Maleny Star Gazers
The nal public star-gazing night for 2021 was held at Maleny Observatory on Saturday November 13 at the Maleny Observatory, located in Porters Lane at the Maleny Golf club. Twenty-two telescopes and over 70 attendees made for a very busy night! Talks were presented around what to ask Santa Claus for Christmas, detailing the pros and cons of all the different sorts of telescopes available. Viewing of the Moon Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune as well as deep sky photography continued through till sunrise due to the good conditions. Taking mobile phone photos of the moon through one of the big scopes was also very popular - see the image here. Public nights will resume at the Maleny Observatory on Saturday March 5th 2022 and our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/ SunshineCoastAstronomyQLD will carry all the details (Brisbane Astronomical Society nights for members will continue each month). Meanwhile, don’t forget to look up in the sky for “Santa Australis” on December 24!

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny There was no play on Thursday 25th. The only evidence of people visiting was a pair of tracks through the damp lawn approaching the gate as rain fell steadily. Sunday 28th was a different story entirely. An extensive cloud cover meant cool and pleasant conditions for an interesting afternoon’s play. Kath Smith and Donna Manning played an exciting singles game in which Kath edged ahead to win 8 – 7. Vince Carbery and Nick Cram teamed up to play a doubles game against Stuart Craig and Ken Barker. Ken and Stuart won 11 – 5.
Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am For details contact, or Contact Sarah Widin President 0417 640 704. On December 15th we will want all able hands-on deck to de-thatch the lawns. This in one of the most labour-intensive operations that we carry out during the year. All help therefore would be greatly appreciated. The roll is an important shot in association croquet. In the attached photo Helen Uhlmann is positioning her blue striker’s ball behind the black croqueted ball so that when she strikes blue with her mallet the black will move to the position she wants it to be in and the blue will end up either in front of a hoop or near another ball to roquet. Note the concentration required to calculate the angles in this process.
