Maleny Show to celebrate 100 years!

Agricultural Shows such as Maleny’s would not be successful without the tireless work of local volunteers who provide so much of their time to make the show a success for all who visit and compete

From humble beginnings in 1923, the first Maleny Show has been held on the same show-grounds site on MalenyStanley River Rd.

During the Great Depression and unfortunately during some of years of the Depression the show was abandoned – in 1932, 1934 and 1935. A drought which caused great hardship in 1950 caused the show to be cancelled in that

year. In 2020 history was made again with the closure of the 83rd Maleny Show due to the Covid-19 situation.

In 1927 the entertainment committee of the Maleny Show Society held a Pioneers Ball at the Maleny School of Arts in honour of the hardworking pioneers of the district.

Renovations and extensions followed throughout the years, with the Show Pavilion as we know it today was completely rebuilt in 1987 by Ed Lawley & Co in time for the 1987 Annual Show.

In 2023, we are proudly celebrating 100 years of the Maleny Show - see you there!

Photo Left: Maleny Show Pavilion was near enough to completion to be used for the second show on April 23-24, 1924.

Maleny’s Mrs Florence Margaret Woods OAM

On Australia Day 2023, Florence Woods was awarded a prestigious OAM for her lifelong service to the community of Maleny. Her many roles included her time as a volunteer and Life Member of the Maleny Show Society, as the Co-Founder of the Busy Needles Group, as Patron and Life Member of numerous community organisations, as donor to numerous Charitable organisations, including the Maleny Soldier Memorial Hospital, the Maleny Men's Shed, the Maleny Show Society, the Maleny Centaur Cadets, the Maleny Sub-branch of the Returned and Services League of Australia, and as a recipient of the Fisher Community Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award.

Maleny proudly and heartily congratulates Florence and her family on her deserved award.

State of the Art Tennis Facilities at Witta!

Celebrating their major court refurbishment at Witta Tennis Club on Sunday 28 May, in perfect weather, members, sponsors and invited guests were treated to games and a yummy barbecue lunch before gathering court side for a ribbon cutting.

Witta Tennis Club were recently successful in obtaining a grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for court resurfacing, securing $99,000. The club also injected some of their club savings into this huge project. This has resulted in 2 newly painted hard courts and a new synthetic grass court. This improvement along with the installation of LED lighting and new fences places our club as a state of the art facility in SE Queensland.

President of Witta Tennis Michael Hooley acknowledged the ongoing hard work of their committee and club members, and their generous sponsors, some present on Sunday for the ribbon cutting. Mike said that whilst it was often disappointing to get knocked back on grants, that too was part of the process and it had been very gratifying to be successful with this one.

This grant round was part of a special $100k ‘Disaster Recovery Round’, aimed at supporting groups. Information on GCBF grants is available at www.justice.qld.gov.au/grants

Maleny District Sport & Rec Club congratulates the club for their provision of top class facilities for all to use, including the members clubhouse and deck which all add to the great experience for players and their families. out at Witta.

Witta Tennis Club - a long and proud history

To give some perspective on how far the Witta Tennis Club has come since it first began, we thought you’d like to see these photos taken at the official opening of the Witta Tennis courts in 1920!

The Witta Tennis Club has a long history, with the courts originally opened in 1920 by Witta’s Karl Nothling, (photo below) foundation President and a Landsborough Shire Councillor.

should be cleaned up and used again for tennis. The ‘modern' Witta Tennis Club was formed in February 1984 with Peter Barclay as the first President and Ron Tincknell as the Secretary/Treasurer.

With pressures on parking space, Council acquired additional land adjoining the Witta Rec Club, and the new Synpave hard court was completed in 1992 and lighted several years later.

In 1996 two joint projects between the club and Council saw the adjacent Gazebo (that served as the clubhouse until "the shed" was built in2000) and the children's playground adjacent to the new court built.

The tennis circuit consisted of Witta, Maleny, Ellerslie, Balmoral, Conondale, Bald Knob, Peachester, Howell's Knob and Baroon Pocket.

