Beautifying

I

f you’ve been enjoying the welcome addition of many bright and beautiful hanging baskets now adorning the businesses along Maple Street and the Maleny Hotel, here’s where they came from! The Maleny Street Gardener's Alliance, a group of local gardening enthusiasts, has been working towards beautifying Maple Street for almost one year now – here’s an update on what they have achieved. As a completely voluntary group, with no funding from Council, their only source of funds is from the shop owners and tenants who are just as committed as they are to beautifying Maleny. In one short year they have come a long way:

Maple Street Employed a Maleny resident to water the baskets and tubs twice weekly.

They are currently involved in •

Fully maintaining the baskets and tubs along Maple Street – hanging, watering, fertilising and replacement when required.

Working with community groups involved in the Sunshine Coast Council Maleny Streetscape Project Group and Placemaker Group.

Establishing another 50-80 hanging baskets populated with Spring owers for display in Maple Street at the end of our winter.

Applying for grants to support their activities.

Worked with the Sunshine Coast Council to complete the upgrade of the roundabout at the eastern entry to Maple Street. They are currently speaking with the Council to refurbish it after the extreme rain conditions have impacted on its attractiveness as the main entry to Maleny.

The MSGA's volunteer's enthusiasm for this program continues to be very strong, and they thank the Maleny community for the very positive responses and suggestions they have received.

Lodged an application with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to gain permission to adorn the Obi Obi Bridge with tubs and hanging baskets.

The Sunshine Coast Council is asking the community for any feedback on minor improvements to Maple Street to ensure it remains bustling and welcoming for all. Feedback can be given at:

Hung 63 baskets/tubs along Maple Street in front of their sponsors’ businesses. Completed their rst major hanging basket maintenance program by replacing 28 hanging baskets, which had suffered during the rainy conditions, with baskets of blossoming blooms.

Maleny Historical Memories with Desley Malone

Here is another good little pictorial tale of Maleny’s evolving shop fronts, with thanks to Desley Malone. Waddells Economy Stores, 15 Maple Street, taken C 1945. This store was built for the Maleny Co-operative Dairy Association and operated from 1911 - 1921. It was taken over by A M Hunt, then it became Myers and Hurst, Myers and Waddell, WJ Burnett (and son Rixon later) and in 1933 until 1961 it became Waddell’s Economy Store.

Today it’s Boxsells. Boxell’s shop front photo dated 1945.

Bingo for Smart Pups

Did you know it costs approximately $30,000 to raise, train and place a Smart Pups Assistance Dog? Smart Pups relies entirely on donations and fundraising efforts, and while they do not charge their clients for a Smart Pup, they do ask for assistance with fundraising, and require a $20,000 donation toward the client's Smart Pup. Read all about their mission here: https://www.smartpups.org.au/ At eight weeks old, specially bred and selected Labradors and Golden Retrievers begin their training with foster families. Their daily routine is one of fun, sleep, exercise, house training, and basic obedience. Puppies enjoy lots of socialisation and public interaction out in the community. A Smart Pup acts as a bridge between each child and the outside world; guiding children through their daily routine,

keeping them safe and comforting them when the world just gets too much. Local, Jared Ashcroft has organised a great night of Drag Queen Bingo in his own efforts to raise funds for Smart Pups and would love it if you could join him on the night. Jared’s request is to “Please help me raise much needed funds for this amazing organisation that works tirelessly in our community to improve the lives of children with autism.” You can help him do this by attending the Drag Queen Bingo on Saturday 20th August at Maleny RSL. It'll be a great night out with friends, while supporting Smart Pups! You can grab your tickets at: Ticketebo.com.au/smartpups Jared and friends will additionally be taking part in the Bridge to Brisbane 10km walk as an additional fundraiser for Smart Pups, watch out for further news on that one and in the meantime, if you can’t make the Bingo, why not make a donation to the Bridge to Brisbane that will see any donations made to Jared’s team go to Smart Pups too? https:// bridgetobrisbane.gofundraise.com.au/page/ JaredAshcroft-79301154?fs=e&s=cl
