Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Inc Newsletter “On the Right Track” Muscle on the Mountain, the very popular Maleny event that normally attracts upon to 900 gleaming cars to the Showgrounds, was to have been held this week-end. Like all big crowd events in these times, it had to be cancelled. Motor cars have been coming to Maleny for a long time – did you know the Landsborough – Maleny Road was an important track in the early 1900s? A few hardy souls braved the boggy track up the mountain in those early vehicles! Landsborough Shire Council’s quarry, built at Bald Knob in the 1920s, operated for some time supplying crushed metal for all the local roads. Metal was delivered down towards Landsborough in bins, running downhill on tracks.

The quarry was situated below 'Rowan House' on the present Landsborough-Maleny Road, just below the junction of Upper Mount Mellum Road. The bins were on wheels and workers filled them with rock and pushed them to the crusher. Bins of crushed rock were also pushed down the hill towards Landsborough to be used for road works. Construction started on a new road in 1926 when gravel was used to form the road and as the road improved, more automobiles began to appear in the district, flagging the booming tourism industry as we know it today. Here are a few photos of cars in days gone by.

Pictured in Maple Street on 23 November 1913, is this 1910 Cadillac V8, reputed to be the first car to visit Maleny. The Sallaway family's guest house 'Allawah', can be seen to the far right in the photo (which was demolished and replaced by 3 shops, located at 37 Maple Street.). Charlie Edlundh, son of the Caloundra lighthouse keeper, is the driver. Pictured L-R are the Sallaway boys Reg, Herb, and Fred and next to him could be Mrs Sallaway holding the youngest, at the time Milton. Charlie Edlundh (driver) John (Jack) Sallaway, Andrew McLean (back with hat and dark coat who was a travelling salesman for John Tytherleigh) Effie Sallaway (in pale dress and hat) Isabelle Clarke (of Reesville) Miss Tinker, Samual A. Sallaway (in white) and Mr Sam Harding (Manager of Tytherleigh's Store, Maleny). Dodge owned by F. Dunlop in front of McLean's Cafe and Bakery ca 1925. (l to r): A.M. McLean and Ted Hankinson, with Maleny School of Arts on left.

Buy Australian

Made!

One thing that has become plainly obvious from the onset of the CORVID-19 virus is that Australians are too dependent on goods that are made overseas, especially from China and India. It’s a fundamental idea behind buying locally made products from local shops – we can each help to strengthen our communities and build resilience into our workforce. What have you bought today that was Australian made. Australian made and owned products empowers local outcomes and local small business. Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Inc

Safe Distancing with COVID-19! With the present COVID 19 virus present within Australia physical distancing is necessary because the most likely way of catching the virus is by breathing in micro-droplets from another person sneezing, coughing, or exhaling. By ensuring there is 4 square metres of space per person and maintaining a physical distance of at least 1.5 metres from others where possible, you will reduce the likelihood of exposure to microdroplets of others. Would the method shown below work in Maleny?

The $6.2 million Division 5 Major Capital Works Program would deliver a diverse range of benefits to one of the region’s largest geographical areas, along with $554,000 worth of minor capital works and divisional funding. “The spectacular Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is among our nation’s best subtropical rainforest locations, complemented by its state-of-the-art discovery centre,” Cr Johnston said. “Treasured by locals and visitors, this financial year council will invest $300,000 into a feasibility

study as part of future plans to develop a new 24-hectare ecological park. “We are also spending $100,000 on upgrading the picnic infrastructure at Mary Cairncross, to ensure our visitors have an improved experience.” Streetscaping is also scheduled for the northern entrance of Montville’s famous Main Street in 2020/21. Cr Johnston said streetscaping and placemaking was about so much more than delivering physical infrastructure. “It’s about ensuring a design fit for each individual location and the community that utilises it,” he said. Harold Brooker remembers Early Maleny

In keeping with our motor car theme this week, we reproduce a story as told by Harold Brooker quite some time ago. Harold was part of the Maleny pioneering Brooker family. As told to Les Fawkes. Harold saw many changes take place in the Maleny district before his death in the late 1990’s. His brother Bert passed away in 2002 and unfortunately, both Harrold and Bert took many memories of the development of the district with them.

Chris Brooker (Bert's son and Harold's nephew) and his family still live in Maleny.

When we look down the streets of Maleny today it is hard to imagine wagons ploughing through mud up to the shafts in fact, said Harold Brooker, the mud was so deep that it came up to the tow boards where the carters used to carry their corn beef so that the salt didn’t rust the milk churns. Today when we drive our four wheel drive vehicles on bitumen roads we can only imagine the difficulties that our

parents and grand parents had to sustain. These conditions were not generations ago, but in the living memory of some of our town’s current residents. Harold Brooker remembers the years when it rained continuously for six months, turning the byways into nothing but mud from fence line to fence line. During these times, riding his horse from his family home at Witta to the Maleny State School, which at that time was in Cedar Street, the present site of the Maleny kindergarten, it was impossible to go faster than a trot because of the mud. Coming from a large family of five boys and two sisters, Harold soon learnt what it was like for a family to work together as all the family had their chores to do each day. “Life was always pretty tough, but I have no complaints.” Times certainly have changed. Harold remembers having sixpence to spend one afternoon after school so he bought six pence worth of chocolate. He ate the lot on the way home that day. He got so much that he was sick before he got home, painting the road half the way! About 1914 the Brooker family went first to live at Toogoolawah then to Mudgeeraba, where the family worked on a dairy farm - milking 420 cows a day through race bails, by hand. “You soon got sick of cows,” said Harold. “One day we had just had enough so dad called it quits and we shifted to Pimpama. Ironically, the dairy we had just left then got milking machines."

Harold Brooker remembers Early Maleny Cont from Previous Page

The family eventually returned to Maleny, via Beaudesert and Gympie. Like their father before them, the younger Brooker family saw the transport industry as their destiny, father Brooker having horse and bullock wagons carrying butter and general cargo between Maleny and Landsborough. Brothers Bert and Arthur also went into the transport industry with cream, milk, mail and school runs in the Witta and Curramore area. Harold also joined the transport industry when, in 1950, he found work with Watson & Sons as a taxi driver in Maleny. Harold had sustained serious injuries in 1946 following an industrial accident at the Maleny Co-operative store

when he fell from about 10 meters onto a concrete floor whilst trying to stop water damage to the store during a cyclone. It was believed at the time that he would not walk again, however he did better than walking again, he was able to find work as a taxi driver. There were three taxis in Maleny at that time – people weren’t as mobile in those days and cars were not generally owned by most people. At the start to holiday periods it was nothing to have up to seventeen bus loads of people bring brought into town from the Landsborough Railway Station by Watson’s Transport.

Even then, Maleny depended on the tourist industry for some of its sustenance and most people stayed at the pub or the guest house. His nephew Chris was also is in the transport industry as director/owner of Goldlink Petroleum, B.P. Agents for the Sunshine Coast-South Burnett Area. In one family generation – from horse wagon on mud based roadways to 22 wheeler semi trailers travelling up to 100kph on bitumen roads carrying bulk fuel. With thanks to Les Fawke's Hinterland Grapevine for this story. Photo above: Bullock Wagon in Maple St, Maleny - circa 1914
