lads and Weston Earthmoving for these much needed renovations to their training nets.

Collard’s Curse
How Kikuyu Grass was Introduced to the Range
Here’s another interesting article from the archives of the Maleny Historical Society. "The effects of drought on the stock-sustaining capacity of the softer grasses were most marked and the toll of the 1919 drought were long remembered.
Immediately following this drought, the late Alfred Collard introduced kikuyu grass (pennisetum clandestinum) a native of South Africa. It was from the original planting in Australia at the Wollingbar Experiment Farm. He brought 8 runners of Kikuyu grass with him and thus began Maleny’s and the Dairy Industry’s long association with what became known by those with gardens or cultivations the doubtful distinction of being called “Collard’s Curse” – through its habit of over-running cultivation areas, which suited it
ideally on account of the looser soil.
However it helped the farmers survive many a dry period. Its popularity spread and eventually displaced the the cultivation of cow cane for winter feeding, on account of its thick coverage, and it greatly reduced the incidence of losses via drought, through its blanketing effect on the surface of the ground and the amount of roughage it provides. As the farms became more established, the surface stone, mainly of basaltic origin, was gathered to allow for more intensive pasture management, and the working of renovation implements over the pastures which became ‘root-bound” through carrying too heavy a plant population.
The photos here shows Edgar and Edward Lawley cutting cane to feed their cows in 1916. Fred Porter recorded that sugar cane was the fi rst crop planted on the range, “bullock fodder” as it was called by Francis Dunlop. Then Buffalo couch grass was introduced. Paspalum arrived about 1903 and Rhodes grass soon after. There
The introduction of soft English grasses to provide winter grazing was tried with a mature of success in favourable conditions. The mixture consisted of mainly Rye grasses, Cocksfoot, white Dutch clover, and red clover to provide summer grazing. Various trials with artificial fertilisers indicated the nitrogen deficiency of the area but the response to super-phosphate was not as marked as in other areas. Liming corrected the high acidity of the soil to some extent and led to better growth. An increasing interest is being taken in the application of lime and artificial fertilisers and it may well become an accepted part of normal farm practice.”
was a severe drought in 1919 and in the early 1920s, Alfred Collard introduced the Kikuyu grass that proved to be so hardy and nutritious for cattle. The Howard tractor (also pictured) belonged to Gerald Thomasson, and is believed to be one of the first tractors on the Maleny Range. Farmers used to plant winter crops for their farm animals, but after kikuyu was introduced, horse teams found it difficult to plough. Around Division 5 with Councillor Winston Johnston
“War on Weeds”
Due to their distinctive new foliage and flowers, spring is the perfect time to highlight the spread of invasive weeds all over the Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast. Maleny local, Jeanette Nobes, has been a tireless worker and advocate for the control and eradication of invasive weeds. Regrettably Council and Main Roads have not listened to her expert advice and consequently, we find ourselves in this current invasive weed mess. Also regrettably, many new and even long term residents think that invasive weed trees like camphor laurel, narrow/broad leaf privets and Chinese celtis (elm) are lovely trees. Nothing could be further from the truth.
They are not called invasive weeds because they are good for our environment, they are called that because they rapidly destroy our environment, scenic views, valuable prime agricultural land, waterways and some species also pose a serious annual health risk to sufferers of hay fever and asthma.

In addition, other smaller invasive weeds are spreading exponentially in the Hinterland. Those weeds include, morning glory, giant rats tail, mist weed, giant devils fig, groundsel, Japanese sunflower, madeira vine, cats claw creeper,
red lantana and numerous others. Whilst some of these invasive weeds may seem attractive or pretty flowering shrubs, those who understand the nature of these plants, detest them because of the damage they do to our natural environment as well as the annual cost of control to both farmers and the community in general. In addition they all rapidly take over local native plant species and fauna habitat.
Japanese Sunflowers To fully understand why they are a problem, consider this old factual adage regarding weeds, “One years seed is seven years weeds”. This is because their seed can lay dormant in the ground for up to seven years before germination. Many environmentally minded people talk about sustainability, when discussing our natural environment. I strongly support sustainability but ask, “What is sustainable about pouring chemicals upon our land, year after year, in an endeavour to control the spread of invasive weeds?” The best way to control weed species and create a sustainable environment for future generations, is to eliminate the host plants and through persistence and hard work, pull

out the newly germinated plants before they flower to repeat the cycle of another seven years of germination and continual hard work. Since elected to Council in April, I have endeavoured to educate other Councillors and Bio-security Staff, in an endeavour to lift the profile of invasive weeds and obtain increased focus and spending on weed control. However unless property owners, our State Government and all dedicated environmental community members understand the magnitude of the problem and work with Council to control and eliminate all invasive weeds, then we are doomed to failure and the Hinterland will rapidly become a weed infested wasteland, lacking in agricultural production, visual amenity and habitat for much of our native flora and fauna. This is a call to arms for all residents to support my efforts to get all levels of Government to act before it is too late. You can assist by demanding that our Council and State Government act now by allocating sufficient funding to control this urgent environmental and economic issue. Winston Johnston. With Covid restrictions easing, community groups can once more hire the MDSRC Clubhouse for functions, events, meetings, presentations or club socials. The MDSRC Clubhouse on Maleny Sports Park is available for regular or casual hire by MDSRC member clubs and community organisations.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Donna Manning played in the Queensland Women’s Championship which was played at Toombul on the weekend of the twelfth and thirteenth. She played well against strong opponents. The tournament was won by Yuni Rowell (Burleigh Heads Palm Beach club). Francesca de Wytt from Windsor club celebrated her birthday at the croquet lawns on Wednesday. Sarah Widin and Francesca played against Wallace Roy and Priscilla Vickers winning 10 –8. Greg Bury played Vince Carbery two games winning both, the first a game of association and the second a one ball each game. Greg, the national coach for association croquet, was in

The new uniforms have arrived.
