Farewell Gail Denver

Following the passing of community stalwart, Ms Gail Denver on September 30th there was a pouring out of emotions that came to a head on Saturday October 21st October 2023. This day was a “bitter sweet day” for the Maleny community as over 200 people attended the celebration of life of Ms Gail Denver. ail was a stalwart of the fabric of Maleny's social and cultural community for over 40 years. Her gifts to the community have been many and varied over that period.

G

sucked the marrow from the bones of life”.

One such gift was the the effort and inspiration that she put into the formation of the Maleny Precinct in the early planning and procurement. This task was not always easy or straight forward, but she just would not let it go and today we see the results of progress by that initial small community group.

Then there was the time that Gail, a very keen cricketer went to The Gabba to see Australia and English play a test in 1988. Gail was able to gain entry to the Members Room by telling the ushers that she was the wife of Yorkshire player, English fast bowler, Graham Dilley. There she sat sipping gin and tonic and devouring cucumber sandwiches. It must have meant something as Graham Lilley bagged 5 wickets in that innings, his best career bag of wickets.

There were very few community groups that she did not volunteer for and they include over the years: Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club, Maleny Croquet Club, Maleny Players, Maleny Junior Cricket, the Maleny Show Society (where she was a beef steward for over 30 years), Maleny Australia Day Expo and the Maleny Selectors Green committee and not to forget the Friends of Pattemore House and Fairview.

He explained that soon after receiving her drivers licence she managed to “back over her Nanna. Nanna started calling out, “Gail! Gail! You’ve run over me” in her Yorkshire voice. Thankfully, Nanna was not hurt.

MDSARC member, Max Whitton said there are still projects in hand that Gail had put her stamp on. Gail has made a lasting contribution to her community. RIP. Gail and thanks!!!.

The Celebration of Life was conducted by Gail’s brother, Simon Denver and he did not hide any little indiscretions when he outlined some of the transgressions that she committed during her life. Simon said, “My sister loved life. She https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News

SENSATIONAL SUMMER OF CRICKET AHEAD FOR THE MALENY REDBACKS From Maleny Redbacks Club President Catherine Millett #littleclubbigheart

I

t was a cracking start to the season for our mixed Under 10’s team last Friday night at the Palmwoods Hinterland Hawks Cricket Club; playing under lights, and in the cool of the evening, certainly is a great atmosphere. We had Maci Corkin and Finn Duncan making their debut with the bat and ball for the club, and it was Finn who took home the player of the match award; his effort with the bat and enthusiasm in the eld was rewarded by Coach Tim Messer.

our famous BBQ and we’ll be giving every player and their siblings a free ice cream. To keep up to date with all Maleny Cricket Club news visit: https://www.facebook.com/malenycricketclub/

Oliver Millett, Flynn Messer and Elliott Ward all did a fantastic job with the bat and were our top scorers on the night. On the eld it was a sensational effort from the whole team; run outs, catches and Oscar Busk still putting in a mighty effort with his spin bowling. Big thank you to all our parents, siblings and grandparents who came along and cheered on the team; your support is so vital to our players con dence and the spirit of the game. And a big thank you to Coach Tim for his work out in the middle and to Mrs J for her stellar job with scoring. This season, we will be playing teams from Glasshouse, Landsborough, Palmwoods and Flinders. We have only been given one home game in the draw-it’s this coming Friday 27 October and we’re determined to make it one to remember for all the players! As always, with the help of parents, committee members and the community we’ll be putting on

I ha‘ve been taking surplus fruit down to the MNC for a long time—I have a lot of avocado and citrus trees—and I spoke to some of the front desk volunteers, who told me how the MNC helps the community. Their enthusiasm impressed me, so I decided to go local and make the MNC the bene ciary.’ ‘Miles of Moments’ is showing at 3 Obi Lane North Maleny from Tuesday 31 October to Wednesday 8 November. The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Ricochet took on a very busy look on Tuesday. The game of the day was a doubles game on lawn 1. Ricki Barrett of Caloundra club brought two friends of hers from Tasmania: Claire Bamford and Heather Lovell accomplished association players who wanted a hit at ricochet. Dianne Horsman teamed up with Heather to execute an entertaining victory over Ricki and Claire 14 – 12. On lawn 2 Stuart Craig and Wallace Roy were no match for Ken Barker and Ted Gardner losing 3 – 7 to carefully considered play. Association croquet ruled the lawn on Thursday with Helen Andrews and Claire 2 going down to Wendy Raven and Wallace 3. Peter Goodsir and Lynette Evans were no match for an on- re Nick Cram. Nick won 26 – 10. There was was no herd of Harleys parked outside the lawn to photograph when a very civilised OMG (Oldtimers Motorcycle Group) – the Ulysses club whose motto is to “grow old disgracefully”, visited our lawns on Friday. Most came in caravans for the weekend. There was a sausage sizzle with food aplenty as the groups had to be rotated in one-hour slots just to t the sixty or so people in. It was a great day, full of fun and camaraderie. Haste ye back!

Widin narrowly lost to Donna Manning 14 – 15 and Ken beat Nick 11 – 7 Our web address is: https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au For details contact Sarah Widin 0417640704 (President ) or by email: therange@croquetqld.org
