Volunteers Recognised

There was a buzz in the air last Friday when Andrew Powell invited some of the district’s outstanding volunteers to morning tea at the Maleny Community Centre.

Nominated by their organisations, the main event was the presentation of awards by Andrew that recognised the contributions made by so many thought the year, working as volunteers in a wide array of organisations. Said Andrew "Our community is full of volunteers who give up their time to help individuals or community groups in need. It might be knitting clothes for sick kids, providing food deliveries for the elderly, cooking snags on the bbq for a local sporting group or even helping out in a school classroom with reading.

Without volunteers assisting in our community, many Glass House organisations and sporting groups just wouldn’t exist, so the Volunteer Awards are my opportunity to show them how much we appreciate their help.”

Congratulations to everyone who received an Award, summed up by Maleny Blackall Range Lion's President Helen Johnston; "Without the support of volunteers, communities would not have facilities provided for them nor the workers to keep communities alive and flourishing.”

We could not agree more - thank you to everyone who volunteers in our beautiful community!

You “Woodn’t" Want to Miss Santa's Shop!

This Saturday and Sunday 26 & 27 November from 9 am to 4 pm, the Montville Woodies are having their annual Santa Shop Sale at its sheds at Montville Sportsground, 230 – 238 Balmoral Road, Montville.

The Blackall Range Woodworking Guild Inc (known as the Montville Woodies) have been busy making wooden bowls, boxes, carvings, coffee tables, signs, toys, and an array of interesting and useful articles which are ideal for Christmas presents.

Every year Woodies members make and donate lots of wooden toys to the Salvos for its annual Christmas Toy Appeal for distribution to less fortunate children at Christmas time.

The Woodies respect and protect the environment, as all the timber used by the Woodies has cut from trees donated and is recycled environmentally instead of it being burned. Now visitors can see and buy some of the handiwork handmade by members and you’ll find:

Displays and sale of woodwork made by members

Demonstrations of woodworking equipment at set times

Kumiko demonstration - a Japanese art form, involving making screens out of small accurately cut pieces of timber, forming repeating patterns.

Free car-parking for an hour

Free entry to the work-sheds

Maleny Historical Memories

with Desley Malone

The first bridge over the Obi was a log footbridge built in 1907. This was replaced the following year with a bridge that was 47 feet long, 9 feet wide and 10 feet above low water. This bridge washed away and was replaced soon after.

The Maleny Hotel which is seen in the background of both photos stands on the eastern side of the Obi Obi Creek bank, above flood level.

Wonder how many pedestrians had a tumble into the Obi on the way home…..photos courtesy the Dave Hankinson Collection.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

Lynette Evans, Kath Smith, Dianne Horsman, and Sally Adams decided to dip their toes into the mysterious world of ricochet croquet after the stresses and strains of our November tournament. Though the rules are very similar to association croquet many players find the game very different once they are playing it.

Lynette was heard on at least one occasion bemoaning being unable to pick up the ball.

Lynette and Kath teamed up to beat Dianne and Sally 15 - 9 in a game full of advice and laughs.

The attached photo shows Lynette being presented with the fourth division shield which she won in the November tournament.

Donna Manning and Nick Cram played a game against Ken Barker in which all three played some good turns, however Nick’s came at the right time, just before close of play, with a neat, controlled break to push his team ahead 11 – 9.

With storms predicted in the afternoon keeping many players away, Sarah Widin and Kath played a game of doubles against Wallace Roy and Dianne on Sunday losing a close encounter to them 11 – 12.

Donna Manning and Bill Habner (Nambour) played as a team in the Queensland Open Doubles tournament at Toombul, acquitting themselves well. Bill has teamed up with Maleny players on several occasions for pennants competitions. Lindsay David (Twin Rivers) and Kathie Grant (Southport) won the tournament just two wins ahead of Donna and Bill.

Attached Photo: Sarah Widin, club president, presenting the fourth division shield to Lynette Evans. In 1991 the Maleny Croquet Club was formed and a piece of ground became available for their use at the Maleny Showgrounds and in December 1992

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 1
