Sunshine Coast Council says “Look out or your neighbours during the Coronavirus pandemic

In the midst of the global novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, where uncertainty can strike at the core of our everyday lives, Sunshine Coast Council is encouraging all residents to look out for their neighbours - particularly those who are most vulnerable - and show that community spirit for which our residents are renowned.

As part of council’s existing At Home in my Neighbourhood program - Council’s #covidkindness platform will explore weekly themes to encourage residents to Stay Connected, Stay Informed, Stay Healthy, Stay Playful, Stay Creative and Stay Neighbourly to help combat social isolation, loneliness and community disconnection. Like many acts of kindness starting to emerge online, Council officers have developed a free postcard that can be downloaded from council’s website. Residents can print out the postcard and pop it in their neighbour’s mailbox using good hand hygiene or screenshot and send to their neighbours electronically. This encourages people to get to know their neighbours and assist those who may be isolated or cannot get out and travel around or having difficulties coping, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. What the council is asking people to do is please reach out and check on your neighbours, especially our older neighbours. It could be something as simple as leaving one of these postcards in your neighbour’s mailbox and offering to purchase a few groceries for them if they’re in social isolation, helping to put their bins out or even just writing down your phone number so they have someone to call if they need to have a chat. This also gives people a chance to connect in ways we might not have considered and result in lifelong friendships. Council will continue to review operations as the situation evolves. For information about other council facilities and services during this time, visit the COVID-19 page at: https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Living-and-Community/ Community-Support/ COVID19#utm_source=Corporate&utm_medium=spotlight

Maleny Interact News

This photos were taken at the recent Earlyact/Interact conference at St Columbans College, Caboolture on Sunday 8th March. The Interact Group from Maleny State High School were in attendance and, with the other groups, managed in half an hour to assemble 75 of the Solar Buddy lights which are an Australian made product. These were added to others and will be sent to the Solomon Islands to help other children with their studies as many of them don't have electricity in their homes. As can be seen in the photos, 1.4 billion people have little or no access to electricity.

Pioneer Village Maleny Closed In response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, immediate today, all volunteer-run museums and galleries have been advised to close to the public and our programs to be temporarily suspended. These recommendations recognise that volunteer groups, particularly in the heritage sector, are largely comprised of an older demographic, and refer to the risk to which older people are exposed to if they contract COVID-19. Temporary closure is a precautionary measure to assist public health services, ensure individual risk is minimised and to support communities across our State during this difficult time. Thanks very much for your understanding and we will contact everyone again regards reopening when we receive advice it is safe to do so. Maleny Show Cancelled

On behalf of the Maleny Agricultural Show Society Committee, we regret to advise our Volunteers, Patrons, Officials, Competitors, Ambassadors, Supporters, Sponsors and Members that the 2020 Maleny Show has been cancelled.

With the current environment we feel it’s the right and only decision to make. The health and safety of our patrons, exhibitors and volunteers was paramount to our final decision. This is the first time since 1965 that the show cannot go on. Drought was the cause of that cancellation, but this time it’s a different story for us all. We would like to thank the general public for their understanding and support of our show, and all Queensland Shows,

as we make this very difficult decision. The health and safety of our entire community is foremost in our minds at this time. We would like to pay tribute to our hard working show volunteers, who are disappointed that all their hard work to prepare for the show has come to this point. If it had been a normal year and we had gone ahead, we know we would have had a fantastic event. We’d hoped the Show would have been a special occasion for our farmers and locals to celebrate the recent good rain, so this cancellation is particularly disappointing in that regard. We wish to deal with the emotional toll this will take on our members and patrons, and work hard to ensure the Show Society

has limited financial impact for the future. We certainly intend to hold a show in 2021. We are collating information on entries, trade, sponsorship and membership that have already come in, and will be working with these individually in the coming days. A timetable will be in place by the end of the week to deal with 2020 contractual matters, sponsorship, trade and refunds. Halting the spread of COVID-19 is everyone’s responsibility. We understand the frustration felt by the community but we are all in this together as everyone is being affected. Please be nice to each other, and not project your disappointments and frustrations onto our volunteers, it is out of their hands.

Cancellation Notice At the RSL Board meeting, the decision was made to close the Maleny RSL Hall for the duration and to cancel ANZAC Day commemorations. All activities at the RSL Hall have been cancelled. However, Melissa McBean who runs the Yoga Classes will continue to offer these on Tuesdays (5.30pm to 7pm) and Wednesdays (9.30am to 11am) at the Showgrounds in the Exhibition Hall next to the Maleny Community Gym. However, so that ANZAC Day does not go unremarked, RSL’s Chris Brooker will light the flame on the Cenotaph at 4.28 am and lower the flag. A wreath will be laid and the RSL are inviting members of the public to place their tributes during the day in their own time. A basket of rosemary will be left near the Cenotaph for this purpose. At Witta, a similar activity will happen - the flag will be lowered, rosemary will be available and people are encouraged to make their own tributes during the day.

Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) prevention Worried? Take the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) quiz You might catch novel coronavirus (COVID-19) if:

2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or bent elbow when coughing or sneezing.

