Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Singing for Charity Did you know that the Maleny Singers have used their considerable talents not only to entertain us, but also to donate over $70,000 to Maleny community organisations since 2004? An incredible achievement for an amateur musical group! Loving what they do, passionate Singer’s director and conductor Margaret Taylor happily presented a cheque for $5000 to the Maleny Rural

Fire Service recently - the result of sell out houses from their last production, the Yeomen of the Guard. “We are a community singing ensemble that aims to foster love of music and make a charitable impact in our region” said Margaret. Brigade First Of cer Scott Perrie was delighted with the outcome. “We have had our eye on a new trailer, pump, and in atable dam, that will enable us to make much better use of our equipment on the bigger res,” he said. “This donation will go a long way towards funding that purchase.” The Maleny Singers is a not-for-pro t group which has regularly made nancial contributions to worthwhile causes in our community, and all members contribute their skills voluntarily, singing, acting and dancing their way into the hearts of so many. 2020 Paralympic Games are here

The 2020 Olympic Games are done and dusted but the equally important Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games are nally here, with Australia boasting a strong team of 179 athletes.

Prior to the advent of the Paralympics, athletes with disabilities did compete at the Olympic Games The 20200 Paralympic is the third biggest sporting event in the world and we get to celebrate disability along with the talented Paralympic sportspersons. The Paralympics has grown from a small gathering of British World War II veterans in 1948. The Paralympic Games are organised in parallel with the Olympic Games, whilst the International Olympic Committee recognised “Special Olympics World Games” and promoted and combined these games to include athletes with intellectual disabilities, and the “Dea ympics” include deaf athletes. The rst of cial Paralympic Games, coincident with the ninth Stoke Mandeville Games but no longer open solely to war veterans, was held in Rome in 1960with 400 athletes from 23 countries. Now let the games begin and good luck to ALL paralympics.

Radically Real Conversations – master skills that pull the team together with Josie Coco The game brie ng is very likely to be the subject of hot spots, vaccinations, masks wearing and lockdowns. It's possible to have the dif cult conversations with those closest to us when we understand that we can't alway share the same perspective, and are prepared to honour our differences as we attempt to keep our eye on the ball and our head in the game. 1.

In my humble opinion, it's taken quite a bit of personal therapy to learn that my humble opinion is of little value in a conversation when it con icts with someone else's, or the team plan overall. Has anyone ever asked you for your humble opinion? Perhaps save it for “Dear Diary” if you want to avoid unnecessary con ict and retain friendships.

2.

Unless someone gives you the green light, knock yourself out, give it your best shot, it pays to ask permission before you share your own story related to the experience they are sharing. The safest bet is to wait until after the pause, and I’m talking about a long pause, before jumping the gun. When it rings true to you, you’ll feel it in your body and in your emotions. Something’s going to lighten up or tighten up, feel squeamish, or knot up inside you. It simply means that you have some experience with, and therefore some idea of how they are impacted by, the experience they are sharing. Sharing your physical reaction helps people to feel that they are not alone --> inclusion. "When you said that, my heart skipped a beat/my stomach churned."

3.

Radically Real Conversations support our close relationships by giving us the skills to be open to other perspectives of what it takes to stay in the game of life. People are generally more willing to join your team when they feel that they have been heard and their point of view accepted as true for them. Raf e Winner at the Drag Queen Bingo!

A very happy local, Shelley Dauth, was the major raf e prize winner on Sunday night at the Drag Queen Bingo event held at the Maleny RSL. I’ll be letting everyone know next week exactly how much we all raised but it is a signi cant amount. The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Ahhhh! The relief!! It was with great relish that we embraced play without masks again. That, together with this glorious “almost spring” weather, has made playing croquet a joyous experience this past week.

position it to better effect the following croquet shot. We then went on to practice this, with various levels of success… Let’s just say that there were many jump shots effected, with the strikers ball jumping over the second ball! If only we could harness this mistake when jump shots are needed!! Vince persevered in his usual style despite the set-backs and we hope to put our learnings into practice on upcoming game days.

On our play day on Thursday 19th of August, Sally Adams played Bev Sockhill in a close contest ending in an 8 all draw. In a second match up, the Carberrys played a well fought marital contest, with Val very convincingly the victor over Vince with 16 hoops to ve. A third contest with Lynette Evans and Gillian Bradley taking on Janelle Wilson was a low scoring match, with Janelle the victor and a nal score of four hoops to two.

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am For details contact, or Contact Sarah Widin President 0417 640 704. There is also much information about the club on the web site below. https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au Follow on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/rangecroquetclub/?__tn__=HHH-R

Play on Sunday 21st of August involved some robust match-ups with Sarah Widen and Kath Smith coming up short in their contest against the reunited Carberrys with a nal score of four hoops to ten. In the other match, it was a tightly fought victory to Janelle with 10 hoops over Wallace with eight hoops.

Time to get that jab!

Saturday morning saw coaching by Vince Carberry attended by Stuart Craig, Helen Uhlmann, Wallace Roy and Bev Sockhill. Vince spent time coaching us through various tricky but useful shots. The attached photo shows Vince demonstrating a rush shot, where the strikers ball is hit rmly into the ball being roqueted, moving it forward to
