Maleny Show to Feature Guy McLean!

That’s right, horseman extraordinaire Guy McLean is coming to the Maleny Show on Saturday 3rd June. Guy truly believes that the best tools in horsemanship are ‘Knowledge, Compassion, Patience and Imagination” and in using these, many a fine partnership has been formed.

Since 1999, Guy and his equine team (led by Nugget for 12 years) performed all over Australia at every Major Equine event or agricultural show.

In 2002 and 2006 Guy received the great honour of being named an official ‘Ambassador of the Outback’ and through his performances of Horsemanship, bush poetry and whip cracking he has helped to keep the traditions of the bush and the true Aussie Stockman, alive.

Maleny Agricultural Show 100 Years Commemorative Book!

What a collector’s item this book will be - don’t miss out on getting your copy of this treasure. A lot of work has gone into the publication by writer Judy Fredriksen and Maleny’s Show Society families and community to make this an invaluable read and historical resource.

Compiled from old news articles and interviews with show stalwarts, the commemorative book revisits the determination and grit of the town’s pioneers and how, united by passion and vision, they have consistently overcome the hurdles of inclement weather, war, drought and disease.

Scattered throughout are amusing anecdotes about local characters, including one who is rumoured to haunt the pavilion! Including so many snippets and tales over the show’s long historywith a 100-year mystery solved. Ernie Lawley, Alex Bryce and another unknown person put in £10 each to kick start the show in 1922. Finally the identity of that mysterious third person is revealed!

Do you know what years there was no Maleny Show and do you know the reasons that there was no show in those years. Check out this book to find out.

The Maleny Show Society’s 100 year commemorative book will be available for purchase in the week leading up to the Show at the Show office at the Showgrounds from Monday 29th May. It can also be purchased at the Show at the old fish and chip booth, next to the pavilion.

The book costs just $29.95, and will be available at the 2023 Maleny Show from the secretary’s office. EFTPOS facilities will be available cash sales too.

The first Maleny Agricultural Show was held in 1923. It rained so much that it was reported there were more cattle (280) than spectators in attendance. All enquiries about the book to

Maleny Show to Feature Guy McLean!

(Continued from Page 1)

In 2005 Guy was the inaugural winner of ‘Equitana’s’, ‘Way of the Horse’ young horse starting competition and it was the methods he learnt in the Queensland bush under the watchful eye of many a young horse that brought him victory.

Guy and his horse’s have achieved national acclaim in Australia over the past 15 years and his talented horses (especially Nugget) have had their names chanted in front of 20 000 people at Royal shows such as Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide shows, as well as Guy’s favourite, The Brisbane Ekka, where for the last nine years Guy and his team have performed in front of well over a million people.

Guy has been acclaimed by his fans and Australian dignitaries alike as a National treasure and Living Legend and although this humble Australian still blushes at such remarks, it is the kind words and stories of inspiration that Guy evokes that keeps him in the frame of mind to succeed and continue to spread his message.

Although the calling of international work has made Guy step away from his beloved homeland for a while, Australia will always be his home and where his heart resides and yet wherever there are wonderful horses and crowds to entertain and educate, Guy will feel at home.

Don’t Miss Bluey and Bingo!

You’re not going to believe who is coming to the Maleny Show!! Dogs are out of the bag now! Its BLUEY AND BINGO - appearing LIVE at the Maleny Show!

Witta Tennis News

DATE CLAIMER: Witta Tennis Club Tournament Sunday 25 June

Whistlers played at Witta against Nambour ZTA Jets. Weather was nice even though it was a bit cold but the sun was out. We had a very enjoyable tennis match with good company and getting to know the new team. We had a good win to finish the day. Score was 48-10 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Maree Hooley, Aki Lepper and Cindy Harris.

Chilly winds heralded the start to a very competitive match between Witta Wompoos and Nambas in the Sunshine Coast veterans competition on May 21st. Fortunately the Nambas courts were protected and the conditions were pleasant throughout the afternoon. The Witta team began well, leading 3 sets to 1 after 4 matches and 5 sets to 3 after the lady’s doubles. The Nambas team fought well to even the sets at 5 all with the last two mixed doubles to be played. Andrew Blowes and Brenda Warner successfully won their match 6/1 and Jim and Paula Cudmore came through with a 6/3 win to complete the win 7 sets 57 games to 5 sets 46 games. Many thanks to the team of Tony Keenan, Haydyn Craven, Andrew Blowes, Jim and Paula Cudmore and well done to our player of the day Brenda Warner who won all 4 doubles matches. Jim also played well

winning 3 out of his 4 matches on the day. Thanks to Nambas for a fun day’s tennis.

The Wikings travelled to Gympie to host Murgon in the latest round of Division 2 Vets tennis. After a wild and windy morning, the weather eased and played out a great match in the sun. Really enjoyable tennis, including some proper doubles volleys at the net, fun times. Neck and neck all day, but the Wikings prevailed in the end, with player of the day Pauline, winning all four sets to love. Looking forward to our next match against Murgon.

Katya's Tennis Drills Thrills and Fitness is on Friday Nights at 5:45pm. Cost is $20. Come along and join in the fun. All levels are welcome. Enquiries: 0437 295 501

Maleny Players Next Production!

