Old Witta School Thanks to another grant from Sunshine Coast Council, we have been able to proceed with Stage 2 of necessary tree work in the grounds of the Old Witta School Community Centre. Trees have been trimmed, dead limbs removed to maintain tree health and 2 dead trees on the southern corner of the school have been safely removed. These will be replaced by small native trees in the very near future.

We held a working bee on 25th July to spread mulch and remove the tree guards from around our thriving koala planting. Please follow us on https://www.facebook.com/oldwittaschool

Radically Real Conversations 3 master skills with Josie Coco

It’s dif cult not to be impacted by pandemic information and directives coming out of left eld. Splits are appearing in communities, in families and between close friends as everyone jumps through hoops or jumps ship depending on their point of view. It seems like a good time to get the ball rolling with some conversation wisdom that might give you a sporting chance of staying in the game with close friends and family. 1.

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but satisfaction brought him back. Because we all experience life differently, being curious opens our hearts and minds to new manoeuvres and outcomes in the game plan. “Can you say more about how that is for you?”

2.

Great minds think alike, but fools seldom differ. Most every adult is capable of adapting as a resourceful human being, evidenced by the fact that they have made it this far in the game of life. Comparisons and good advice can feel like a hit below the belt, so hang onto that ball until you have a clear pass.

3.

Practise the pause. Use the pause to stay focussed. Take time to digest what you have heard while you allow it to land as new insights.

Radically Real Conversations helps us to come together as team players in our families and community. People are more willing to meet you half way when they feel that they have been heard and their point of view accepted as true for them. Please contact Josie Coco MGestTherapy to get involved. Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston

Budget wrap. I’m pleased to have delivered a range of items for the Division 5 community totalling more than $10 million in capital works which will go towards parks, recreational facilities, road construction and general maintenance. This year’s $816 million 2021/22 Budget was a dif cult process, however my fellow councillors and I tried to minimise increased costs, but still deliver our capital works program and service delivery throughout the Sunshine Coast. To view the full list of works visit my Facebook page at the address below. Prudent approach Whilst disappointing, it was necessary to drop the ve percent on-time rates payment discount to re-establish the $5 million Disaster Rehabilitation Reserve and the increase in on-the-ground services. By doing this, it’s a less onerous and more nancially prudent approach to support our growing community, while avoiding an across-the-board increase in the general rate. I encourage anyone experiencing nancial hardship to contact council before their rates are due, to arrange payment by instalments over a six-month period, without interest being charged. Road rehabilitation I’m very pleased to see that Division 5 will receive $3.3 million to rehabilitate 37 roads and streets across the division. That’s almost 30 kilometres of roads which will be resealed with bitumen chip or asphalt. This funding is part of the $23.3 million delivered for the Sunshine Coast, which will improve and maintain our sealed road network. Weed species control

Community Funding Projects up for Grabs Sunshine Coast Council Major Grants support eligible local community groups with funding up to $15,000 for projects (and up to $30,000 for infrastructure projects) in one of seven categories: Community Development Community events Community Facilities Cultural Development Cultural Heritage Economic Development, and Sports, Recreation and Healthy Living. Applications for Environment Levy Grants are also open, with up to $5000 available for not-for-pro t communitybased organisations to fund projects that make a positive and ongoing contribution to the region's biodiversity and waterways. The new nancial year’s rst round of Major Grants will close on 30 August 2021. To learn more about council’s grant programs and funding opportunities, visit: http://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ grants

