Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter What do you want our district to look like? The Sunshine Coast Council has started the complex process to form a new planning scheme before 2024. In partnership with the community, council will spend the next few years developing a new planning scheme to shape future land use and development across the region.
what you can do with your land and what your neighbour can do with theirs
A planning scheme is a set of planning principles prepared by council to guide what can be built and where. It is about making sure the right development happens in the right locations.
The Sunshine Coast hinterland around the Maleny area is a very special place to live and if we want to ensure that our area remains as the very liveable area that we have enjoyed then it is important that the Sunshine Coast Council gets their new planning scheme right. Already we are starting to see some changes in our area that do not go well with our perception of the future.
Planning schemes apply to land that you own or rent and affects
The planning scheme is, and will continue to be, the key tool to
assist council in responding to growth management challenges. The new planning scheme is intended to be in place by 2024 and the Council has now appointed a Planning Scheme Project Community Reference Group. The members provide a broad representation, from a range of areas of interest, gender, age groups, communities and locations across our region. You need to play your part and make submissions to Council about how you wish to see our area developing in the future.

Bald Knob Hall
On 26th August, 1924 the Bald Knob Hall was of cially opened. It was built where the rst home of Mrs Jane Dunlop was situated; Mrs Dunlop being a caretaker for William Pettigrew, who selected the land in August 1875. One of the rules of the selection process was that the selection had to be occupied at all times, so caretakers were often installed. Jane arrived on the Range in 1875, with four children and is thought to be the rst European woman to live on the Blackall Range, initially on the Pettigrew selection.
A social and dance was held that night with 300 people attending. The music was supplied by local personalities, the Balmoral Orchestra, Miss Cork on the piano, Roy and Norman Cork on violins and Cecil Brandenberg on cornet. (Ref Nambour Chronicle 31st Oct 1924 p 7). The hall was demolished by a cyclone in July 1954. Photo Bald Knob Hall by R. Simpson from the Dave Hankinson Collection
Allan Daniels of Bald Knob built the hall, which was of cially opened by MLS Mr Warren, after he was entertained at a luncheon held by the Ladies Committee. Councillor Will Burgess, who was Chairman of the Building Committee, presided over the ceremony. Stalls at the opening did a brisk trade, with 75 pounds being raised, enabling the hall to be opened fee of debt.

The Grass is Always Longer….. In another of our Recreational Mowers of Maleny series, we recently snapped David Coffey of the Lions Blackall Range Club mowing the Fryers Creek Tree Planting Project area, planted by the Lions in May 2020. A few kilometres out of town on the Landsborough Road, this project was part of the club's efforts to control weed tree species, in particular privet, along Maleny’s main road entering the town. The club was originally a recipient of a Qld Government grant from the Dept of Environment and Heritage for the purpose of weed removal, which the club had conducted over time. The Fryers Creek site underwent several working bees by the club last year, to remove further weeds and clear the area prior to the tree planting. David Coffey said that it was very satisfying to have got some trees in the ground, see them growing well, and also know the public are now able to enjoy the fruits of their labour every time we drive in and out of town. "The species planted are native to the area, and height was taken into consideration when planting under power lines. The site enjoys very good soil, and the trees established very quickly” said David. As does the surrounding grass that needs regular mowing by Lions volunteers until the trees grow on more! The Fryers Creek project was supported by Maleny IGA who contributed $1,200, Spencer and Karen Shaw of Forest Heart Nursery who selected and supplied and placed the trees, and Kel Harding of Maleny Dingo Hire who prepared the holes free of charge. Thank you Maleny Lions and everyone on a job well done.

Thank you Sunshine Coast Council
The Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Inc would like to express their appreciation to the Sunshine Coast Council who have continued to fund the partnership grant by way of their Community Facilities Program. The increased workplace health and safety requirements because of the on going COVID restrictions have made this grant an essential aspect of the MDSRC Clubhouse and Beersheba Living Museum remaining a well maintained community facility. Approval of the grant advice on August 19 was well received. A big shout out to the many volunteers who keep the place looking spectacular! The Museum is located in Parklands Drive (off Porters Lane) Maleny, Queensland It is open to the public on the Last Saturday of each month, from 9.30am (weather permitting).