We’re excited to be bringing you 'Dancing with Lughnasa' by Brian Friel- and Directed by Andrew Wallace. Dancing at Lughnasa is a 1990 play set in a cottage in County Donegal in 1936. It’s a household of five unmarried sisters who would all like to be married. The youngest has an illegitimate son, the eldest tries to keep preserve family respectability. But now the father of the child re-appears, full of seductive charm, while an elder brother has just returned after decades working as a priest in Africa and is strangely changed.

In the back hills there are still lingering pagan rituals, Lugh (pronounced ‘Loo’) being the ancient Celtic god of the harvest. The rhythms of family life play out against broader social tensions and economic hardship. You will enjoy meeting these fundamentally good-hearted and resilient people.

At Friday evening performances you are invited to come along at 6pm to purchase a bowl of Irish stew to enjoy whilst being entertained with music on the veranda at the Playhouse.

Please purchase your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to seeing you at the Playhouse.

Landsborough’s Dark Skies Need Your Help

After a very successful campaign that lobbied to retain some of the darkest skies in SE Qld, Maleny Observatories astronomist Dr Ken Wishaw once again needs community support to help our neighbouring town of Landsborough.

The Maleny campaign achieved much success with the Sunshine Coast Council and the Qld Government thanks to Ken’s efforts in harnessing a petition, instigated by MDSRC and promoted by Andrew Powell MP.

Queensland Rail are building a 350 space car park at Landsborough, and concerns are mounting as Queensland Rail have flagged already that they will not adopt dark sky lighting consistent with the Australian Government National Light pollution Guidelines, the Sunshine Coast Urban Lighting Master Plan, the Guidelines of the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance or the International Dark Sky Association.

The Sunshine Coast hinterland is the LAST area of coastal South East Queensland that is not heavily light polluted and its dark skies are highly valued by its residents and visitors.

There is a growing number of visitors coming to the hinterland specifically to enjoy the night sky, that has the potential to become a significant tourism drawcard. If the car park and the ongoing long term upgrading of the northern rail line use inappropriate lighting, all this is at risk. Every inappropriate light contributes to light pollution that spreads over 300kms from its source.

Sunshine Cost Council have raised the concern with Queensland Rail but it seems Queensland Rail do not wish to incorporate dark sky policies into their new build even at this early stage.

Andrew Powell is aware of this latest news and the feeling is that community pressure is needed to help his investigations at the state government level. Please consider letting Andrew Powell MP, an enthusiastic supporter of dark sky initiatives, of your concern and support to make a change at the QR development at Glass.House@parliament.qld.gov.au and there is also a feed-back link for QR at https://translink.com.au/contact-us/feedback

Visit Fairview this Saturday

Fairview - Pattemore House - is open again this Saturday 27th May from 1 - 4 pm.

Not only can you enjoy stories of Maleny's building and dairying past but you can also stock your pantry with our home-made jams and pickles! Our Patron Val Carbery (nee Guille) is a Maleny Show awardwinning jam maker extraordinaire!

Val's mum, Alma Pattemore, spent her childhood at Fairview, caring for the lady of the house, her grandmother, Emily Pattemore. We love to think of all the jam and pickle making skills passed down through the generations. This time of year we have Val's Lemon Butter, Tangelo Marmalade and Choko pickles available.

We also have some delicious local fruit Tamarillo Chutney and Jam for sale - have you ever tried this delightful fruit?

The families associated with Fairview, like all families in the district, were always involved in the local show - the biggest event on the Maleny calendar since it began in 1923. Jean Larney (nee Dickson) whose family share-farmed for the Pattemores (1927 - late 30's) recorded in her notes that the Pattemore's garden “always had beautiful camellias growing”. You can see these same camellias still growing in the garden today.

At the 1932 Maleny Show, the Pattemore family were well into the action, winning prizes in the following categories:

✦ rhubarb, squashes, jam oranges, valencia oranges – JR Pattemore

✦ pickles, orange marmalade, cape gooseberry jam, chutney – Mrs Stan Pattemore

✦ carrots, broad beans – Stan Pattemore

✦ fodder (mixed chaff) – Stan and Gilbert

Pattemore

✦ heaviest potatoes – Gilbert Pattemore

The weather for Saturday is predicted to be beautiful - there’s loads of parking, and disabled access to the building.

The Friends of Pattemore House invite you to drop by, order your afternoon tea and relax on the spacious verandahs after taking in some of this great local history.

Fairview is at. Porters Lane Maleny. Entry is just $5.00 with kids entry free.

Travelling Jackeroo hits $100,000

Thanks to his efforts, Maleny’s Sam Hughes, known around the world now to his followers as the Travelling Jackaroo, has surpassed raising $100,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Travelling around Australia after leaving Maleny with his beloved dog Bitza in his amazing rig, pulled by his restored tractor, Slim, Sam is raising awareness and funds for his heartfelt charities - Drought Angels, Royal Flying Doctor Service, Dolly's Dream, and the Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial.

Visiting rural and outback and outback areas, he is hoping to raise awareness on social issues for those in the bush, and to help out as much as he can. Maleny again congratulates one of its own, what an achievement Sam. After leaving Maleny in March 2021 and ever since travelling to WA he is on his way to the southern states, now in Stonehenge Qld.