I am excited to see an allocation of $600,000 to enhance the region’s response to weeds. This funding comes from the Environment Levy which will increase by $4 to $80 and raise $11.9 million to continue to support our environmental partnerships, education and coastal rehabilitation projects. I would like to thank my fellow councillors for listening to my pleas for weed control which will assist with education and also innovation in relation to the control of weed species along Obi Obi Creek, Maleny and a section of land west of Curramore Road, Witta. Maleny Hospital Auxiliary We Need You! Like many local organisations, our volunteer numbers are slowly decreasing, and the average age of our remaining volunteers is increasing. There are many non-pro t and other community groups here that rely completely on volunteers to keep the group operating, and we would welcome the involvement of new members. Perhaps you’ve recently moved to the area ? Our monthly meetings are held on Tuesday afternoons, and conclude with afternoon tea. If you’d like to meet members informally, come along to the Friendship Morning Tea on Thursday 29 July at 10am at the Community Centre (it’s $10.0). Bookings 0437 757 891. The Auxiliary does other catering for individuals, businesses and organisations, and it’s also possible that you could assist with catering, but not free to attend afternoon meetings. Please get in touch if this interests you, or you want further information.

(presidentmalenyhospaux@gmail.com or the above mobile number) Our committee has extensive projects in the planning stage and some dependent on nal approvals, but include: Refurbishing the 3 Palliative Care rooms and the area outside these rooms – we have a subcommittee looking at a range of options to make these rooms more comfortable for families, and patients; Refreshing the front gardens - soil testing will be followed by planting, and the addition of compost and mulch; Cleaning the timber garden chairs (all 15 of them), and the timber tables, and oiling them. These are used by both staff and patients in the outside areas of the Hospital. In true Maleny spirit, members of Apex, Rotary and the Maleny Men’s Shed, will help us with volunteer labour in these projects. We are so grateful for their willingness to support the Auxiliary. Fundraising continues and our special event this year will be A Springtime Affair, with a High Tea and Fashion Parade. This is to be held on 16 September at the Community Centre. The Auxiliary have an excellent and well-deserved reputation for their catering, so please come along for beautiful food, and an entertaining morning. Tickets are $30, which includes $10 of tickets in the raf es for the many substantial prizes donated once again by generous local businesses and individuals. Purchase tickets by phone (Louise 0415 446 856), or at Rosetta Books (cash or direct deposit please). Tables of 6 can be booked.

Maleny Hotel Joins Speak Up Now against Domestic and Family Violence The Maleny Hotel has partnered with the Maleny organisation - Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic and Family Violence group in Maleny. Recreational Mowers for Maleny

It seems that so many volunteer organisations just love to mow their various patches. This week we bring you Mandy McCosker, happily mowing the lawns around Pattemore House, in readiness for this coming Saturday’s open day to the public (1 - 4 pm).

Those who work in hotels regularly witness abusive behaviour - the new coasters underline that such behaviour is not acceptable, and that bystanders can help by speaking up, and offering help to victims. The Speak Up Now group is a collaboration between the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, the Rotary Club of Maleny, and Zonta Blackall Range whose aim is to reduce the number of domestic and family violence incidents within our community. They are doing this by raising awareness of what each of us can do to help children, women, and men to live a life free of violence and abuse.

The mower, purchased from Maleny Mountain Mowers, was the result of their successful grant from the Sunshine Coast Council’s grant scheme.

A spokesperson for the group said "We are very grateful that the Maleny Hotel has joined with us to show their support in our efforts to reduce domestic and family violence in our region, help victims to get help, and perpetrators of violence to change their behaviour. Having the Maleny Hotel's support af rms the message that violence is not acceptable in any form. We hope that other businesses and groups in our community with also take steps to call out disrespect and abuse and point victims in the right direction to get help.” Hotel patrons are encouraged to take their coaster home and use it as a reminder of where to get help for themselves and friends. photo: Hotel staff with Speak Up Now’s Val France and Rotary’s Greg Williams and Sherryl Gregory display the new coasters

You know that we have been promoting the show The Idea of North in Maleny. We have been able to bring you this show by working in partnership with the Vocal Jazz Festival in Brisbane. Accordingly the performance in Maleny on 8 August has had to be cancelled. This is a great disappointment for all of us including the large number who have already purchased tickets.
