Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter “”Local Authors release new book” "Teutoburg to Witta" the new book by local authors and historians Dale Lorna Jacobsen and Dr Steve Chaddock, is now published and available for you to purchase. "It has been a long process, pulling together, then teasing apart, the personal stories behind the settlement of the area that was once called Teutoburg” said Dale. Drawing on information sourced for the three highly successful Wittafest events held in 2015, 2016 and 2018, Dale teamed up with Witta archaeologist, museum expert and anthropologist Dr Steve Chaddock to record this fascinating history, the book including lots of illustrations and photographs. European settlers arrived on the Blackall Range in the 1880's to carve out a place to live among thick vine

scrub. The process of selection offered them a chance to establish a place of their own, clearing the land using hand tools, felling trees, sawing them into timbers to establish homes, and fencing small holdings which grew into established dairy farms. The predominantly German pioneers who selected their land in the area now known as Witta in 1887, originally named their new home Teutoburg, in memory of the forest they left behind. For 30 years they built a community centred around dairy farms and their Lutheran faith. All that changed in 1916 when, due to anti-German sentiment, Teutoburg was renamed Witta. The books arrived from the publishers late last week. And it looks terri c! You can purchase a copy from Rosetta Books Maleny, or The Crooked Fringe hairdressers and Sommer’s Fuel Supplies – both at Witta. You can also order your copy online at https://dalelornajacobsen.com/ dales_books__writing/ teutoburg_to_witta. The of cial launch will be held in May, at a date to be announced, at the Witta Recreation Club, a very tting location.

Sallaway's Boarding House can be seen to the right of Porter’s, Maple Street Co-op was situated on that site in 1994. T. he unknown motorcyle riders were probably associated with the Maleny Speedway, which opened on 17 June, 1927. On the 16th July, 1927 a speedway bene t carnival for the Maleny ambulance. Witta Tennis Whistlers played at Mooloolaba, against the Legends. There was a bit of a shower at the beginning, but then we were able to play which was great for us. We had great tennis as expected, and close games which could have gone either way. We bought a very close win home. Score was 37-32 games, 5-3 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Donna Kuskopf. The Witta Wanderers team of Obi Wynn and Matthew Debbins played the Palmwood Aces - Sydney Tomlinson and Tom Parry. R1 - Obi vs Sydney 6 – 3. R2 - Matthew vs Tom 6-0. R3 - Matthew and Obi vs Sydney and Tom 6-3. R4 - Obi vs Tom 6-5. R5 Matthew vs Sydney 6-2. Saving the Dark

Light pollution, or arti cial light at night, is the excessive or poor use of arti cial outdoor light. It disrupts the natural patterns of wildlife, contributes to the increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, disrupts human sleep, and obscures the stars in the night sky.

Did you know that the Maleny district is the last area of coastal South East Queensland that is not severely affected by light pollution? And we’d like to keep it that way! Maleny residents treasure the star-studded beauty of their night sky, and such a spectacle is a major attraction to Sunshine Coast, national and international visitors. The Maleny Observatory, located at at Maleny Golf Club, holds regular public information evenings and is a popular destination. As an of cially designated observatory, it is subject to special consideration with regards to nearby lighting under Australian Standard 4282. Maleny and the surrounding district enjoys diverse wildlife, particularly on the Maleny Community Precinct, with the new wetland created by

UnityWater shaping up as one of the Sunshine Coast's prime waterbird habitats. Much of this habitat is adversely affected by excessive arti cial lighting at night. Light pollution wreaks havoc on ecosystems. Migratory birds, accustomed to navigating by the stars, smack into brightly lit buildings, others endlessly circle street lights until they are exhausted, and owls lose the element of surprise over their prey. The major contributor to light pollution is street lights, particularly those that shine light above the horizontal (unshielded) and have a high blue content in their light. The work being done at the Maleny Observatory by Brisbane Astronomical Society, under the guidance of Dr Ken Wishaw, encourages and supports research as to the impact of these changes on residents, sky quality and wildlife. We will be bringing you more information and news about how we can all help Save the Dark and measures that can be taken to preserve the night skies, one of our oldest environments. The National Light pollution guidelines for wildlife are here: https://www.awe.gov.au/environment/biodiversity/ publications/national-light-pollution-guidelines-wildlife

Photo Below: Shown here is a healthy Sooty Owl, that hopefully will become long-term resident as the habitat rehabilitation in the district continues, including curbing light pollution.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny We need to start this week’s report with our most important event – the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards Ceremony. This was held on Tuesday March 22 (having been postponed due to Covid) and was a signi cant moment for our club as our very own Vince Carbery was nominated for the Senior Citizen of the Year Award! As a Maleny local since 1940, Vince has contributed to the community in so very many ways including as a school teacher, Cricket Club administrator and president, a coach and referee for three different sports, a Meals on Wheels volunteer, and of course in the many roles he has led in our Croquet Club as coach, president, vice-president and groundskeeper. He has also been involved more broadly in the sport of croquet in our region. As you can see this was a welldeserved nomination. Please see below a photo of Vince (second from left) with his certi cate, along with the other nominees. Also this week, our club hosted the Regional Ricochet Championships on Wednesday 23rd and Friday 25th. Division 1 and 2 was won by Mike Bertram and Division 3 and 4 by Diane Horsman. Congratulations to Mike and Diane on these well fought wins. This was a very successful event and we turned on perfect Maleny weather for our visitors! This week, we are looking forward to hosting the Open Regional Association Croquet Championships on Wednesday 30th. The following week on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th, Divisions 3 and 4 of the Regionals will also be played on our lawns. We are looking forward to these great events and anyone can come down and watch how this great game is played. Our Thursday play day saw three very enjoyable games played with some friendly competition. On

lawn 1, Helen Andrews and Sally Adams played very well against Helen Uhlmann, winning easily with 10 hoops to 4. Also on lawn one, Ken Barker was on re, burning Sarah Widin and Vince Carbery 21:5. Well done Ken! On lawn 2, Lynette Evans played Wallace Roy in a very close match, with Lynette just getting ahead to win 9:8. On our Sunday play day, two matches were played. Sarah Widin and Donna Manning had a great victory over Nick Cram and Vince Carbery winning with 20 hoops to 5. Did you know that the club has hosted Queensland wide completions at their Maleny Courts. In 2005, the club, in association with other Sunshine Coast clubs, hosted the Australian championship. The Maleny Show-grounds courts were opened July 26th, 1993 following the club using a court at Ted Singletons private residence.

Court Hire. Our courts may be available for community use or for special events, like workplace teambuilding or social gathering. Our croquet equipment may be available for your guests in some special occasion (e.g. wedding) if suitable grounds are available. If you are interested, please phone, email or use the contact page.
