Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter High School Sports Centre Makeover With our schools getting back to business this week, it’s great to hear about the makeover that the Maleny High School’s Indoor Activity Centre received in 2020. Commencing last July and completed in eight weeks, the project saw the toileting facilities completely renovated, a new roof, a repaint inside and out, and in especially great news for the various users, the installation of a new activity oor. The Pulastic Professional Sports Surface was applied over the existing timber sprung ooring, providing so many bene ts for users: Good resiliency for comfort and injury prevention Seamless, non-porous and smooth surface for easy maintenance Outstanding ball bounce

Excellent contact noise reduction (acoustic insulation) The high content of recycled and renewable raw materials, in combination with lasting performance through outstanding mechanical strength and much better wear resistance means the project has a high degree of sustainability too. The adjoining Waroo building was also updated, and together the two buildings make a fantastic local sports and recreation facility, that the school hires to local clubs and organisations. Some readers may be surprised to hear how many sporting activities take place at the Maleny Indoor Activity Centre! Continued on Page 2

As 2020 came to an end and Covid restrictions eased, the Club was able to squeeze one meeting in on November 25th. At that last meeting for 2020, the time was utilised to introduce the new management committee, who were elected by an online electronic vote, as the of cial AGM in March was cancelled due to the Covid restrictions at the time. Past President Stan McCallum of cially handed over the Chain of Of ce to the new President Barbara Hays.

Tuesday 19th January, 2021: There was a Mixed Stableford 18 hole competition with rst place going to Doug Evans with 38 points on a countback from Andrew Gercken, also with 38 points. Runner-up went to Neil Stenhouse with 37 points and third place going to Jon Fairman with 36 points on a count-back from Richard Owen, also with 36 points.

As per the photo, the new Management Committee is: Front Row L to R: Cynthia Daniels (Secretary), Alison Frew (Vice President), Barbara Hays (President), Susan Myring (Treasurer), committee members: John Gyzemyter, Anne Siemon, Stan McCallum. Back row: John Dalziel, Anne Boyle, Di Begnie, Susan Dalziel. We also took the opportunity to formally induct and introduce 7 new members who had been accepted earlier but were unable to come to meetings because of the suspension. As there was some spare time several members spoke about their individual experiences about how they coped with the Covid restriction.

Wednesday 20th January, 2021: There was a Mixed Stroke Nett 18 hole event with rst place going to Tonny Jorgensen with 68 nett, runner-up was Simon Lower with 71 points and third place went to Ian Chew with 78 points. Third place went to Gary Wright with 35 points. Here we are again with another year commencing our competition games on our great golf course. Should you wish to play a round or two with your friends or fellow members, just phone our clubhouse on 54909 9960 or go online and book yourselves in to avoid the disappointment of playing on the day and time you wish.

One member spoke about taking the motor home to Beerwah for shopping and how he sanitised before leaving the motor home, sanitised upon entering the store, sanitised upon leaving the store and nally sanitised upon re-entering the motor home. He was extremely well sanitised. When the meeting concluded the members all adjourned for a wonderful Christmas Morning Tea provided by the ladies from the CWA. The President took the opportunity to thank the CWA ladies for the wonderful morning teas in the past and look forward to the delicious spreads in this new year. Our meetings will resume on 24th February. If you think you may be interested in joining Probus, you are most welcome to come along as a visitor and check us out. SPEAK UP NOW hits the ground running

Following a year of activity bringing their aims for a domestic violence free community to the people of the Blackall Range, the SPEAK UP NOW committee has new plans for 2021.

The second bench is at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and was dedicated by Federal member for Fisher Andrew Wallace MP and Cr Winston Johnston.

Established by three then presidents of local service clubs, Val France (Quota), Judith Ross-Smith (Zonta) and Sherryl Gregory (Rotary) in order to bring to this community, awareness of the presence of domestic and family violence (DFV), how to call it out and how best to support potential victims in accessing appropriate help and advice.

In his speech Mr Wallace announced the report of A Domestic and Family Violence Inquiry being held currently will be released in February or March.

2020 had seen a focus public meeting with speakers from the police Vulnerable Persons Unit, as well as support groups from the Sunshine Coast dealing with both victims and perpetrators, an elder abuse forum, the roll out of toilet signage for men’s toilets with help phone numbers, the design of a distinctive logo and ‘brand’ name, much editorial from local print media who were happy to come on board to help this worthwhile initiative. An interesting sideline for the group has been the partnership with the Red Bench Project of the Red Rose Foundation against DFV who place red benches in key positions with a plaque worded ‘Domestic violence: Let’s change the ending’. The rst red bench was one Quota members had been donated originally to Maleny outside the post of ce and renovated by the Men’s Shed and Rotary.

“I have learnt a lot from this inquiry and it has revealed harrowing information. One woman every nine days is killed as a result of DV and each day 12 women are hospitalised from assault… “As men we have to take a leading role in overcoming this scourge. But we have to change the culture and that starts with the kids,” he said. Cr Johnston has announced the Sunshine Coast Council has approved the placement of Red Benches as part of DFV month in May, at Nambour, Alexandra Headland, Caloundra and another in Maleny. The committee is also looking to bring the concept of Hairdressers with Hearts to local hairdressers, barbers and beauty therapists soon.

Maleny Historical Society - “Elephants in Maleny” Researcher Amanda Wilson recorded in her Chronological List of Historical Events for Maleny that a circus did indeed visit Maleny in 1921. Peg Burnett told the tale that she remembers her sister, Mary McLean, being mauled about the head by a circus lion, when it was tied up on the stage of the School of Arts Hall, and local vet and butcher, Jack Grigor (Landsborough Shire Council Councillor) came to her rescue.

She was not seriously hurt. In this photo, the Maleny Hotel is beyond the elephants and circus tents. The hill at the back is where Cloudwalk is today. Note Lawley House on the horizon, that was shifted to the Pioneer Village in 2008. Photo: Elephants in Dunlop’s paddock, now the Maleny Primary School oval, 1921. From the Dave Hankinson Collection.

Men Talk @ Maleny

Seven Australian men lose their lives to suicide every day. We want to build resilient men and celebrate their contributions to family, workplaces and communities. Men in your club or organisation are invited to come along to a FREE event at the Maleny Community Centre at 5.00pm Wednesday 3 February 2021. Donations are welcome on the night. We'll start with pizza at 5.00pm and formalities commence at 6.00pm. We'll brie y provide some information about how to identify people who may have thoughts of suicide and then how to check up on mates and family. We'll hear men share their stories, including successes and what works for their well being

and then seek your input about how we can raise the pro le of men's well being and suicide prevention on the Blackall Range. Men of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. It is about information sharing to build capacity and resilience in our local communities. Every one of us has a part to play in creating suicide-safer communities and the more we talk about the subject, the more stigma or shame is reduced and then men may be more inclined to seek support. Please circulate this info to men you know, come along yourself – and encourage some family and friends to come too. Women can come along too! This is the link to register - it's not complicated but essential: Please do not leave it until the last minute! https://events.humanitix.com/men-talk-stories-ofhope-maleny All enquiries to Merilyn Keene 0437 986 633.