Travelling Jackaroo Supporting Mental Health
T
here’s no denying that Maleny’s Sam Hughe’s is an unusual young man. As many will remember, the 18 year old set from Maleny’s main street on 21st March of this year, with the aim to spend his gap year driving his 1957 Chamberlain tractor (named ‘Slim’) around Australia to raise funds for charity.
whenever he can. And his idea is working - his blog page has attracted more than 70,000 followers and each town he stop at lls his charity collection tins. The ABC ran a great story recently:
The two charities dear to his big heart are the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Dolly’s Dream. When he departed, Slim had a tinny on top, towing a purpose built trailer that houses his living quarters, supplies and a Suzuki Sierra run about. On top of it is a wingless and gutted Beechcraft Musketeer plane, providing Sam with yet more living space.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-27/travellingjackaroo-raises-thousands-for-rural-mental-health/ 100406492?fbclid=IwAR3cAzze6NHUgaC1_fVS1Eyb7CLZK6F3EQBqzOnczPCpN0Y9Y6HCOO6V8.
Strapped to the container are his motorbike and bicycle. His ‘rig’ carries a portable drive-in movie theatre (so he can set up movies at wherever he is on his tour in exchange for charity donations) and even a jumping castle and fairy oss machine for kids! Along the way, he picked up a rescue pup as companion - Bitza, now his loyal hound. So, just when you might think that his eye-catching arrangement couldn't get any more so, he has now popped a Gyro he came across on top of the tinny! "What’s it all about?” you may ask. The answer is awareness. Sam’s unusual rig, chugging along at 40 km per hour top speed, cops attention wherever he goes. The vehicles and adornments carry logos and posters from the charities he’s raising money for, and the many, many sponsors who are supporting his long journey. He followed the Show circuit right up to Mt Isa, helping the shows bump in and out in exchange for charity donations – and the odd feed. He stops at farms fencing, mustering and lending a hand
fl

Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Inc
At last count, he’s raised $18,250 for Dolly's Dream and at least $43,000 for the RFDS and we expect an update on the totals shortly. Recognising that mental health issues are prevalent in the rural sector, he’s turned his attention to this important need, using humour to draw attention to a serious and insidious problem. "If you can get people to laugh, people start smiling, people start talking, and there’s nothing more Australian than checking on a mate” said Sam. Go Sam, you’re an inspiration and we can’t wait to hear about what you get up to next! Last seen at Camooweal, you can follow Sam’s adventures at: https://www.facebook.com/thetravellingjackaroo and if you'd like to make a donation to here are the links below, we know it'd be much appreciated: Royal Flying Doctor Service: https://rfds-qld.giveeasy.org/the-travellingjackaroo... Maleny Golf Club Pennants Win! Massive congratulations go to our pennants players who brought home the club’s rst ag yesterday - defeating Beerwah Golf Club in the men’s Glasshouse Mountains Zone B Division Final at Bribie Island Golf Club. Captained by Jack Day, our team won 4-3 after anchor Garth Bailo nailed his drive and approach to win his match 1 up by making par on the tricky 369m 18th to halve the hole. The fairway was lined with MGC and Beerwah players and their caddies (who had all nished) plus a small gallery to watch this last important dual play out. This win is of historic signi cance for our small club which has only been operating as an 18-hole course for 18 months and with probably not much more than 120 competition players from whom to eld a team. Well done Jack Day, Garth Bailo, Marcus and Blake Wellington, Doug Evans, Lee Dwyer, Mick (the Super) McCombe, Mike Finley and Club Team Captain, Captain, Jan Johnston. Jack Day with the Pennant Commiserations also to the team from Beerwah who were gracious in defeat with all matches played in great spirit. We will now face off and play Mt Coolum - B Division winner of the Sunshine Coast Zone - for the Inaugural District pennant! The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Sarah Widin 26, in a con uence of numbers, pegged out against Vince Carbery 7 on Thursday 26th. The same could not be said of Ken Barker who managed 12 against Val Carbery 5. Lovely, benign spring weather meant enjoying the day seemed more important than making hoops for all. On lawn 2, Kath Smith and Lynette Evans scored 4 against Wallace Roy 6 while Bev Sockhill and Janelle Wilson made 6 against Sally Adams and Helen Andrews 9.

Maleny High Students sing Jazz! Congratulations to Shelby and Emily, students at the Maleny State High School, who performed vocal solos at the Sunshine Coast Youth Jazz Competition on August 28th at the Caloundra Boat Club. The competition was conducted by the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club who believes that “Youth are the Future of Jazz on the Sunshine Coast.” The Club launched their second bursary to local students in years 8 to 12 to encourage further studies, with an emphasis on jazz with the bursary going towards the purchase of musical instruments. There were excellent performances from eight secondary schools from across the Sunshine Coast. Congratulations to you both. The prize pool totalled $4,000 for both vocal and musical instrument sections and there are also a further two prizes of ve hundred dollars to the winner of each section for the student's school music department.
