The Covid situation whilst easing in Qld, is still impacting on community events both large and small. Here is the latest update from the Chairman of the Expo Committee, Rick Vickers, regards the cancellation of the popular Hinterland Aussie Day Expo that so many community groups participate in on Australia Day at the Showgrounds each year, "We regret to advise that, despite our best efforts in planning the activities and detailing the many procedures required, the Hinterland Aussie Day Expo will be cancelled for 2021. Despite some hard work in planning and taking advice and suggestions from Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Health, Maleny Show Society and staff from TS CENTAUR, we have found that the procedures and restrictions to be imposed due to COVID 19 would be too much of a burden to conduct the three hour Expo event. However, for those wishing to still do something on Australia Day in Maleny, I understand the APEX Big Breakfast is still being planned at the Showgrounds, as is the Australian Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony at TS CENTAUR.

denvergail1@gmail.com

You should contact both those organisations if you wish to attend as individual citizens/residents. On behalf of the Expo organising committee, we realise that this cancellation is a disappointment to many, however even a scaled down version cannot guarantee your health and safety.

no later than 12 noon every Monday.

We look forward (eagerly) to planning for the 2022 event and will keep you posted as to developments.”

Pool

News

The Maleny Swimming Pool committee is still working very hard to nd a new pool manager so that they can open the pool this summer. The volunteer committee tasked with the job thanks everyone for their patience. President Gail Ring explained "Because of COVID we were unable to keep our last coach manager, as we did not have a de nite date that we could open and make this a viable option for him. Most Pool Managers and coaches are well employed by end July each year, and this was tricky this year. The other criteria we have which does not suit many is that we only open for 30 weeks and most are looking for a full year of employment. I hope this clears up a few points for all. We are still dealing with a couple of hopefuls, so not all is lost.” 2020 has been a tough year for all community organisations, especially those running public facilities and we must continue to help one another. Thanks to our frontline health workers

The current coronavirus pandemic is like nothing Australia’s healthcare workers have seen before. And while the response has been one of resilience, dedication and compassion, it’s essential to acknowledge the enormous pressure that they are under. The virus has placed “critical” pressure on our health system. The uncertainty is having a big impact on the wellbeing of health workers. At this time as the virus is presently being kept in some form of control all Australians owe those at the very front lines debt of thanks. Unfortunately this virus can suddenly break out anywhere and at any time. So it is important that we all realise that the Covid 19 virus has not been eliminated and it is necessary that we all continue to take the necessary personal health precautions to make our individual environment as safe as possible. Personal sacri ces have become the norm for many healthcare workers in order to keep the rest of us in some sort of safety.

Don’t Worry Be Happy Enjoy the day!

.It is important that we all make some time to stop, re ect on the many teams of healthcare workers who worked to keep us safe. To all these workers and the everyday Australians doing their bit to combat the COVID-19 crisis: thank you.

Elder Abuse Forum in Maleny Elder abuse is a neglected aspect of Domestic and Family Violence, so SPEAK UP NOW. Maleny and Blackall Range will host a free forum targeting this serious problem at Maleny RSL on Tuesday December 1 at 10.30am. As well as physical and emotional abuse, elders often suffer abuse of power by those entrusted with their care. It is expected older people from our community as well as those who care for them would attend this important information program. The forum is free and all are welcome. A complimentary morning tea will be served and it will continue from 11am till 12.30. Proceedings will open with a 40 minute movie of a play ‘Piano Forte’, written by staff at the Suncoast Community Legal Service. This is a fun and easily accessible way of introducing the issues of elder abuse and the pitfalls associated with Wills and Enduring Powers of Attorney. Speakers from the Sunshine Coast Community Legal Service as well as Tove Easton of Easton Lawyers will address the audience and questions will be welcome. Because of COVID 19 restrictions it is necessary for you to book. Please email: combinedserviceclubsmaleny@gmail.com or ring Val France on 0419599042 as soon as possible to make sure of your place.