• someone with the virus sneezes or coughs onto you

4. Stay home if you are unwell.

• someone with the virus coughed or sneezed onto a surface (like a door handle) that you touch, and you get the infected droplets on your hands and then transfer them to your mouth, nose or eyes when you touch your face or eat.

3. Avoid touching your face, nose and mouth. And avoid shaking hands. 5. Practice social distancing, which includes staying 1.5m away from others as much as you can. Looking after yourself by eating a healthy, balanced diet, getting regular physical activity, sleeping well and reducing stress is important all the time. All essential day-to-day activities, such as school and work, can proceed as normal. Anyone who is feeling unwell should not attend public events, and should stay home from work and school.

There are 5 ways we can all help stop the spread of viruses 1. Clean your hands regularly with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rubs.

Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Inc

Household cleaning We know that germs can survive outside of the body, on surfaces, after a person coughs or sneezes. Regular cleaning is important for reducing the spread of germs and minimising the number of germs surviving on surfaces. Learn more about how you can keep your surfaces at home clear of germs through routine household cleaning recommendations to reduce the risk of viral infections, or recommendations for COVID-19 cleaning and disinfection. The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Donna Manning has spent the last nine days competing in the Australian Croquet Association women’s championship and the Eire Cup –the major interstate competition. She reports that the hospitality and conditions are good, that she is playing well and is enjoying her games. She must have impressed Tasmanian players because she was asked to fill a place in the Tasmanian team in the Eire Cup who were required to return home early because of the Covid –19 restrictions. This is an honour for her and our club. Well done Donna. On Thursday Sally Adams and Helen Uhlmann went down 2 –5 to Kath Smith and Janelle Wilson, while Ken Barker beat Nick Cram 16 –9 in a good game. Helen and Janelle backed up on Friday to play a 14 point game which Janelle won by pegging out –very commendable. Saturday saw Vince Carbery coaching Helen, Janelle, Jan Trendle, and Len Baker with two evenly matched games of singles following in which all players demonstrated skills well beyond their experience. The attached photo was not taken after a serious misadventure on the lawn but illustrates the precision that some players require in their game. hoop and either the black with it or to follow in the next stroke. This is a shot where many things can go wrong and if that were the case, with the red opponent ball hovering, would probably give the game away. Hence Troy took great care in lining it all up, successfully made the peel, and went on to win the game. Coaching for beginners and others is available from accredited coaches from 8 am to 10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days on the laid-back lawns at the bottom of the show-ground are2.00pm for 2.30 pm on Thursdays and Sundays.

Australian Health Protec$on Principal CommiMee (AHPPC) coronavirus (COVID-19) statement on 22 March 2020 AHPPC supports national discontinuation of all nonessential gatherings.

implemented in mid-March to be assessed and future interventions to be planned.

AHPPC recognises the importance of a nationally consistent approach to measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This entails the temporary closure of registered and licensed clubs (excluding bottle-shops attached to these venues), pubs, hotels (excluding accommodation), gyms, indoor sporting venues, cinemas, casinos, entertainment venues, restaurants and cafes (which will be restricted to take away and/or home delivery), places of worship, weddings, funerals (other than very small groups with the 4sqM per person rule to apply).

AHPPC is also concerned about large informal outside gatherings and will come back to National Cabinet with more guidance. It is very important to encourage the community to adhere to social distancing outdoors, prior to the application of more stringent measures.

All of these restrictions apply to outdoor spaces associated with the above venues. Isolated remote community hubs are not included in this closure. Further restrictions may be considered as necessary. These measures must be reviewed at one month. The duration of any measures must also take into account the changed trajectory of case numbers. If control is not strong at the end of one month, these measures may be continued for some months with some societal functioning. Effectiveness will depend on population-level compliance with social distancing and enhancements to casefinding, early isolation, contact tracing and quarantine. These measures would also allow some of the health system preparedness concerns to be addressed, for the impact of the social distancing interventions

AHPPC does not support closure of schools at this time AHPPC does not support the closure of schools given the lack of evidence of significant disease in children and the lack of reported major disease spreading in schools. Furthermore, the closure of schools poses a major risk to children's education, mental health and wellbeing, particularly those from low a regions, where schools provide an important environment for nurturing and learning

School closures are likely to be more effective when approaching the peak of the epidemic and enforced for a shorter period. If there is a strong desire to close schools at this later stage, it is essential that an option is provided for children of essential service providers, such as health care workers, to attend school or be otherwise cared for. AHPPC notes one state has elected to bring forward their Easter school holidays. Website: https://www.health.gov.au/ committees-and-groups/ australian-health-protectionprincipal-committeeahppc#statements-

The impact on the critical workforce and potential exposure of elderly relatives caring for children is also of significance. School closure would achieve some degree of additional social distancing but the evidence of its benefit at this stage is minimal. AHPPC views schools as an essential service and strongly supports keeping schools open. There are significant opportunities to improve social distancing within schools, and we will continue to work to provide advice to the sector. AHPPC will continue to review developing evidence regarding the effect of the disease in children and the role of children in the transmission of the virus.