The original site for the Witta Rec Club was donated for use of sport and recreation in those early days and still is held in trust and managed by Council on behalf of the Qld State Govt. Tennis flourished for many decades and early Witta tennis star Ike Lowe reminisced that “The three courts in those days were always full and 40-50 people would be waiting to get a game – if you were unlucky, you wouldn’t get a game all day”.

In the seventies, a clay court was in use (today’s gravel car park area), but fell into disrepair and used by local pony riders as an enclosure for horses.

Witta locals continued playing tennis at privately owned courts at Wootha when in 1982 they decided the courts

The second synthetic grass court was constructed in 2000 and a shade shelter funded and built by the club in 2003. Much hard work has been continued by Witta Tennis Club members, resulting in the state of the art facility the district is so lucky to have today.

Whistlers played at Mooloolaba against the Legends. It was a bit windy; everyone was struggling but we all tried to use the wind to our advantage.

As we expected, it was so close. We had lots of long rallies and long games with lots of deuces. Before we went on for the last 2 sets, we were even on sets and games.

But then we managed to get those last sets. Score was 40-33 games, 5-3 sets. Team was Donna

Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Paula Cudmore and Brenda Warner. Well done team!

Maleny Players Next Production!

We’re excited to be bringing you 'Dancing with Lughnasa' by Brian Friel- and Directed by Andrew Wallace. Dancing at Lughnasa is a 1990 play set in a cottage in County Donegal in 1936. It’s a household of five unmarried sisters who would all like to be married. The youngest has an illegitimate son, the eldest tries to keep preserve family respectability. But now the father of the child re-appears, full of seductive charm, while an elder brother has just returned after decades working as a priest in Africa and is strangely changed.

In the back hills there are still lingering pagan rituals, Lugh (pronounced ‘Loo’) being the ancient Celtic god of the harvest. The rhythms of family life play out against broader social tensions and economic hardship. You will enjoy meeting these fundamentally good-hearted and resilient people.

At Friday evening performances you are invited to come along at 6pm to purchase a bowl of Irish stew to enjoy whilst being entertained with music on the veranda at the Playhouse.

Please purchase your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to seeing you at the Playhouse.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny

The Sunshine Coast Ricochet pennants competition is continuing, with matches played on Thursday 25th May against Headland Buderim. Our team played well, however HB won the day with two games to our one.

On Tuesday 23rd, one doubles match was played at our club on our Ricochet morning. The “Super H’s” of Helen Andrews and Helen Uhlmann didn’t quite live up their name and were resoundingly beaten by Sally Adams and Dianne Horsman 6:17. It was a fun morning.

Thursday 25th saw two singles matches during Association play. Wallace Roy played Sally Adams and had a great win making 21 hoops to Sally’s 4. Meanwhile Lynette Evans was victorious against Nick Cram 14:3.

Sunday afternoon Association play on 28th was a little busier with 6 players in attendance. Sarah Widin took on a team of Wallace Roy and Lynette Evans to win 16:12 while Vince Carbery played against an on fire pairing of Helen Andrews and Stuart Craig, with Helen and Stuart winning 17:8. During this match, an exciting event occurred with Stuart pegging out for the first time.

Congratulations to Stuart on this achievement! He is pictured below attempting a take-off croquet shot during an earlier play day.

Plans are continuing for our 30th birthday celebrations to be held on 30th July. We have a strong legacy in our club, with many people contributing greatly over the years in countless ways. Certainly cause for celebration!

Our croquet equipment may be available for your guests in some special occasion (e.g. wedding) if suitable grounds are available. If you are interested, please phone, email or use the contact page.

Association Croquet

Association Croquet is a tactical game, usually between two players, consisting of running six hoops in order with two balls, clockwise first and then anti-clockwise, and finally hitting the central peg. It is played in a lawn measuring 35yards by 28 yards. The running of a hoop and hitting of the peg scores one point. The maximum score is, therefore, 26 points. Six hoops twice by two balls plus the pegging out.

Play days:

Association Croquet Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30.

Ricochet Croquet Tuesday morings 9 am. Contact Sarah Widin for other days.

Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am
